Good morning.

Last night my 18mo woke up at about 10 and was hysterically crying, he wouldn't let me touch him or comfort him. I sat with him whilst he cried for about half an hour then moved a mattress downstairs as it's cooler and he continued to cry and lash around for another hour or so downstairs then eventually fell asleep.

During this I checked him for a temperature, sore bum, sore tummy - anything to indicate physical pain but nothing.

This has happened about 4 times now, it's like he's in trance. I try turning the light on and 'waking him up' by gently saying his name to him but it's no good.

Google suggests night terrors, but I don't feel that fits as he isn't waking up terrified in my opinion, just completely unable to regulate his emotions, and unable to engage with me.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their baby/child? And can offer some advice?

Thank you.

They don’t wake up terrified after night terrors, just go back into gentle sleep. My DD has them occasionally and it sounds exactly as you describe.

My solution is to bring her into my bed and hold her as it happens, then she calmly sleeps there for the rest of the night. She’s never aware of it in the morning.

Thank you. He doesn't want to be held though that's the problem.
