Do I need to wash my face?

Over summer, I’ve worn zero makeup. At night I moisturise and in the morning use an spf. I rinse my face in the morning & at night, but haven’t been using heavy cleansers or even soap and my skin looks better, is this gross though?

I dont wear make up and I just use water most of the time. Once or twice a week I use a gentle scrub. I've never had any problems with my skin, it looks good.

BlackberryCrumbs · 06/09/2023 06:56

You wouldn't just rinse your body in the shower with water would you?

Er, yes.

I use a gentle unscented body wash every so often in the shower when I exfoliate from top to bottom. Maybe once every two or three weeks.

Every other shower I have, I wash with water alone. Works fine for me.

Thereshegoesagain · 06/09/2023 07:03

I just wash with water and I think my skin is better for it too.

erikbloodaxe · 06/09/2023 07:13

I only use water to clean my face..... it's the best its ever been. I dont use SPF on my fave though ( makes it sore).

ChristmasFluff · 06/09/2023 07:21

I only rarely wear make-up but I do use moisturiser and suncream in summer.

I use a facial wash each morning (and flannel to exfoliate) and nothing in the evenings.

My skin is so good that I am frequently mistaken for a massive newborn baby.

That last sentence may be a slight exagerration, but I do believe you need more than water to cleanse your face, and also agree with a pp that it's more likely whatever you were using previously didn't agree with you.

I sea swim, and the salt is really drying too, I'd want that fully cleansed off and that is the only time I do a second face wash.

GreyCarpet · 06/09/2023 07:27

I use the oil cleansing method with coconut oil in the evenings and rinse with water in the mornings. Once a week, I make a turmeric, raw honey and yoghurt face mask.

I use a mild moisturiser and that's it. My skin has never looked better. I've been doing it for around 10 years.

GreyCarpet · 06/09/2023 07:28

Forgot to add, I wouldn't want to just rinse with water - I think you need something to remove the sweat/grime/dust from the day. Your face naturally produces oil which means the water is just running off that.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 06/09/2023 07:33

If it feels clean enough and your skin looks good, what's the problem?

pickledandpuzzled · 06/09/2023 07:40

The cosmetics industry does really well training us to apply products, then strip the skin removing them with more product, so we need to that yet another product.

If you feel and look ok without, then keep it up.

TheWayofBeing · 06/09/2023 08:55

Try an Erase Your Face flannel? They're great at getting makeup and oil off with just water.

I usually use just water and that. Or an oil balm when wearing makeup.

NewbieSM · 06/09/2023 08:59

@BlackberryCrumbs really? You don't wash feet, armpits or anus with any soap regularly? Grim.

BubblesWoo · 06/09/2023 09:03

I just use water on a morning and do a double cleanse on a night if I’ve been wearing SPF or makeup (only wear makeup maybe twice a week). Tbf though, I do have oily clog prone skin. I use an oil based cleanser first for at least a minute, then a water based one to make sure all the product is off.

EatYourVegetables · 06/09/2023 09:03

I only ever use water and moisturiser and my skin looks great at 42.

Oil make up remover for eye make up and lipstick, when I wear them. No face powder, tinted moisturiser etc - my skin looks better than that fake stuff.

EXACTLY.

Summer2424 · 06/09/2023 09:06

Hi @Whatsatobyjug
Not gross at all, i only use water to wash my face and only use spf in the day too x

SalviaDivinorum · 06/09/2023 09:06

I only use eye makeup and lipstick and that rarely. I use the cheapest possible cleanser to get it off.

Otherwise it’s just water on my face. My skin is far happier that way. Its never dry, never breaks out and looks good for my age. I’ve found the more products I use the more I seem to “need” and my skin can take care of itself better without anything

This.
I just wash my face in the shower with whatever I'm using in there.
I use a moisturiser, often nivea but if something else is on offer I'll try that.
I'm in my 50s skin is perfectly fine.
But i don't wear a lot of make up

Mamai90 · 06/09/2023 09:09

I have problem skin and it looks amazing when I don't wash it, I wear makeup every day though so I have to wash it. If your skin looks good I wouldn't bother with anything other than water.

After discovering my skin looked better without being washed I read a little about it, I remember reading Salma Hayek never washes her face either so you're in good company OP 😆

bryceQ · 06/09/2023 09:09

Skincare and all self care is so personal. For some people this would give them a breakout. For others it would be drying. For others perfectly fine. There's no correct way to look after your skin.

I like a 2-4 step routine as I enjoy it and it makes my skin glow but I never suggest it's mandatory!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 06/09/2023 09:59

Does it really matter if it's not causing any issues?

I do, because I live in a high pollution area and also I have unguents I need to apply for my rosacea.

NewbieSM · 06/09/2023 08:59

@BlackberryCrumbs really? You don't wash feet, armpits or anus with any soap regularly? Grim.

Feet, armpits and anus need soap because they excrete additional sweat and other unsavoury smells and liquids... the face doesn't.

Somanycats · 07/09/2023 12:44

All the people worried about chemicals in SPF do you know you are washing them off with a load more chemicals right? Water (rain) may be natural but what comes out of our taps certainly isn't. Unnatural and chemicals are not fearful concepts.

peanutcrumble · 07/09/2023 12:59

I'm 39 and have never really had a skin Routine I think it's all a load of rubbish tbf. The beauty industry is worth billions because they make people believe they need it all to have good skin.

I splash water on my face everyday. Use a kiko moisturiser with spf in. Splash again at night job done. I don't wear makeup everyday I don't need it my skin is glowing. I have my brows threaded and tinier every 4-6 weeks. I think if you have good brows you don't need makeup. I wore makeup Sunday for the first time in 4 weeks. I use a face wipe to remove makeup.

This was because she said she only used water in the shower

Oldermum84 · 07/09/2023 13:49

Just water is fine. People saying you need to use this and that have been brainwashed by the cosmetic industry.
