Or was I impatient?

The bus turned up almost 30 minutes late tonight. Buses are usually every 30 minutes. I was hot and had a really troublesome day at work as well as being ill.

The second stop into the journey a woman got on. Her card was declined twice and the driver asked if she had any others. She didn't seem to and decided to phone her husband (maybe to transfer her some money onto the card?)

The bus driver wouldn't move until she paid and she was messing around for 5 minutes. I eventually lent over to her and asked if she could please get the next bus as the bus was already late. She refused saying that she had waited for that bus and eventually a kind man came and paid her fare.

It got me wondering if I was inpatient or was I justified in asking her to get off? I just saw an entitled madam who didn't give a shit at holding up other people.

You could have offered to pay if you were that bothered.

Everyone is hot and bothered at the moment so I'll assume that's why you were so grumpy.

Certainlyreally · 06/09/2023 19:53

So she had also waited a long time for the bus, the bus driver could have let her pay during the journey like the old days

Throwncrumbs · 06/09/2023 19:57

I was on a bus yesterday and a local man got on (lives rough for context) he asked the bus driver how far he could go for 80p, bus driver just let him on and never took the money( it’s £2 wherever you go unless you pay by card or app then you get a reduction).. he was really appreciative, and I thought it was a kind thing to do. He’s prob well know, just like the man who gets on and never pays and hasn’t done for the 40 odd years he’s been doing it (DOP patient).

SpeedbirdSquawker · 06/09/2023 19:58

Her card obviously wasn't going through though so the other option was for her to get cash out. She seemed to think a miracle was about to happen and she was doing nothing to speed the situation up.

She'd also waited 30 mins longer in the sun for the same bus - things happen, cards don't work, people don;t have cash - thank goodness for the kind man who saved you both more hassle and paid for her - yes your where impatient and a bit rude

Lilolilibet · 06/09/2023 20:01

Maybe she was also feeling unwell, hot and desperately needed to get home? Maybe she had a hidden disability and no plan b. You showed zero compassion.

Buses are notorious for their card machines not working. It wasn't necessarily anything wrong with her card.

thistimelastweek · 06/09/2023 20:05

OP I sort of get your impatience but you weren't kind.

It did. Someone paid for her

Isseywith3witchycats · 06/09/2023 20:08

personally after knowing a bus had missed and seeing her having difficulty in paying by card i would have just paid her fare for her

SpeedbirdSquawker · 06/09/2023 20:08

I feel really bad now that I was so shitty. I just felt that if it was me I'd spare the other passengers of their time and go and sort some cash rather than stand around and do nothing. I know the woman sat opposite me didn't seem best impressed with my actions. I massively lack empathy.

I absolutely hate the bus. Possibly preferably than driving behind a cyclist.... Both make you behind your schedule...

Sirzy · 06/09/2023 20:09

Good on the man who actually showed some humanity and helped her rather than adding to her stress

SpeedbirdSquawker · 06/09/2023 20:10

I don't have a bus fare for her to spare at the moment.

Whattheactualwhatnow · 06/09/2023 20:12

I think asking her to wait another 30 mins (therefore an hour in total) to make her journey, because it took her a few minutes to sort her card payment was impatient and unreasonable OP.

VerticalSausages · 06/09/2023 20:13

Well at least you are reflective so probably don’t totally lack empathy! I think a lot of people would pay the fare for a stranger in this circumstance, whilst giving enough time for hopefully someone else to volunteer first…

TawnyLarue · 06/09/2023 20:13

I get it. It’s the faffing. I can’t bear the faffing and not caring about holding anyone else up.

I got stuck behind a woman in the post office the other day who was fannying around like I’ve never seen before. It got to the point that the woman behind the counter was trying to hurry up. “I’m retired I’m not in a hurry” was the response. I was calm but the woman behind me was going off her head

M4J4 · 06/09/2023 20:14

YANBU, she sounds annoying.

If she’s on the bones of her arse and can’t afford the bus fare them I sympathise, but she should just say that so bus driver can decide on payment or someone can offer to pay.

SpeedbirdSquawker · 06/09/2023 20:15

It was the faffing that got to me and the fact that she didn't care about holding others up. As that bus was so late, she would have had a few minutes to wait for the next one. I don't think she cared about holding the bus up.

How do you know?

Lovebeingamummy2 · 06/09/2023 20:17

I get the bus all time and constantly see people getting on with cards declining it's not the persons card 99% off the time it's the bus machines I always make sure I have cash if I'm using the bus now and have multiple times paid someones fair when a card declines especially when I know them and they often transfer me the money back it's the bus companies fault and they need to sort it out!!!

grayhairdontcare · 06/09/2023 20:19

Your needs don't trump hers.
Public transport is notoriously shite!
She needed fare to make the bus move and was trying to arrange it.
If you didn't have anything helpful to offer then you should of stayed in your seat!

Sorry, modus operandi. Her way of doing things (to get a free fare).
