Police shoot pregnant woman dead (USA)

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:35

Ok America, since when did it become normal for police officers to point guns at pregnant women accused of shoplifting?
She didn't have a weapon or get violent. Turns out she hadn't stolen anything either.
If I was black in America I'd be scared to go out 😪😪😪
This is probably the worst thing I've seen ever.

Footage of police with guns drawn

Bodycam video shows Ohio police fatally shooting pregnant black woman

Ta'Kiya Young, 21, appears to advance the car towards an Ohio officer before a single shot is fired.

That is entirely correct. But generally the Police aren't stopping just for the fun of it. If you refuse to be sensible and say the truth eg 'I'm Callum Dan. I drive a van. Just delivered a can & now I'm off to see my girlfriend Kerry-Ann' . They may well stop you longer as you for as example, you appear similar to a suspect in a nearby crime etc.

No need to be beligerent and a dick about it.

HamBone · 03/09/2023 20:35

@Inmybirthdaysuit ”Ghost guns” are also a huge problem-unregistered, illegal firearms that can be bought on the street. That’s often how teenagers get hold of them, for example.

The 12-year-old who was shot here on Friday was likely shot by another child and it may be gang-related. ☹️

There's a whole YouTube collection of people who know their rights and interact with the police and mention their rights. It's called Auditing.

It is important to know what the police can and can't do.

iamwhatiam23 · 03/09/2023 20:05

@Carpediemmakeitcount tbh the police don't HAVE to do anything however members of the public HAVE to comply with a request from a police officer or face consequences if they don't!

No they don't until they get caught and then they have to do something. Sarah Everard complied and look what happened. Police are there to protect and serve not abuse their power. Weren't the fire brigade looked into last year for misogyny and racism???

Seems to be a pattern.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 20:39

• Any Policeman anywhere in the world would certainly have suspicions of somebody driving a car with no number plates that doesn't fit their profile, and by that I mean of lower income NOT black.

Yes probably. And why would that mean she should be shot ?

Do you get shot because you have a car with no plates and doesn't fit your "profile "?

Do you know she looked "lower income"?

Do you know the police knew she looked " lower income " other than when they briefly glimpsed her before she was shot.?

@CallumDansTransitVan

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 20:43

So much apologist nonsense.

@CallumDansTransitVan

She absolutely didn’t deserve to be shot, @sunglassesonthetable but honestly, here in the US, you’d be daft not to comply with the police officer’s request, because you know that they may shoot.

It doesn’t make it right, but anyone who lives here knows that’s the reality.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 20:45

Having had previous contact with the Police she knew how she should behave in the situation she was in.*

So she likely knew she would be shot ?

Do you think the policeman knew how to behave ?

iamwhatiam23 · 03/09/2023 20:46

@cakeorwine but if an officer is stopping you and asking you those things then there is generally a reason for it, they don't just do it because they feel like it! Yes you can refuse to answer them or comply but they can also arrest you if they have reason to believe you have done something 🤷‍♀️

loislovesstewie · 03/09/2023 20:46

No, it's pointing out that attempting to leave when a police officer is trying to talk to you won't end well.It gives the impression that you are trying to hide something , and that the something is an ever more serious issue.

So.

You don't have to comply and obey the police.
You said you did.
You don't. Unless they have a lawful reason.

Frequency · 03/09/2023 20:49

I'll say it again...

It doesn't matter if she was Rosemary West. The police did not have any information other than she was suspected of shoplifting. Last time I checked shoplifting doesn't carry the death sentence.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 20:50

But what about your assertions about the low income and the expensive car?
Exactly what relevance would that have @Carpediemmakeitcount

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 20:52

I'd also be questioning why a 21 year old with two kids, one on the way who first became pregnant at around age 15, was driving around in a very new looking circa £53k car.

How is this relevant to the Police Officer shooting her?

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 20:54

That was for @CallumDansTransitVan

Apologies to @Carpediemmakeitcount

sunglassesonthetable · 03/09/2023 20:56

And @HamBone ! Got in a right muddle here!

iamwhatiam23 · 03/09/2023 21:04

They generally don't stop people for no reason @cakeorwine 🙄. Do you seriously think they have nothing better to do?

HamBone · 03/09/2023 21:05

@sunglassesonthetable

That was me saying she was daft not to pull over, not the other poster.

Honestly, though, and perhaps other Americans can back me up, the reality of the situation here in the US is so different to the UK.

ANYONE, including a middle-aged white woman like me, knows that the police may shoot here if you don’t comply with their request to pull over. So many people have guns here that if you don’t comply, the police will assume that you’re armed.

I’m not saying it’s right, but that’s the reality. This lady absolutely didn’t deserve to be shot, but I can’t understand why she didn’t pull over, she was taking a huge risk.

Maggiethecat · 03/09/2023 21:07

People on here talking about her having had kids at a young age and low income, details dug up after her death, as if justifying her death.

what world do we live in? seriously?

cakeorwine · 03/09/2023 21:07

iamwhatiam23 · 03/09/2023 21:04

Once again:

This is what you said

"tbh the police don't HAVE to do anything however members of the public HAVE to comply with a request from a police officer or face consequences if they don't!"

You are wrong.
You do NOT have to comply with a request from a police officer.

The request must be lawful.

HamBone · 03/09/2023 21:07

And I’m not trying to victim-blame, I’m just explaining what it’s like here.

iamwhatiam23 · 03/09/2023 21:11

@cakeorwine when making that statement i was replying to a pp who said the police need to earn people's trust!

Clavinova · 03/09/2023 21:13

Skinthin
I mean you can clearly see from the video that all of that is utter bollox
Stop apologising for this heinous crime

I wasn't apologising - I quite clearly posted that I thought 'Ta’Kiya Young and her unborn child died tragic and unnecessary deaths' - however, I'm still not sure whether the police officer who fired the shot is criminally responsible.

You can see from the video footage posted at 16:43 that the car didn't have 'license plates'. Blendon's police chief confirmed in his press statement that the car didn't have 'license plates' - at least accept that point.

It's still my opinion that the first officer who approached the car (confusingly named as Officer 2) initially tapped or rapped on the car windows. In fact, the more video footage I see of Officer 2 I think his response was quite reasonable - not least because he was approaching someone sitting in a car without plates, but a store member had just pointed the driver out as being involved in a crime. At no time can I see him take out his gun and his stance appears non-threatening.

the [officer] in front could have put his gun down and stepped aside. The vehicle wasn’t even moving quickly

Impossible to judge without seeing unedited video footage and hearing expert opinion.

The misdemeanor quotes I posted are simply that - quotes. The Independent newspaper has reported the same quotes.

I'm not going to lie if I was a cop and asked someone to get out of their car and they didn't that would be my first hmm something is suss about this person, then they have an expensive car without plates even more suss, then they try to drive away despite the fact I'm standing in the way? The more I assessed that situation the more I would think oh shit, I'm not dealing with a lovely person here. Again I'm not saying she should have been shot, I don't know what their protocol in a situation like this is but I do know that by the time she started driving her car that didn't have any plates, having already displayed the fact she has no regard for police, in my direction I'd be crapping my pants. I can see how adrenaline was pumping in that situation.

I do think that her being in an expensive car without plates is relevant because it would build up the picture in your mind of who you are dealing with.
