Peeing in public

Just after some advice really.

In the new days of being toilet trained, what did you do if they needed to pee no where near a loo?

Finished school, I checked if they needed a wee. They said no. Teacher confirmed they'd not long been. Great. Literally 5 minutes from school, twin 2 needed a wee. And it was a big one. I then checked twin 1 and he wanted one too. Had to do it up a wall on the residential street.

Getting them back to school, getting someone in reception to let us in etc would have taken 10 minutes. The nearest shop with a loo is probably 15 minutes away. We didn't get home for at least 30 minutes.

What am I meant to do cos obv this isn't ideal but neither is walking home dripping pee as they wet themselves

For context, they've been out of nappies since last Wednesday so just over a week. It's a mile home but taking us 40-80 minutes. We've stopped at the local shop for a wee but we're too far from it today

That's just disgusting. Would you like people peeing all over your wall. You could put them in a pull up if they are not reliably dry. It sounds if they only had a wee 5 minutes before they are not really controlling their bladders. Allowing them to pre all over other's people's property is actively teaching them not to respect things belonging to others. At the very least a drain would be more appropriate.

I have no negative opinion on small children peeing on a council owned wall in an urgent situation. Obviously.

They are reliably dry of I let them pee when they clearly communicate their need to pee. Putting them in pull ups wouldn't work. They'd tell me they needed to pee and try to pull them down. They might be late to train but they've taken to it with conviction. They only pee in their nappies when they're asleep.

A council wall isn't all over people's property.

A drain would mean standing in a potentially fast road with two preschoolers where I'm not paying attention to the traffic because I'm trying to make sure DS doesn't pee on himself. That's the parent I'd judge
The one stood in the road with her kids for 5 minutes.

A mile normally takes about 15mins. I know kids dawdle but if it’s sometimes taking 1hr20 mins you need to seriously consider other options.

I have clarified since that Inc a shop wee visit , they're not trudging for 80 minutes solid. There's also two big roads with traffic lights and a wall that has to be walked along so even in nappies it's double your time as a minimum.

Obviously in the ultra hygienic world of MN a child peeing against a wall would necessitate the area for at least a mile around being cordoned off.
In the real world nobody would give a fuck.
Better a little puddle than a child in pain.

Thank you. The issue isn't one fitting on A backpack, it'sy backpack already containing an O2 cylinder, today a pee kit, sometimes a lunch box, etc. I think the pee bottle tho is a great idea and I've ordered some from Amazon

Or dripping pee as they walk along...

Let them wee outside but find somewhere the wee will be absorbed into the ground and not smell. Weeing on a wall is not OK. You find some grass or soil, ideally a Bush or tree. If you wee on concrete or brick and it doesn't rain it will stink to high heaven for days.

Which isn't helpful if the route home is lined with houses and even the public trees are surrounded by tarmac. Because I agree with a bush wee over a wall wee, but the closest bushes are near home and they wouldn't have lasted. Which would have meant letting them wee themselves and dribble wee all the way home

Peeing in a residential area in this heat is going to stink. Not fair on the locals. I always prepared for situations like this with a portable potty or a Tinkaly (portable bottle potty for kids).

I too will be prepared after it gets delivered tomorrow.

OP, you've had a lot of grief here! When you're wrangling 3yo twins, an older child with additional needs (making an assumption because of the oxygen tank) and all the school paraphernalia, sometimes we've just got to do what seems the right thing at the time. I don't think it necessarily means they'll think it's OK to piss against war memorials when they're 20.

I'm pleased that this thread has helped you find a solution (the pee bottle) - hopefully this will be one less stress for you to deal with.

I'm surprised people didn't spot that and realise the oxygen she has to carry about very likely means one of her dc or even herself have health issues (and possibly a health issue that would mean toilet training was a bit later)

Yes it's not ideal for him to need to piss in public but op is hardly the first parent to have this issue and she has repeatedly clarified he didn't piss against someone garden wall and people are either not bothering to read even just the OPs posts before having a go at her or they have read her updates and continue to stick the boot in when she's clearly not ok with this being a regular thing and is asking for solutions to avoid it in future.

The piss bottle (and that's what it is, trust MN to bring class into what people call an empty bottle saved for peeing in) sounds like a good idea. Hopefully you don't need to do it again but you are very far from being the only parent who has had to choose between having a child piss themselves or piss outside and given the weather, kids have been encouraged to drink a lot more water and need the toilet more often.

Behind a bush or down a drain.

Who did the wall belong to then?

The council.

ToddlerIs2 · 08/09/2023 18:58

Tank you @SeriouslySeriouslySeriously .it's actually older DS who was in fact later to teaching due to his stuff, so the "they've only just trained???" comments are less than appreciated

Rather than a bottle, this might be easier? You'd have to empty it straight away (better/drain) but the mask but may help catch any splashes?

Bit random, but likely to be easier for a 3 year old to aim into!

(Steam inhaler cup on Amazon, btw)

Findyourneutralspace · 08/09/2023 19:10

I don’t think anyone’s going to fine a three year old under the public order act for having a wee behind a bush

Riapia · 08/09/2023 19:18

If a dog does it, fine.
But a child, disgraceful.

MusselTryHarder · 08/09/2023 20:19

No judgement here. Toilet training is hard: I've definitely encountered less than ideal situations where the choice is let them knowingly wet themselves when they clearly communicated a need and I have acknowledged it, or weeing beside a path and getting some judgy looks.

I take the judgy looks every time. I probably wouldn't even buy a piss bottle. They'll be able to hold it for longer soon enough.

Lovemusic82 · 08/09/2023 20:28

Most of the people moaning about ‘how disgusting it is pissing in the wall’ probably let their dogs piss all over the place when they walk them 😬. It’s toddler wee, I’m sure it’s no more harmful than dog piss?

OP obviously had no choice, her dc needed a wee, they have only been toilet trained a short time, she didn’t have time to go back to school and there was no where else. She now has a solution with the pee bottle (potty…..doesn’t matter what you call it).

We have a big trip coming up with school so I reckon it might reassure DH of what to do in an emergency

Jeeze you've come in for a lot of flack, hopefully today is a better day.

I don't really understand the wall upset tbh, when you gotta go your gotta go. One trick I've seen a friend do hold a nappy open for the kid to pee onto. Also means you've a solution for emergency poos too.

JMSA · 09/09/2023 06:29

I'm super relaxed and understanding about young children peeing in public. Sometimes it just has to be done.
But up someone's wall is bloody disgusting.
YABU.

WeWereInParis · 09/09/2023 07:02

I have twins. Ignore everyone who doesn't have twins.

🙄 you don't need to have twins to suggest a travel potty or a buggy (which was a common suggestion, and also your suggestion so clearly not something needing to be ignored).

Yellowlegobrick · 09/09/2023 07:25

Peeing on a wall or where there are pavements leaves a lot of smell.

You need to find a grassy/green area or have them wee into a drain, or carry a potty.

Unfortunately at this age it does get difficult to do longer walks carrying loads of stuff because you need to plan around where there are toilets or have a potty with you.

gladwhiskers · 14/03/2024 21:57

OP you're doing the best you can in the circumstances. I hope it's onwards and upwards with the bottle.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/03/2024 22:02

Could you buy a couple of pee bottles? If that's too much then yeah, a potty. It's a bad habit for them to not hold it in till a toilet but it's such early days. But peeing against residential property isn't on.
