Man in caravan parked over the road

Would this creep you out?

We live in a holiday type place, fairly close to the beach (not U.K.)
But it’s a suburban area and a cul de sac
On and off for the last few weeks, a caravan has pulled up across the road and just parks there for days on end and then just goes until the next time.
I walked with my Dd and dog before and looked in the front window (driver part) and sort a man sort of dart into the back of the caravan.
I am a fairly anxious person about these sorts of things, I have a 5 year old and a few of Dds friends of a similar age on the street and I just don’t like it
Aibu?

Maybe he's a TV licence detector van. Have you paid your licence op?

BlackJumpsuit · 10/09/2023 21:19

Might he be visiting friends/family that live in or near your street?

Jesus, don't be ridiculous 🙄

OP not sure why others think it's OK, it's not. Someone should move him on.

This.

If he didn't hide away in the caravan, you would be less suspicious. His behaviour is odd. I'd feel exactly the same.

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/09/2023 21:21

The default position in the UK is it is legal to park up and sleep on a public road, as long as you're not causing an obstruction.

Various areas will have local bye-laws preventing it on certain roads but someone passing through won't know that, so may well stop somewhere that prohibits it. If there isn't clear signage however, how are they supposed to know?

If you think its NOT a public road, then knock on and ask them to move - or speak to the police, however this is not an emergency, so don't be surprised if they don't show up before the person has moved on.

Loads of people are doing this now, some permanently, some between jobs that come with accomodation. I have a friend currently down south who is between boats, and so living between tent and car - whilst they may look like a vagrant to you, there may be perfectly good reasons for them to live this way.

I didn’t *Peer in, I was walking past my house next to my car and walked past it and looked in, yes. Like I might look in a car window or a house window when on a walk.
Why would I ask him if he needed anything? It was an expensive motor home 🤷🏻‍♀️In our area they park by the beach (which is illegal) take up all the residents parking spaces to come to the beach and usually leave a load of crap behind. They cba to park in the campsite 5 minutes away
I don’t want someone living opposite me for their holiday/travels by my garden and where we can’t park

Is there not a house opposite you then op?

As to pp, what is a residential street for, if not for living in? So what if he's in a van, not a house?

Any Tom, Dick or Harry could be living next door to you. Just because they tell you they are one thing doesn't make it true. They wont knock on your door when you move in and go hi, I'm your new paedo neighbour, will they?

I think a bit of growing up and live and let live is needed on this thread.

Someone should find out if he's legally allowed to be there first.

Unless he’s doing something illegal you can’t.

I really don’t get the drama around this, it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. I used to live near a university and there was someone who was clearly living in a van which they would move around but stayed in overnight. Good on them, it was a really innovative thing to do.

Chocolatelabradorsarethebest · 10/09/2023 21:24

So because you can’t park right outside your house, you’re going to brand someone a paedophile, just wow, this place is a disgrace sometimes.

Ivebeentogeorgia · 10/09/2023 21:25

I doubt it’s legal for him to park there with it being a private road you all pay for. I also live in a cul de sac and it’s a private road because we all pay for the upkeep and the council isn’t involved. I would be pissed off if a camper van came and parked for days taking up the spaces we pay for. Yanbu op. Council might not help if private road though

Bromptotoo · 10/09/2023 21:25

OP says not UK and adds they're near a beach

Unless/until they've ascertained local laws are being broken and/or the person occupying the 'van is up to no good not sure what they can do.

Not saying I'd be delighted if a caravan/campervan were pitched in my road with person resident in it on/off but there's a large gap between that and my lifestyle being screwed up.

SpareHeirOverThere · 10/09/2023 20:17

What ever happened to trust your instincts? If you feel it's off, report it. It's unusual enough to raise your suspicions, OP.

"Trust your instincts" also known as " prejudice and bigotry are A-OK..."

usedtobeasizeten · 10/09/2023 21:27

Maybe you freaked HIM out looking in his window.

PortalooSunset · 10/09/2023 21:27

So you looked into his window but he is the oddball? Aye, right Hmm

User19543785 · 10/09/2023 21:28

I have just seen it is not UK so unless we know the laws of the country it is, no one knows what they can do

Maddy70 · 10/09/2023 21:28

LubaLuca · 10/09/2023 21:08

I live in an area of the UK that's popular with tourists. We went out for dinner the other night, and I was surprised to see a few camper vans parked up overnight in a council car park when we returned to our car. All obviously parked up for the night, TV on, family settled in.

I was surprised that anyone would want to do that. Why not go to a campsite with facilities? I can't imagine anyone able to run a camper van would struggle to pay the nightly fee. Just seems like a miserable way to visit places.

Costs of campsites are ridiculous now.

User19543785 · 10/09/2023 21:29

Maybe it's Ireland

Skogrammy · 10/09/2023 21:32

Get a life and stop being a peeking Tom.

User19543785 · 10/09/2023 21:33

Yes, we use the caravan and motorhome club sites as we like the facilities and for two of us in a caravan it is between £30 and £50 a night depending on time of year and site

SisterMichaelsHabit · 10/09/2023 21:34

There are websites where people tell each other about places they've parked their campervans/motorhomes/caravans on the side of the road with no bother. I'd imagine he found the place from one of those and is now taking the piss using it so much.

In your situation, I'd be tempted to stick a note on his window telling him to move on TBH, OP, because even if he goes away at the end of tourist season in a month or two, he might return next year.

I'd rather be safe than nice.

A) why would you assume this person is a threat?
B) without knowing the legal situation, you can’t just tell someone to move on.

Frabbits · 10/09/2023 21:38

What harm is he actually doing?

None? Then stop being so paranoid and ignore him.

Or, and I'm aware this is a fucking outlandish suggestion, but you could actually talk to the guy.

Yes completely unaffordable for someone struggling so much they need to live in a van.

garlictwist · 10/09/2023 21:40

We live nowhere near a beach and yet have various people in vans moving around our streets and parking up for a few nights at a time. It's not illegal as far as I know just annoying as it means we often can't park outside our house.
