To refuse to buy this toy for DD?

DD wants to buy the jellycat kangaroo toy as we are going on holiday in October to Australia. I’m not sure about buying it for her because some (not all) Australians see kangaroos as pests and I don’t want people to mean to her as a result for having a kangaroo. Just in terms of if anyone horrible was to say something like “why has she got a soft toy of a pest” or something more horrible. DD definitely wants to take it with her when we go so I wouldn’t be able to avoid it coming to Australia with us either. Aibu to not buy it her for this reason or am I worrying for nothing?

Plenty of toy kangaroos for sale in Australian tourist shops, so I would buy one for her there instead!

TenOhSeven · 02/09/2023 18:30

You are massively overthinking it. Every single tourist shop you go into in Australia will have kangaroo toys.

missmollygreen · 02/09/2023 18:30

You are 100% worrying for nothing

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/09/2023 18:31

I can’t pretend to have any expert knowledge in this area, but I find it hard to believe that people would deliberately say nasty things to a child about their cuddly toy.

Sirzy · 02/09/2023 18:31

Massively overthinking!

Massively massively overthinking. Mountain out of a molehill 😂

This. We went last year. Soft kangaroos everywhere.

Singleandproud · 02/09/2023 18:32

You are massively over thinking it. The purpose of birthday and Christmas money is for children to buy the toys / tat that their parents don't want so if she has some then she can buy her own.

PhantomUnicorn · 02/09/2023 18:33

Huge overthinking.

When my brother went to Australia, he bought me back a Roo in a tin.. it was a "Can-garoo" apparently. lol.

Inthenightskyallday · 02/09/2023 18:33

I’ll have a think about it and decide. I have a few days yet as it says it is not back in stock until next week.

she also wants the bashful koala but I don’t think it looks much like a koala to be honest and it also looks a little ugly to be honest

There will be a much bigger and better selection of cuddly kangaroos when you get there

GreyTS · 02/09/2023 18:34

I had no idea so much thought and angst could go into the purchase of a teddy 😳

its not her birthday or Christmas money. I would be buying it for her

Of course it isn't an issue. They put kangaroos on everything including their coat of arms. Confused

This! Jellycat also do spiders and lots of other items. Rabbits are considered a pest to some and I bet jellycat bunnies are their bestselling line!

angelikacpickles · 02/09/2023 18:39

Surely you cannot actually be serious?

CurlewKate · 02/09/2023 18:42

My ds had a soft toy rat. Nobody ever said a word! Buy the kangaroo....

Thewizardbinbag · 02/09/2023 18:43

How old are you? This is utterly stupid.

BackT · 02/09/2023 18:46

Absolutely get it! We weren't to Aus when DD was younger and the first thing she did was buy a stuffed kangaroo.

Would u think it was weird if an Aussie kid had a toy fox? Or a toy squirrel?!?

notforonesecond · 02/09/2023 18:47

I’m sorry. You…actually think an Australian person might be mean to a child about a cuddly toy?

That’s a genuine concern you have?

Give over, OP.

YouHoooo · 02/09/2023 18:47

This has given me the laugh I needed today. Thank OP!

user1471447924 · 02/09/2023 18:48

What the hell have I just read!?

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 02/09/2023 18:52

Just googled. It is adorable. Defo get one and take it.

Sunshineclouds11 · 02/09/2023 18:52

This can't be real 😂

Letitgonowgr · 02/09/2023 18:54

How random, I’d never even think about it that way! If my son wanted a rat toy I wouldn’t deter him because they’re pests!!
