To refuse to buy this toy for DD?

DD wants to buy the jellycat kangaroo toy as we are going on holiday in October to Australia. I’m not sure about buying it for her because some (not all) Australians see kangaroos as pests and I don’t want people to mean to her as a result for having a kangaroo. Just in terms of if anyone horrible was to say something like “why has she got a soft toy of a pest” or something more horrible. DD definitely wants to take it with her when we go so I wouldn’t be able to avoid it coming to Australia with us either. Aibu to not buy it her for this reason or am I worrying for nothing?

You are massively overthinking it. Every single tourist shop you go into in Australia will have kangaroo toys.

This. I'm sure some people see rabbits as pests because they eat the stuff on their allotment but I don't think that affects sales of bunnies at Jellycat.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 02/09/2023 18:55

I can't believe you have enough angst over this to start a post on AIBU about it!

It's just a cuddly toy. Why do you need to think about it for a few days?

Prescottdanni123 · 02/09/2023 18:57

If you don't want to buy it for her then fair enough but you are going to have to give her a much better reason than that.

Lyricallie · 02/09/2023 18:58

This genuinely cannot be real. Guess we will need to ban teddy bears soon as some Americans may see bears as pests.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/09/2023 18:58

I don't think that is a realistic worry.

Can you imagine a dc in the UK having random adults be mean to them for having a rabbit or mouse toy?

It just won't happen.

If there was an actual prize for over thinking, MN would provide stiff competition - but you’d still get a podium place!!

I had to re-read this was a holiday not emigrating. Who is going to bully a kid on holiday?

As for not wanting to buy a koala because it’s too ugly for you - what?!

NalafromtheLionKing · 02/09/2023 19:00

Yes, she probably will get bullied by the local adults and possibly even deported if the authorities mistake it for a real one.

NeedTheSeaside · 02/09/2023 19:03

And I thought I could over think things!

it's not the cutest jelly cat cuddly though, buy a cute one & tell her she can choose a kangaroo in Australia instead where there's a plethora of incredibly cute kangaroo toys!!

sanityisamyth · 02/09/2023 19:03

There are plenty of rat, squirrel, fox cuddly toys here too. They're all pests!

GalileoHumpkins · 02/09/2023 19:05

Don't be ridiculous 🙄

I’m sorry. You…actually think an Australian person might be mean to a child about a cuddly toy?

That’s a genuine concern you have?

Give over, OP.

Notorious child teasers the Australians. Honestly I’m concerned that you’d take your children there at all. Especially the cities.

Make sure you have a qualified child therapist on call for your return.

RaininSummer · 02/09/2023 19:08

People seem to getting jolly odd lately. What a thing to worry about.

ThereIsOnlyOne · 02/09/2023 19:14

Wow. I cannot imagine where this thinking has come from. Unless you just wanted to start a thread to show how aware you were of the forriner's culture....!

Mousey8 · 02/09/2023 19:17

I wish this was the only worry I had in life.

Having said that, no I don’t, because it must be utterly exhausting to get this worked up about things as simple as cuddly toys.

HorseYoga · 02/09/2023 19:17

I’m Australian. On the off chance this is a serious thread: it’s fine. Really. Like really, really fine.

The real pests are rabbits. Whatever you do, don’t take a rabbit cuddly toy with you. Please. < shudders at the potential consequences >

This is possibly the craziest thing I've read on mn in a long time 😄

And in case the OP thinks this is a joke. It’s not. Pet rabbits are forbidden in Australia as they are such a pest.

Now if you feel the same about the rabbit toy, and every other cartoon rabbit out there, then no, don’t buy the kangaroo.

LookatEsa · 02/09/2023 19:25

Make sure you don’t take any cuddly toy elephants or monkeys to India!
😂
Bananas <wondering whether someone would take offence at a banana soft toy>

Riapia · 02/09/2023 19:26

If you wait until you get to Aus you could get the real thing.
They’re overrun with the fuckers there.
😁😁😁

GalileoHumpkins · 02/09/2023 19:36

You might be very grateful for that kangaroo toy if someone gets trapped down a well.

Is it true that you can’t even use the R word there (a bit like Voldemort in Harry Potter)?

I think you’re getting it mixed up with Portland 😉

(BTW you can have pet rabbits in Australia, except in Queensland.)
