Car insurance

Ok so not an AIBU - but didn’t know where to post.

Just about to lease a second car (I’m early 40s so we’ve last a looong time with one car - now impossible due to work). We’ve found a deal on a Tesla Y. We don’t have no claims on a second car so starting insurance from scratch. We live in a safe area, with a garage and have had one claim on our other car in 23 years. My husband has been quoted £1500 for insurance!! We’ve been driving 23 years each. They’re saying premiums have gone up massively and we’re starting afresh with no claims. Realise insurance is very subjective but this seems nuts. Our Volvo is £500 by comparison. Any experiences or advice please? Does this sound ridiculous? Or is this just how it is now?

We were quoted £1,200 renewal for two cars (8 and 3 years NC between us). We have recently insured with someone else for £800. So I would try someone else.

Have you just had one quote or have you done quotes on a comparison website?

Okaaaay · 09/09/2023 16:18

Done a comparison site - cheapest (having tried a few more sites) is £1250 😬

Also, that’s for one car (the Tesla)

My car insurance is due for renewal and it's gone from under £250 to over £400 with no changes, driving for over 20 years and 10 years no claims. Prices are out of control just now.

BrokenBonesStixStones · 09/09/2023 16:21

Could they do you a multi-car discount?

SisterMichaelsHabit · 09/09/2023 16:23

That's fairly reasonable for 0 years no claims on an expensive car tbh.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 09/09/2023 16:25

Is your second car something less exciting? Would you be better using the NCD on the Tesla and starting afresh with your second car?

ughnooo · 09/09/2023 16:26

Ours is up by £20 a month/ £240 for the year. It’s shit

Tryingtokeepgoing · 09/09/2023 16:26

I did read that electric cars in general can be more to insure, and Teslas in particular as they have such poor supply of spare parts so when you have an accident the car is off the road for age and ages, racking up hire car costs for the insurer.

Okaaaay · 09/09/2023 16:27

Car insurance on each car won’t be in sync so not sure about complexity of changing second car (second car also lease Volvo). We might be changing our second car too soon so prefer to keep separate

Mine went from £62 a month to £187 a month with Sainsburys and that is after having 5 years no claims.

I think premiums are sky high at the minute.
