Hi, so appreciate this is a bit premature as we are TTC but wanted opinion on a baby name!

My favourite name for years has been George but my brother and Sis in law called their son that - which is absolutely fine FYI, I love my nephew.

My husband loves the name Georgia for a girl and I do too but concerned it may be unreasonable seeing as we have a George in the family.

AIBU?

Thanks

Georgina, and Gina for short?

Ponoka7 · 05/09/2023 09:44

It's fine. Where I was from, family names are the norm so you could have siblings called different versions of the same name. Are you a family were cousins stay life long friends? People are adults longer than they are children, plan for the adult you are creating.

I don't think there's anything wrong with George and Georgia at all, might be a bit twee for siblings but fine for cousins.

But I do come from a huge family and share a name with three of my cousins so it's more normal for me lol.

Using either George or georgia is fine. I will use a fake name here but I know a family where the dad is called david, the son is David, the grandson is David. The dad had a brother whose middle name is David but goes by David, the son has a cousin called David and one called Davie, the grandson has a cousin called David. Lots of families have 'family names' and people don't mind and find a way around telling people which David they mean!

Georgina is one of those 'we wanted a boy' names

It's quite common for cousins to have the same name (or male/female versions) as often children are named after grandparents.
But are the cousins going to be growing up together very much in each other lives? Or just seeing each other twice a year at Christmas and Easter?
If they are growing up close and together - tbh I'd maybe pick another name.

WhateverMate · 05/09/2023 09:54

My son has the same first name as his male cousin, at no time have they ever been confused or mixed up and they're both adults now.

CatAnnoyance · 05/09/2023 09:58

It's your baby, a brand new person who will have that name for the rest of their lives. Doesn't matter if it's the same as someone in the family, who cares? If you like a name, use it. We have several Hannahs, Patricks, and Georges in our family. No one bats an eye.

They’re two different names and you could easily use the nickname “Gia” for Georgia.

Thanks all 😄
