It makes my blood boil! They drive their big childcrushers whilst on the phone, they tailgate other smaller cars, they use enormous amounts of petrol, they block up roads, they look threatening...how can people choose to drive something like that? Do they have ha a selfish gene, do they think they are just better than other people so rules don't apply to them, or are they just thick?

(NOTE this is only about town drivers, i appreciate that they are useful in the countryside).

Sometimes, I think Jeremy Clarkson is winning.

a bit...

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 05/03/2008 14:24

Nope - I never assumed that you meant in a 30mph limit at all. Thats an assumpution on your part.

I have never had to excelorate, or even accelerate to 35mph in 1st gear. If you need to do that then you're a bad driver with no ability to think ahead, sorry but its true. I too often have to accelerate hard to join a motorway but can bet that I'll be in 3d gear by 35mph, if not 4th.

"I can get my polo up to 35mph in first gear and i do so i probably use up more fuel doing that!"

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks on Wed 05-Mar-08 13:58:49
You didn't say your car can go up to 30mph in 1st, you said YOU drive your car at 35mph in 1st. I stand by my opinion.

I did say i can get my car up to 35mph NOT drive at 35mph in first gear. You didn't read my post properly. Who in there right mind would drive at 35mph in first gear!

AitchTwoOh · 05/03/2008 14:33

how do you know this, then, crazy lady? you are making me pmsl. get those gears up quick, you polluting harridan. lol.

MrsXX · 05/03/2008 14:35

I can't believe someone though i said i drive my car in first gear at 35mph!
My engine would be knackered by now!

AitchTwoOh · 05/03/2008 14:39

you said it, you loon!

scaryteacher · 05/03/2008 14:40

I'm not saying AitchTwoOH, that they're not worse, (and I haven't called her an idiot either have I for caring about it?); what I am saying is that the hypothetical toddler could have been hit by ANY car and badly injured if it ran out into the road, and presumably the injuries would be less from any car driven at a low speed. If the pedestrian be it a toddler, or adult, appears out of nowhere on the road, and the driver is going at the appropriate and legal speed for that stretch of road, and I drive under the speed limit in built up areas, then I don't see that the driver is at fault. Certainly, you have a better view of the pavements and any potential hazards from a 4x4 than from a low slung car like my Saab for instance.

The point surely is that the DRIVER is a larger part of the issue than the car. I live on a pleasant road in Brussels, apart from the fact that it is used as a very fast rat run by commuters who have no regard for anyone else on the road or the street, be it people waiting to cross the road...I won't let DS aged 12 cross the road on his own as it is so bad...the kids cycling to school etc. The drivers are impatient and won't wait. I slowed down, having done mirror, signal, manoeuvre to turn left into my drive, and was nearly hit by a Belgian in a small car who didn't see why he should have to stop for me to turn left. He tried to come around and undertake me as I was turning. He got the best scary teacher look and stopped in his tracks though! I have also seen cars that leave the ground as they go over the speed humps here as they are going so fast. Until you ameliorate driver behaviour then accidents are going to happen, irrespective of what type of car they drive.

MrsXX · 05/03/2008 14:43

When i said it i meant i can excelorate up to 35mph in first gear THEN immediately change gear. I can do this with my car not saying i always do this with my car.

handlemecarefully · 05/03/2008 14:43

accelerate......

handlemecarefully · 05/03/2008 14:44

sorry - that was rude of me. Just couldn't leave it

AitchTwoOh · 05/03/2008 14:44

no, that's not the point. you know what the point is, that a shit driver in a wee car is less likely to obliterate a pedestrian's head than the same driver in a 4x4, but you seem oddly reluctant to acknowledge it.

this is really making me laugh, you're all so mad and deluded. of course none of you will ever be in an accident because you are all superhuman, and as for your magnificent, caring husbands...

(you know they call them accidents for a reason, don't you? they're not called 'on purposes', they can happen to anyone. even on a nice street. LOL.)

redrobin · 05/03/2008 14:45

yes but the point is...speaks slowly...if you are hit by a small car you will be less badly injured if hit by a large car. bad drivers are bad drivers, but a bad driver in a large car is more dangerous than a bad driver in a small car.

scaryteacher, i see the point your trying to make.

AitchTwoOh · 05/03/2008 14:46

MrsXX · 05/03/2008 14:46

scaryteacher · 05/03/2008 14:47

yes, AitchTwoOh, but it is an LPG (less emissions) muckle great second hand 10 year old, will keep it til it can't be fixed any more car; which lives in the garage and only comes out on special occasions now as DH takes eco friendly shanks pony, tram and metro to work and back. I also made DH take bull bars off the Range Rover when he bought it, as there aren't many bulls in our part of Cornwall or Brussels.

I feel really bad about that Mrsxx - my spelling is shocking and I'd hate to have someone correct me publicly. Sorry. It was an unstoppable compulsion

MrsXX · 05/03/2008 14:49

AitchTwoOh · 05/03/2008 14:50

och, so what? get a smaller car, scaryt. i love how everyone comes on saying 'i'm great in my 4x4' and then suddenly it's all 'oh we never use it'.

AitchTwoOh · 05/03/2008 14:50

mrsxx

MrsXX · 05/03/2008 14:51

handlemecarefully don't worry about it. My spelling is questionable most of the time. Sometimes i just can't be bothered to google the words!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 05/03/2008 15:07

Although I still can't believe the need to go up to 35mph in 1st gear even if you change up straight away. I'd have thought your engine would still be knackered.

I have a screen in my car that tells me how many mpg I'm doing. When I first got the car I was more obsessed with that then the speedo - omg I'm only doing 40mpg, must go up a gear. I'm obsessed with imroving my average mpg
