AIBU for judging friend's parenting

whatjusthappenedd · 02/09/2023 07:53

I ran into an old friend a few days ago. She was sat with her baby sharing a slushie and plain pancake from a dessert place. Baby is 9/10 months old based on the month she told me she gave birth. The baby kept drinking from the straw and wanting more. Now... I really don't want to be judgemental of other mums' parenting decisions, but I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Bear in mind these franchised dessert places' products are usually filled with not only sugar but tons of other crap. AIBU? Is this normal?!

You couldn’t believe what you were seeing? You probably need to get out more.

I couldn’t get het up about the pancake tbh. The slushie doesn’t seem like it would be a great idea to give a 10 month old, but hey, not my kid not my problem.

Seashellies · 02/09/2023 07:56

Yeah it's grim, lots of people don't see the issue though and I wouldn't judge her as a parent on one tiny thing, no.

No they don’t. It’s the sugar that stops it from freezing. No one could drink them if they had antifreeze in them.

jallopeno · 02/09/2023 07:57

It's fine. She'll realise when she sees the contents of babies next nappy that it wasn't a good idea.

Flipflopflopflip · 02/09/2023 07:57

Yeah no way would I give a child that age a slushie, reminds me I saw a kid in a pushchair the other day swigging from a bottle of coke, must only have been about 2. I mean how hard is it to buy a bottle of water instead?!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 02/09/2023 07:57

And yet here you are choosing to do just that.

Haha that's true. Went abroad last year and my daughter had some watered down juice for breakfast treat, I don't know wtf kind of juice it was but her nappy was orange lol

An ex boyfriends sister used to give her two year old a full bottle of coke with a full sized bag of haribo and wonder why her was so hyper 🤔

Yes, you should have performed a citizen’s arrest.

I really thought you were not supposed to give babies added sugar until around age 1 (ideally 2) from a health perspective, and all mums I know don't either. Have always been strongly advised by health visitors and doctors about this, hence why I was genuinely taken aback when I saw it. Came on here to see if I'm the unreasonable one, didn't even know it was a thing for babies so small

Wouldn't worry about the pancake. I wouldn't give my young child a slushie but each to their own.

TheDestinationUnknown · 02/09/2023 08:07

Is it ideal to give a baby a slushy? No
Would I do it myself? No
But on the grand scale of parenting it's really not that terrible. I've certainly seen worse.

toddlermom99 · 02/09/2023 08:09

God who on earth cares Confused I've never given my toddler any type of sugary drink but at 10 months old I would let him have tastes of all types of food, it's really not the end of the world

Approaching · 02/09/2023 08:09

What’s your own diet like? Do you follow government guidance strictly? We all live in glass houses.

Everyone judges other people’s parenting. The trick is to keep your mouth shut about it.

PinkRoses1245 · 02/09/2023 08:10

Assuming it’s not a daily thing, you are being judgy

Hiddenvoice · 02/09/2023 08:10

I wouldn’t give my baby a slushie but a bit of pancake isn’t too bad .

There might also be stuff going on that you don’t know about. When my dd was 9 months old she was fairly unwell and barely eating and drinking. The hospital, gps and health visitor said to feed her anything she will take and not to worry about amount of sugars as she needed them. For a month she had a really terrible diet but it helped her to start eating again. People probably judged me too but I was doing what was best for my child.

SuchiRolls · 02/09/2023 08:13

Not judging but you’ve gone to mumsnet to make a post about it? I honestly wouldn’t give it much thought. What a waste of time.

Tilllly · 02/09/2023 08:14

You can't help how you felt about it but it's not as if you berated her
It's hard not to judge sometimes

turntgelightsdown · 02/09/2023 08:16

If you're not sure which month she gave birth then presumably you're not that close. This isn't ideal but it might have been a spur of the moment thing. Just support and be nice to your friend. Once the little one is running around like a whirling dervish, your friend will soon happily cut excess sugar out. 😂

SnowyPetals · 02/09/2023 08:17

I would have internally raised an eyebrow, the same as I do when I see toddlers drinking juice from a baby bottle, but not said anything. Ultimately it's none of my business, but yes, I would have silently judged.

Yabu yes.

loveyoutothemoonandtosaturn · 02/09/2023 08:22

My daughter gave my 16 month old some of her slushie on holidays, his next nappy was bright neon green, I've never seen anything like it! (Sorry not the point of the thread 😂)
