To take this ECG off

Couple of unexplained collapsing episodes a few months ago (100% down to stress, lack of sleep and not eating enough I'm sure) anyway doctor requested I wear an ecg monitor for 5 days.

So had it put on yesterday, 28 degrees here, wires everywhere bit of a pain but manageable but now DS keeps ripping it off (non verbal autistic) and the itching is unbareable! I took one pad off earlier to replace it because I needed some relief just for a few minutes and the skin underneath is peeling, sore, red.

Contacted GP surgery and receptionist said she would get back to me but hasn't rang yet.

Seriously contemplating taking it off and leaving it in the car (as soon as unconnected starts to beep) as we discovered 917345 times in the night when they kept popping off.

Bit of a pointless post but do I just pull it off? I'm not due to take it off until Friday and it's ruining the last bit of good weather we will probably have this year!

Well, if you do, they will be no nearer finding out a reason for your symptoms, (not to mention the waste of NHS money - in the private sector that investigation costs over £200). Up to you though.

Sounds like you have an allergy to the adhesive, yes take it off and start again if they can find you pads to suit

If your doctor requested a 5 day ECG then I’d assume it ought to be kept on. These are neither quick or easy to get.

I had several which culminated in open heart surgery. That irritates a fair bit more than the minor discomfort from a few wires.

I had my last round during a heatwave and wore it at the beach without issues in a bikini.

ThreeLittleDots · 05/09/2023 12:21

By the way, I had this too and the pads aren't meant to be itchy or irritative at all - this isn't usual, but could be caused by sweat I suppose.

Ooh sounds like you're having a reaction.

I've had a long ECG and didn't react like that, although I'm a bit allergic to other things and is presents just like that.

Just take it off

i agree it sounds you are allergic to the adhesive on the pads. While it would be good to get the test done, I don’t think 5 days of this reaction is sensible at all. I have an allergy to certain dressings and the itching and pain is unbearable .

No take it off. I react to things like that and it’s worse in hot weather. In the heat I have reactions to some things I am fine with most of the time, labels, bra straps, elastic. People telling you to keep it on must have no idea. Also if the skin gets really sore you could end up with an infection.
