I’ve never been and recommended it to my partner as a weekend break. He’s said no because of what’s happening in Ukraine.

Aibu to think he’s being ridiculous? He said travel insurance will be ridiculous.

Very sensible. My cousin wanted to take a course on Norwich. Madness! Imagine going east at this time.

I said to her, it's just a bit of sea between there and Siberia. You want to be careful anywhere past Lincoln imho.

LOL

suburbophobe · 04/09/2023 20:14

to be honest they are pro Russia and do not support Ukraine in the slightest (horrible but unfortunately true)^

That's them off my holiday list then.

WhatInFreshHell · 04/09/2023 20:16

@JennyForeigner Absolutely killed me 😂😂😂

Along with most of central and Eastern Europe then? Sad but true that a lot of Europe sees Russia in a positive light after everything they have done.

the people are lovely and the city is beautiful

DeeCee77 · 04/09/2023 20:17

Budapest has just hosted the world athletic championships. There's no way it would have been allowed to do so if there was any safety issue there in relation to what is happening in Ukraine.

He's being ridiculous as its a non issue (or he's just not interested in going and is making up any non existent reason not to).

Sorry what

GolgafrinchamB · 04/09/2023 20:20

He's crazy, there's a tiny bit of border and it's so far away from Budapest!

Crikeyalmighty · 04/09/2023 20:23

My h won't go to Turkey or Hungary because he doesn't like the politics!! ( we have been Istanbul but back in 2013)

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 04/09/2023 20:26

😂 your oh is being a Wally. My family live in Hungary it’s very safe, Budapest is close to Slovakia. SMH 🤦🏽‍♀️

Lovemycat2023 · 04/09/2023 20:26

We went to Finland last year. Lots of soldiers around including at the hotel. I didn’t feel worried and the insurance was fine. His attitude is just strange.

AnnaMagnani · 04/09/2023 20:28

I didn't like Budapest because the politics of Viktor Orban were so obviously on display everywhere - that was a few years ago and presumably it's got worse since.

So not wanting to go because it's run by an ultra-right wing anti-semitic, homophobic pawn of Moscow would be fine.

But because it borders Ukraine? Bonkers. Russia never invading it, they are best buddies.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 04/09/2023 20:28

My daughter's going on Wednesday.
Travel Insurance was about a tenner.

cheddercherry · 05/09/2023 12:06

I’ve just taken my four year old on a solo trip last month, it was beautiful. I was actually surprised how much we both loved the city, there was so much to do and see. I felt really safe even into the evenings walking around etc.

Absolutely missing out!

saraclara · 05/09/2023 12:14

Are you sure he's not dumb? Because this is absolutely nuts.

Of course travel insurance won't be imapacted by a tiny bit of border with Ukraine. Of course Budapest is safe. I don't know what he's thinking, but he needs bringing down from this weird panic about nothing.

CecilyP · 05/09/2023 12:26

My travel insurance it me in a more expensive band in order to include Spain! No mention of Hungary at all! DS and partner went in June and loved it!

knobkopf · 05/09/2023 13:01

Budapest is a lovely city. I go there often.
Travel insurance does not cost more.
Hungary does share a border with Ukraine but there are no problems regarding the conflict in Ukraine which affect travel to Hungary from other countries.

If you've explained to partner that it's safe and that the travel insurance doesn't cost more and he still doesn't want to go then you can't force him to go. So go on your own or with friends if you want to see the city. Or go somewhere else with him.

Is there another reason he doesn't want to go which he hasn't told you yet? Some people refuse to go to Hungary because of objections to their right-wing, homophobic government.
I also know same-sex couples who won't go because of concerns about homophobia when out and about in the city.

flotsomandjetsome · 05/09/2023 13:09

DS & GF (both just 19) have just been travelling around Europe and Budapest was their absolute favourite place. Beautiful place, loads to do (world athletics was amazing apparently)

I was not in the slightest bit concerned about them going.

VeridicalVagabond · 05/09/2023 13:15

He's being a prat. Budapest is miles from the border anyway and really not impacted, from a tourist's perspective.

We go every year, sometimes multiple times a year as it's so cheap and gorgeous. We've not long got back actually (went in July). Travel insurance was fine, everything was as lovely as it always is. It's such a fantastic city. We're thinking of going again in October for husband's birthday. I'll report back and let you know if we get drafted into the war 🙃

@Flyonthewall01 I’m not sure you can extrapolate what the Hungarian government is doing / saying to what most Hungarians believe although there has been a rise in pro-Russian sentiment in Hungary recently.

Not sure how you define ‘most of Central and Eastern Europe though but Poland, Romania, the Baltics are all fiercely anti-Russian.

@nikkiang I’m Romanian, from close enough to the border to Ukraine and I wouldn’t worry at all about traveling in the region - and definitely nothing to worry about with regards to Budapest. There’s no chance anyone wants a NATO country involved in this conflict at all.

jannier · 05/09/2023 13:49

If print off government advice for travel to Budapest.....won't show a problem. And quotes for travel insurance as well as a map if he still says no find a friend....I'll be free....

Like I said, I work in Hungary, about 40min drive from Budapest and stay in central Budapest when I’m over there. So it’s not a case of extrapolating the behaviour of the government it’s actually what the people living there say. Maybe all the Hungarians I work with just happen to be anti Ukraine but I’m just expressing my experience and how the OPs partner is unnecessarily worrying as the fighting will not spill over the border as Hungary is not opposing Russia.

Berlinlover · 05/09/2023 20:27

I couldn’t be in a relationship with anyone that stupid.
