To hate the dishwasher taste

LovingLivingLife · 06/09/2023 22:23

Obviously not the dishwasher itself (which I haven't had the pleasure of tasting yet) but the taste it leaves on certain things?

Biggest offenders seem to be kids cups, any plastic bottles, bottles with straws, tupperware and generally anything not ceramic. They all seem to have a chemical lemony taste.

Can it be undone? Or am I losing my marbles and imagining it as my DH seems to think?

Thanks everyone some great suggestions, I will try the different brands. Perhaps I can fix this one small problem in my life!

Next challenge, how to motivate myself to fold and put away the washing... 🎉

Folding problem solved OP.
I saw something like this years ago but it was the size of a large wardrobe.
Maybe replace the dishwasher with this.

Yanbu. I do wash the plastic bottles in it as it sterilizes them but always rinse them through with water before filling again.

No it doesnt

In that case also steer clear of the bamboo ones, they're definitely affected too! In fact I'm not if there's any kids options that don't pick up the scent?

You're not meant to put bamboo in the dishwasher

Lilithlogic · 07/09/2023 06:47

I'm in the habit of giving everything a quick rinse before I use them out of cupboards. My mum always did the same when I was growing up, she reckoned you could always taste the cleaning product used otherwise.

Nsky62 · 07/09/2023 06:51

Use Ecover rarely, mainly bio d ( health food shops or online), I refuse to use the more toxic stuff!
Never have this issue

ShatParp · 07/09/2023 07:02

I tried loads and settled on smol, no taste and clean well. I don't put any plastics in, though.

Dontstoptherain · 07/09/2023 07:11

Throw the man away, not the dishwasher. Why can’t he follow simple instruction from a reasonable request?

MidnightOnceMore · 07/09/2023 07:20

I hate the smell and feel of things washed in dishwashers. Prefer to handwash.

I bought a lovely new dishwasher in my last house and barely used it.

I also hate the smell when a dishwasher is opened.

bellac11 · 07/09/2023 07:23

I hate the dishwasher, I hate the smell the taste and that it doesnt even clean things that well no matter what we do with cleaning it and rinse aid etc, its a bosch so not some crappy brand either. We dont use lemon flavoured either and I can still detect it on plates and pans etc

OH refuses to wash up things by hand and if I wash things by hand he puts them in the dishwasher after, everything gets ruined, cracked, stained, scratched, go dull etc

Horrible things, wish they'd never been invented

AnotherCountryMummy · 07/09/2023 07:31

I've found Ecover and Sainsburys Greencare tablets don't do this. Fairy is the worst offender. It's gross.

Dontstoptherain · 07/09/2023 07:33

@bellac11 I hate all those things too. But I also hate wasting time washing up so just gotta suck it up 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2023 07:51

Ceramic things and anything with straws should not go in the dishwasher,! The former gets ruined and the latter doesn't wash and rinser effectively

What on earth do you put in a dishwasher if not ceramics? ConfusedSure, not ones with special glazes but normal crockery marked as dishwasher safe is fine so long as you use a decent brand of tablet.

DilemmaDelilah · 07/09/2023 07:57

I completely agree with you! I deal with it by NEVER getting lemon scented dishwasher tablets/rinse aid/cleaner and by not putting any plastic things in the dishwasher ever.

My husband thinks I am over sensitive to smells/tastes. I think he has something wrong with him that he can't smell/taste the dishwasher nastiness! I very much look forward to telling him about this thread.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/09/2023 08:59

I agree with your DH @DilemmaDelilah.

We use normal 3 in 1 tablets (Aldi/Lidl) or Finish if they're on a good offer and I've never noticed any 'dishwasher taste'.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/09/2023 09:03

Oh, is the 'dishwasher taste' like scented sanitary towels when Mumsnetters can tell if a woman at the opposite end of a large supermarket is wearing one?

JanesBlond · 07/09/2023 09:08

This is not something I can say I’ve ever experienced. We use ecozone dishwasher tablets and usually ecover or bio d rinse aid, none of which are scented I think.
