Grandmother name

My mum wants her “grandmother name” to be GRANDMUM.

I really don’t like it - I feel like she’s deliberately wanting to use the word “mum” in it to try to take over from me being the mum - there should only be one mum and that’s me imo! (Yes that is the kind of childish thing she’d do).

Its also clunky to pronounce and I don’t know why she can’t just use Granny or Grandma or whatever.

If I say anything to her she’ll probably have a meltdown, but AIBU to not use it myself to the kids and just say “Grandma”?

Tell her if she goes with grandmum she’ll only be getting generic cards from now on since they don’t make ones with grandmum on. Might help change her mind if it appeals to her vanity to want stuff like that and worlds best grandma mugs!

To me it doesn't sound like a big deal wether grandma or grandmum. But sounds like there is a lot of history and this is just another take over from your mother so not being unreasonable if you believe her intentions are not pure.

I’m not ready to be a grandmother, so I would stick to my first name until I do 😁

It sounds like you both as petty as each other.

It’s not something I could get worked up about. You are and very clearly will be the one and only mum and most important person to your child, regardless of whatever other people want to be called.

Children choose not parents or anyone else. My grandparents were either called grandma and granddad Archie. (Not their surname. It was after the cat) or the silly billy chatterboxes, on my mum's side. On my dad's it was grandma and grandad Athel after my granddad's first name so my grandma got called her husbands name till she passed even though he died when I was 2 and she lived another 16 years. Even when I wrote letter I addressed them that way my auntie had to explain this to my grandmas carers when they got confusing post lol xxx
