What things do you wish you lived near to?

Whenever I visit a new town or city I feel jealous of the amount of places there are to sit out in lovely surroundings and have a nice breakfast. I live in a village that has a shop and a church, nothing else. I could drive 15 minutes into town and get a breakfast but it would be at a chain pub on a main road. There's literally nowhere nearby where I could sit outside, people watch and enjoy a nice breakfast and a good coffee on a little cobbled street while reading the paper on a Sunday morning. And it upsets me.

What do you wish you lived close to?

The sea. I'd love to be able to hear the sea from home.
I also live in a small village, no shop, no public transport, nothing so I would quite like to be able to walk to a shop or cafe.

my82my · 01/09/2023 21:17

I live by the sea and have done for 19 years but occasionally really miss living in London.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/09/2023 21:17

The sea. Or the Lake District. Though the Peak District is only 45min away. But not the same.

Cherryana · 01/09/2023 21:17

I would like my house and area but it to be bathed in sunshine most of the year. So closer to the sun!

Fiddlesticks24 · 01/09/2023 21:18

The beach, obvs.

Somewhere that served a good avocado on toast with a poached egg on top. A bit passe I know, but it's my favourite lunch and the cafe that used to do it round here stopped serving it 😭

WickedSerious · 01/09/2023 21:18

A bank.

The impossible dream.

StamppotAndGravy · 01/09/2023 21:19

I used to live near mountains and miss being able to go skiing whenever I felt like it.

I have many many cafés, lakes and a forest though, so can't complain! Just need a decent Cantonese restaurant

ILoveChocolateandCoffee · 01/09/2023 21:20

The sea. I grew up in a house where my room had a sea view. I loved that view, I never took it for granted. I have my own family now. I live a long way from the sea and do really miss it.

Theatres
Music venues
Cosmopolitan cafes and bars
Urban walk routes

I guess I'll always be a city girl .

BackAgainstWall · 01/09/2023 21:22

The sea

Confetto · 01/09/2023 21:23

A mountain I could ski on. One of the Scottish mountains would be fine.

Craftycorvid · 01/09/2023 21:23

Civilisation!

A great market town.

The sea.

Great libraries and theatres.

We can dream.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 01/09/2023 21:23

The sea, particularly Southwold/Walberswick. Not because they are popular or anything like that but because DH loved the area and it is the place that I feel closest to him.

Robotalkingrubbish · 01/09/2023 21:24

I would love to be able to step outside my front door and walk my dog in the countryside.

Ilinaya · 01/09/2023 21:25

I now live near the sea (although not close enough to see it). I'd like to be even closer to it. But I really miss being near woodland, being able to cycle into the woods, that was my one big mistake in moving. Having been brought up near woodland and even being near woodland in outer London, I just assumed it was everywhere, but there's next to no woodland here.

TrickorTreacle · 01/09/2023 21:25

Most of my friends are long distance, so would love to live nearer to some of them as long as the place still has good rail and bus links. Where I live now is ok but the buses don't run on a Sunday.

NeedToKnow101 · 01/09/2023 21:26

A lido. Grew up near a great one, spent all summer there. I still live in the same area but lido is now a garden centre. Gutted for me and DC.

phoenixrosehere · 01/09/2023 21:27

A city where there is plenty to do and partake in. Most of the things I’m interested in, I have to take the train to London because they have more available times and aren’t limited to only a specific time of day. I like to learn different crafts and how to make things and I learn better in-person for some things than trying to learn on my own via YT.

Ilinaya · 01/09/2023 21:28

This is a really interesting thread. I've always taken being near cafes for granted, but it's not something that has ever really appealed to me.

JollyJellyCat · 01/09/2023 21:28

I hear you, my village has a church and a gun shop. Nothing else!

I'd like to live near a constantly rotating free children's activity that is never dismissed as boring. Less than 15 minutes drive away providing maybe animals one day, funfair another, the beach on day 3, hill walks on day 4, soft play to round the week off, and tasty lunches. A bit like the Faraway Tree but with a family annual pass and less climbing.

VestaTilley · 01/09/2023 21:32

@Ratfinkstinkypink 💐for you.

KohlaParasaurus · 01/09/2023 21:32

I have a nice bit of coastline and a national park within a few miles of home, but I hanker after a decent indoor swimming pool, a prestigious music venue, and a Pret a Manger.

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/09/2023 21:33

I would love to live by the sea or a large body of water. I crave it.

But not enough to want to move out of London.

I wouldn’t do well as a rural person: wouldn’t work for me for many reasons.

My dream is to have enough money to buy a small cottage by the sea and keep my London home. Probably won’t happen.

ManchesterLu · 01/09/2023 21:35

Just somewhere with a nice walk I don't have to drive to. My childhood home is perfect for this, and I moved into town when I moved in with DP. It's okay and good in other ways, but I really miss the countryside.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/09/2023 21:37

The sea.

Ive always wanted to.

I got to live by the sea for just six months, but exh didn’t like it and manipulated me into moving away again. Now I’m trapped where we are due to having kids together and not wanting them to have to travel long distances between parents.
