to stop DD going to this house because of the dog?

My DD is 5 and in reception. She is very fond of another little girl who has been to play at our house several times.
When her daddy came to pick her up last time he said 'We'll arrange for you to come to ours soon' to DD.
However I know that they have one of those Staffordshire Bull Terrier type dogs and I'm just not happy to take the chance of DD being around it.
So, do I make an excuse when they ask and not let her go or should I broach the subject with the parents and ask them to keep her away from it?
Or am I just being precious and slightly ignorant?

well the attack took place in the ladies loo actually, a small dog off the lead, we walked past it and it rushed straight to ds, biting and scratching him. Guess we were lucky it was a small dog. We have a recreation ground next to the playground and this is where ds gets knocked over. That and on the beach on holiday.

oh I hate dogs

I may have mentioned this before on here once or twice...

LadyWithTheSpottyCoat · 05/03/2008 10:32

Well you are not alone.

I hate dogs too. ALL dogs.

If I had my way, dogs would be kept on farms and in zoos.

I have no concept whatsoever of how or why anybody should be allowed to domesticate an ANIMAL?!?!?!?!

Wisteria · 05/03/2008 10:51

How bizarre...........

Youcannotbeserious · 05/03/2008 11:02

Hey!

Olive and LWTSC!!!

You aren't coming to mine for playdates any time soon!!!!

Wisteria · 05/03/2008 11:07

I have never even met anyone in 14 years of child rearing who even discussed my dogs and their behaviour around children - is it a new thing?

Why should we want to domesticate an animal....?

Well because dogs are invaluable if you are blind/ disabled etc. My dogs are protective and guard my house as well.
They are good company too I prefer dogs to people most of the time

ahundredtimes · 05/03/2008 11:23

God, I'm scared of birds. I think I'd burst into tears if someone released a parrot into the room. [shudders]

I think it's fine to be afraid of dogs isn't it? They aren't predictable creatures to meet in the park, if you don't know much about dogs and you don't know if your child's waggling fingers are safe or not.

I think it's much better when people ask 'can I stroke him?' I used to make ds1 say that, while ds2 cowered behind me, and dd rushed to embrace strange dog.

I can't imagine my dippy spaniel puppy ravaging anyone though, I think I can predict that won't happen. But I can't predict that he wouldn't snap if tired or that he wouldn't try and grab someone's sandwich from their fingers.

Actually, what are we talking about on this thread? I can't remember!

Wisteria · 05/03/2008 11:25

It's perfectly acceptable to be scared of anything you like but it doesn't mean that you should decide all dogs are dangerous, even if you've met one or two that are.

ahundredtimes · 05/03/2008 11:26

Oh yes, I agree with that.

Is that what we're discussing then?

Wisteria · 05/03/2008 11:27

I haven't a clue

Youcannotbeserious · 05/03/2008 11:29

Ahundredtimes - I'm scared of birds too (actually all things that can fly - butterflies etc)

I totally appreciate that everyone isn't as enamoured with my dog / his slobber / hair / drool / mess as I am....... Absolutely no question..

BUT... I am also happy to concede that all birds are not out to kill / maim / disfigure me. It's my problem, my phobia....

Of course, I'd prefer birds stayed away from me and I'm not planning to visit a butterfly farm any time soon - but I can also see that many people find these creatures wonderful and fascinating and lovely......

I don't assume that the rest of the world has to have exactly the same opinion as me (AKA LWTSC!)

Well OP you have my sympathy but looks like we won't have any choice but to have staffordshire bull terriers in our garden. My dimwit neighbours have just got themselves TWO. To set the scene:

  1. They are strictly not allowed dogs in their one bedroom flat under their lease.
  1. We had huge issues last year with their dogs escaping into our and everyone elses gardens, despite our paying for a very high fence, crapping everywhere and terrifying our toddler and me.
  1. They have a newborn and a 3 year old in said one bedroom flat.
  1. Their last dogs got killed by being run over as they weren't looking after them properly.
  1. They are on benefits so how can they afford such expensive animals?
  1. Any complaint is met with "its my right to have dogs innit".

Sorry just needed to vent. Needless to say they are very very thick.

Wisteria · 05/03/2008 11:33

kerala - report them to the landlord - that is unacceptable behaviour.

Youcannotbeserious · 05/03/2008 11:37

Wisteria is right

The landlord might have something to say about their right to have a dog (or two!)

LadyWithTheSpottyCoat · 05/03/2008 11:40

Aaaaarrrghhh, Kerola! My worst nightmare!

Do they wear really thick gold chains as well? (even the newborn)???

kerala · 05/03/2008 11:40

Oh I know thats the right thing to do Wisteria and we did all that last year with the landlord and eventually the dogs that weren't run over went away. Hooray. And for 6 months we have been dog free, so thought it was all over. Then we get back from a weekend away and there they are again! But two.

Sigh....Anyway we are moving shortly to a detached house with a retired vicar next door. And I dont feel guilty for our buyer as we have been assured by their landlord that these dodgy neighbours are in the process of being rehoused by the council. But in the meantime I am now scared to go into the garden.

kerala · 05/03/2008 11:44

Yes she is essentially Waynetta Slob. They do have gold chains, the dogs do have big horrid collar things which I think fighting dogs have and are required for "protection" apparently. Protection from what - everyone else manages to live unaccosted without protection from great big mean dogs.

Also needless to say they smoke weed and drink special brew. Living nextdoor to them has turned me from a live and let live tolerant person to a raging snob sadly.

2shoes · 05/03/2008 11:46

blame the owners not the dogs.
the owners are responsible for their dogs behaiviour.
staffs are lovely dogs but very strong. We have had 2. we had one when dc's were little and would still have it if it wasn't for dd's sn.
