Are accents snobbish

678somean · 08/09/2023 09:19

I know this is going to get me a lot of backlash. But I love a good debate so thought I'd pose the question....
I hate regional accents. I know they can't be helped but they sound so thick.
There was an article in the Guardian recently where they mentioned that people with regional accents go to speech therapy before moving to London in order to apply for jobs!
I think it's a smart move. But of course not a popular opinion.
I've worked with lots of people in high profile roles and honestly, whether people like it or not, the ones with RP are definitely taken more seriously and respected.
I've noticed all over England that the ones who are highly educated with good jobs rarely have their local accent and most have admitted that it's undesirable to have a regional accent and they are middle/upper class so don't speak with one.
Do others feel the same when applying for high status roles?

I'm a brummie with a heavy accent. Not an accent that gets much love haha.
I'm senior management for a private healthcare provider- a lot of my job involves sales and talking to audiences.
My deputy has a very strong northen Irish accent and the director of HR is from Liverpool. Again heavy accent.

I like a regional accent and think you have a very strange way of looking at things.

I didn't say I was right. Just an observation

People go to classes before moving to London? I don't "hate" any accents, but anyone thinking of doing this - don't! A lovely "regional" accent beats a London accent any day! I don't dislike London accents, but they are at the bottom of my preferred UK accents. I can't imagine why people would try to eliminate theirs to imitate it. 😔

@KarmenPQZ

Love how you’re acknowledging how damaging it can be to be insulted based on your accent. All the while insulting a lot of people based on their accent. But hey it’s only social media.

This post that initiated this thread is grotesque. Snobbish, stupid and self-pitying. And incredibly poorly written.

So poorly written that it's gained over 200 comments.
I didn't say I was perfect. I just asked a question which is what MN is for.

OP posts:

Such nasty comments.
Of course I could have posed the question differently. I wrote it hastily and wasn't thinking about my comprehension..!
Bloody hell!
It's just a conversation thread.

@678somean

About three quarters of the respondents think you are either unintelligent, snobbish or a troll.

By your yardstick standing in a crowded room and loudly making racist comments which generate a lot of attention is success because it brings attention. It’s not.

Generating a lot of upset and fuss while insulting people without bringing any insight to the table is not the same thing as having a good debate. It’s just trolling.

678somean · 08/09/2023 21:35

Racist?!
Say whatever you like but I've not said anything racist.

If you're trying to make a faux-intellectual thread, avoid prepositions at the end of sentences.

What is a preposition??? (asking for a friend etc)

No I didn't say you had. It was an analogy to make a point.

If you were as intelligent as you seem to think you are you'd understand the difference.

Come off it OP you've started a thread insulting well over half of the population of the British Isles saying they sound"thick" because people can identify where they come from based on their accent.

The thread, which was explicitly about people sounding stupid, was so poorly written it was laughable. Had there been any logic or credibility to your argument, you completely demolished it by showing poor levels of critical thinking and literacy.

You've then been skewered by people who rightly think you've made yourself sound like a complete wally. Now you're turning round and saying "waah they're all being nasty."

Glass houses and stones etc. What did you think was going to happen?

Not crying. I knew exactly what was going to happen.
I said so in my original post that I knew full well there'd be a lot of backlash.

So you are just a goady twat then.
Your spelling also leaves a lot to be desired. Missed that lesson did you?

Frozenone · 08/09/2023 22:57

Years ago I temped at a London recruitment agency that headhunted corporate staff. I was asked to type up interview offer letters and post them, and then one day the recruiters suddenly got themselves into a massive flap because the only staff member “with a BBC accent” had left the company and they had no one else to ring candidates to follow up the interview offer letters.

I sat there watching and listening to the three recruiters make endless phone calls for a whole day to find someone with “a BBC accent” who could make phone calls to candidates and invite them in for an interview. As a recent arrival to England I thought WTAF madness have I come into.

I'll take all the criticism but I don't know where my spelling was wrong.

I think I throw what I'm taking about.

There's a starter for ten. There's plenty more where that came from.

That's before we even start on the punctuation or the difficult metaphysical question of whether an accent (which is of course an inanimate and non-sentient concept) can be "snobbish". (I'll help you out; it can't).

I've never corrected spelling errors on MN but for you I'm making an exception.

You sound quite sad and insular if you think having a regional accent makes you less clever than anyone else.

You are the one that is coming across as bigoted ,classist and dare I say it thick.
You may have friends but I'm sure they judge you as much as you are judging everyone else.

Isn't it so easy to make spelling mistakes when you're typing quickly? You've just done it yourself.

@678somean

Of course. But if you’re going to venture to call a whole group of people “thick” based on the way they sound, you had better be damn sure your own diction and literacy is beyond reproach.

My primary objection to your comments is that they are offensive but it also makes you look ridiculous to make arguments like this if you’re not on solid ground yourself.

If you can’t spell or string a coherent sentence together you are in no position to describe people as stupid based on their accent.

Surely this penny has dropped by now?

Thedogscollar · 08/09/2023 23:56

Oh there you go then you're bloody perfect with your RP /London accent. Go to bed now and rest easy that the majority of the UK are thick because they don't sound like you.

You and your like are inward looking and sadly will never experience the joy of listening to and loving the regional dialects of the UK.

Thank God for:
Manchester
Liverpool
Newcastle
Birmingham
Yorkshire
West Country
Essex
Suffolk
London
I love all accents and would never judge a person by their accent. You have to be a sad individual to feel like you do.

Apologies for any regions of the UK I have missed and your bloody great accents.
Not included the Scots, Welsh or Irish in OPs skewed view as she was only including English accents in her prejudiced post.
For what it's worth I'm Scottish living in England.

I’ve just explained to you that you have attributed human judgement to an accent and why that makes no sense. The way you have constructed your opening question is nonsense. It’s poorly punctuated.

My daughter is in year 7 and she can write better than you.

That’s not a crime. We all have our weaknesses.

But this has everything to do with your post. The problem is you have called other people thick because of the way they speak. And the way you write would probably get you a fail at GCSE English. Your writing is very suboptimal for an adult.

You are judging people for your own faults. You’re a huge hypocrite.
