Police shoot pregnant woman dead (USA)

Ok America, since when did it become normal for police officers to point guns at pregnant women accused of shoplifting?
She didn't have a weapon or get violent. Turns out she hadn't stolen anything either.
If I was black in America I'd be scared to go out 😪😪😪
This is probably the worst thing I've seen ever.

One of the reasons why I would never visit the US. Years ago when I was a student living in terraced accommodation there was a early morning chasing at around 5am where many police vans stopped just right outside my bedroom window. I only woke up from the lights flashing through my bedroom. The police jumped through people's gardens, caught the guy and saw me at the window and apologised for waking me up and chitchatting quietly with the guy they caught. There was no noise, no violence, no shouting and pushing and shoving.
My DH used to travel to the us for work and he said the us police are so aggressive and they can pull you over for anything even if you haven't done anything wrong and things can escalate very quickly. The case of this woman is again being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor woman and her unborn child and poor kids now having to grow up without a mother.

Frequency · 02/09/2023 10:20

^I want to hear that say when someone drives their car right at you.
She wasn't executed. She was shot while resisting arrest.^

Someone did drive their car at me and my child at a very similar speed. It came to mind immediately as I watched the video. I initially reacted the same way as the officer did and put my hand on the bonnet. When that did not work I pulled myself and DD out of the way.

At no point did I consider acting violently towards the driver.

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 10:20

@IClaudine why on earth have you reached that the only alternative was execution?! Of course they shouldn't have shot her, I'm simply making the point that it's unrealistic to be stopped by the police & have them move over whilst you drive off. It's just not going to happen!

You're disgusting. A pregnant woman gets killed by police and you write this shit?

Teder · 02/09/2023 10:21

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 10:17

She very likely panicked as opposed to didn't comply. In turn the police panic & then you throw guns into the mix & it's a disaster. In an ideal world it wouldn't happen but human nature gets in the way.

But the idea that the police should have shot the tyre or jumped out of the way, let her drive off & called it in later is completely unrealistic.

She wasn’t armed. She wasn’t being arrested. Stop excusing the murder of a pregnant woman. There is zero excuse. It’s murder. It’s systemic racism.

Shoot a tyre.

It's completely unrealistic to think in these situations the police are going to shoot a tyre or an arm. It's just not going to happen.

Genuine question - why is it unrealistic?

If the mission is to stop the suspect from leaving the scene that seems like a good way of doing it.

Why? It would be the sensible option.7

Yes and she (and her unborn baby) deserved to be murdered for probably being terrified and leaving the scene of a minor crime. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 That’s assuming she did actually shoplift!

Stressedafff · 02/09/2023 10:23

It’s even more unrealistic to think you could potentially be executed in the street for something as simple as looking a certain way

Sayitaintso33 · 02/09/2023 10:23

He shouldn't have shot her, absolutely inexcusable, but shooting at tyres in a full car par would have been pretty dangerous.

Let shoplifters escape rather than shoot them and when they are apprehended, and they will be in this world of ever present CCTV, they can be charged with escape or resisting arrest or whatever the appropriate charge is.

yes it is. For shoplifting, they can take her reg and visit her at home. If they see enough evidence she shoplifted. Only all this arsehole shouted was, 'they said you took something'.

Aranas · 02/09/2023 10:24

All the posters saying she deserved it, the police did nothing wrong, etc. are vile, vile people. It's genuinely scary to think people like you exist.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/09/2023 10:25

She could have engaged and chose not to. Play stupid games, win stupid prices.
It's tragic that she died but she did not help herself there

God alive. 🤦‍♀️

I'd call the "stupid games" shooting someone point blank through a window.

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 10:25

Why unrealistic? What terrible thing would have happened?

For one police are trained to shoot for the biggest target which is the torso. It's why officers didn't shoot Mark Duggan's hand.

It's also not the norm to be pulled over by the police & then drive off before been "allowed" too. Have you been stopped by the police? I have. Obviously the women should not have been shot at but gun culture is a massive part of why police are trigger happy.

@gillygeey I am curious, are you black or an ethnic minority? Do you live in the USA?

katepilar · 02/09/2023 10:27

America is so sick in so many ways. So much aggression and anger. Their history explains a lot.

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 10:28

yes it is. For shoplifting, they can take her reg and visit her at home. If they see enough evidence she shoplifted. Only all this arsehole shouted was, 'they said you took something'.

But why would police stop someone for suspecting shoplifting or whatever & then without investigating further just let them drive off? You are looking at the situation with hindsight, I'm assuming when the cops stopped her they didn't think initially they would kill her?

saffronsoup · 02/09/2023 10:28

Teder · 02/09/2023 10:18

Did you see this statistic posted?

From the office of Statistics from Aug 1, 2023 "The rate of fatal police shootings in the United States shows large differences based on ethnicity. Among Black Americans, the rate of fatal police shootings between 2015 and July 2023 stood at 5.8 per million of the population per year, while for White Americans, the rate stood at 2.3 fatal police shootings per million of the population per year."

Yes I did but not sure what that has to do with compliant people being shot and killed by police?

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 10:29

@Teder minority but white passing & live in England.

I just believe these senseless shootings will never stop unless gun culture changes & I don't think you can separate the two.

This. Everyone saying she is innocent- none of the stories read like she was?

Saoirse82 · 02/09/2023 10:29

Poppyblush · 02/09/2023 07:50

But if police say stop, why not stop???

Fear probably.

This was murder plain and simple, but of course lets blame the victim who had the awful crime of being black.

well that's one view. However another is that it's good to see these things in black and white (to use an expression). Because over my years I have got sick and tired of mentioning incidents and behaviours to people to be told that "no one could possibly think that".

Well, yes, they can. And here they are.

Aren't some posters paid to post links to whatabout stories to distract the discussion ? Maybe they don't work full shifts weekends ?

You’re showing yourself to be extremely ignorant, amongst other things. I guess you’re ok with babies dying on boats as well….are you called Katie Hopkins by any chance?

Have you heard of the autonomic flight, fright or freeze response? None of us can confidently declare what or how we would respond in this situation.
