Man in caravan parked over the road

Would this creep you out?

We live in a holiday type place, fairly close to the beach (not U.K.)
But it’s a suburban area and a cul de sac
On and off for the last few weeks, a caravan has pulled up across the road and just parks there for days on end and then just goes until the next time.
I walked with my Dd and dog before and looked in the front window (driver part) and sort a man sort of dart into the back of the caravan.
I am a fairly anxious person about these sorts of things, I have a 5 year old and a few of Dds friends of a similar age on the street and I just don’t like it
Aibu?

It’s not your parking space, is it? It’s public road so anyone can park there

That's not quite true. Lots of councils have by laws that prevent you parking in public roads or some car parks for the purpose of residence - for example over 24 hours.

We had a camper in our road that people came and lived in for a week whilst they visited family.

Report to the council and if it's against the rules they'll be moved on.

but just the way I saw a male figure move away when I walked past freaked me out

Why on earth was that your reaction? He's moved out of sight because someone was walking past & possibly looking in. What on earth about that freaks you out?

I agree, if someone came up and peered in my bedroom or living room window I would definitely be more freaked out than them

This is just so, so obvious isn't it?

Why on earth do some people make life difficult for themselves?

You can’t in the U.K. and not all roads are public roads, my road is a private road, it’s a cul de sac and the three house owners pay for the upkeep of it.
Op find out if yours is private, and it sounds like it could be, if so tell him to move on.

We don’t know where the op is, other than not UK, so no one can be totally sure of that countries rules if the op doesn’t say where it is.

Thisyearhasflownby · 10/09/2023 20:46

I didn’t *Peer in, I was walking past my house next to my car and walked past it and looked in, yes. Like I might look in a car window or a house window when on a walk.
Why would I ask him if he needed anything? It was an expensive motor home 🤷🏻‍♀️In our area they park by the beach (which is illegal) take up all the residents parking spaces to come to the beach and usually leave a load of crap behind. They cba to park in the campsite 5 minutes away
I don’t want someone living opposite me for their holiday/travels by my garden and where we can’t park

Yeah but you couldn't be bothered to email the council either with a simple enquiry, so it's hard to take you seriously tbh.

It sounds like you just like moaning 🤷‍♀️

IhearyouClemFandango · 10/09/2023 20:57

Loving all these kind hearted people who would be happy to have people camping out on their street.

FarEast · 10/09/2023 20:57

Is parking banned on your street?

No.

Then you are unreasonable.

Most paedophiles are men, but most men are not paedophiles. If that's what you're worried about.

topshotta · 10/09/2023 20:58

Yabu what are u trying to suggest🤣

Helenahandkart · 10/09/2023 20:58

If it is a camper van/ motor home, rather than a caravan, and it’s taxed and insured then he’s entitled to park it in any public road he likes. He’s also entitled under UK law to sleep in it, unless your local council has a specific by-law that says he can’t.
Why should he pay for a campsite? Why are you assuming that everyone who lives in a van is some sort of criminal. You sound very prejudiced.
You might not like sharing your cul-de-sac with him, but he is fully entitled to be there.

Mikimoto · 10/09/2023 21:00

...and where we can't park

But....you don't have a designated parking spot!!

Redebs · 10/09/2023 21:02

OP I do hope your 5 year old isn't allowed out in the street without a responsible adult?

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 10/09/2023 21:02

Doesn’t sound like he’s doing anything wrong, essentially he’s using a motorhome / campervan for what it’s intended for isn’t he? It’s essentially the urban equivalent of wild camping. And unless the law is different wherever you are, it’s all perfectly legal

User19543785 · 10/09/2023 21:04

He may be working in the area and staying for a few days for work, some people sleep in their cars and do this. He is most likely completely harmless and just wants a cheap bed

fatandmiserable23 · 10/09/2023 21:05

Creep me out, no. But it would piss me off. Legal or not legal. UK or not UK. Can anyone really say they would be delighted with someone regularly setting up home in a van outside their house? We've had the odd person do it for one night in peak season (seaside town too) which is mildly irritating but I get they were stuck and moved on the next day. Regularly returning to the same residential cul-de-sac as though it's an official campsite a massively taking the piss. I would absolutely knock on the door and ask why he's on your street.

Wetblanket78 · 10/09/2023 21:06

I've seen a lot of people on social media doing this. They just can't afford the stupidly high rents. Some are doing it to give them a chance to save to buy. If their doing no harm leave them alone. Ask them if you can help with anything like doing some washing for them. I'm sure they would appreciate it.

LubaLuca · 10/09/2023 21:08

I live in an area of the UK that's popular with tourists. We went out for dinner the other night, and I was surprised to see a few camper vans parked up overnight in a council car park when we returned to our car. All obviously parked up for the night, TV on, family settled in.

I was surprised that anyone would want to do that. Why not go to a campsite with facilities? I can't imagine anyone able to run a camper van would struggle to pay the nightly fee. Just seems like a miserable way to visit places.

Stop taking the piss! 😂😂😂

Seriously though, all this is silly unless someone finds out whether he's allowed to be there or not.

Weddingblues23 · 10/09/2023 21:09

I suggest you rally the neighbours, get your pitchforks and burning torches and drive the interloper out! How very dare anyone live differently to you, they must be a paedo! 🙄

saffronsoup · 10/09/2023 21:10

Unless he is illegally parked, he is just a person going about his life like you are.

viques · 10/09/2023 21:10

Do you have a NextDoor local to you? It would make a change from “is this your cat in my garden” and “someone walked straight past my ring door camera at half past eleven at night does anyone recognise them”?

Some of the responses on here are fucking bonkers. "Peered in your bedroom window"...in the middle of the street that you'd chosen to park on/in? You'd "freak out"?

Helenahandkart · 10/09/2023 21:15

Maybe you could spray paint ‘paedo’ on the side of his van, like the disgusting bigots near me did to someone who had the temerity to legally park their van on the road. Maybe throw some eggs at it. Why stop there? BURN HIM OUT!!!

Yes and making up shit about looking in windows and stuff😂as if it's outrageous that the residents should dare look near it.

cruffinsmuffin · 10/09/2023 21:17

I mean this happens near where I am sometimes (people love the local beaches!) but it's a public road and public parking in your case isn't it? If it's not residents only permit parking or parked illegally, it might be annoying but it's not wrong.

I think the assumptions about a male figure and mentioning young children living nearby are totally Pearl clutching and unnecessary!

I wouldn't be thrilled about it being harder to park, but what have they really done wrong?
