What things do you wish you lived near to?

Whenever I visit a new town or city I feel jealous of the amount of places there are to sit out in lovely surroundings and have a nice breakfast. I live in a village that has a shop and a church, nothing else. I could drive 15 minutes into town and get a breakfast but it would be at a chain pub on a main road. There's literally nowhere nearby where I could sit outside, people watch and enjoy a nice breakfast and a good coffee on a little cobbled street while reading the paper on a Sunday morning. And it upsets me.

What do you wish you lived close to?

An amazing library and a good repertory theatre that puts on different plays every month. Grew up in a town that had both and took these for granted. So rare these days.

I do think that for most people a nice market town is a better option than a village..

I’d like to live near the sea, a loch, the highlands, a forest… I mean I wouldn’t because I like living in cities overall, but if I had a double life. As it is I’d like to live near a fancy gym with a pool that doesn’t use chlorine and a sauna.

GEC44 · 01/09/2023 21:44

The sea, and a beach promenade.

But also a railway station and bus stop. I used to live within 5 minutes walk of a mainline station into London, and 30 seconds from the bus stop! It was so convenient for getting into town, especially as I worked there. Buses every 15-20 minutes.

These days I'm a 10 minute drive/30 minute walk to the nearest station (a large mainline one) and although the bus stop is a 5 minute walk if that, it's not a frequent service.

Oh I missed the most important thing - I’d like to live near all my friends, who are as it is spread out all over the city and in fact the country.

Obviously if I wasn’t such a lazy arse I could make some local ones.

Findyourneutralspace · 01/09/2023 21:47

A lido or John Lewis/Oliver Bonas.

I do live near the Lake District though. Sorry @Toddlerteaplease

Toddlerteaplease · 01/09/2023 21:50

@Findyourneutralspace so do my sister and parents. My dad keeps posting photos of his walks!

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 01/09/2023 21:51

A train station!

Stbextherapist · 01/09/2023 21:54

A farmer's market - I live in a deprived town (though am comfortably off myself) and long to be able to buy fancy food!

Lesina · 01/09/2023 21:54

The Pakleni Otoci just off Hvar Town.

SocksAndTheCity · 01/09/2023 21:55

A really good fish and chip shop.

WillowCraft · 01/09/2023 22:00

Somewhere to swim outdoors, not fussy whether sea, lake, river or swimming pool

Poorlymumma · 01/09/2023 22:00

I live near the sea and love it, never take it for granted.

However I travel to London on the train to go to the west end and art galleries/museums, there is nothing like that where I live.

WhootDaFook · 01/09/2023 22:00

A dentist that’s taking on NHS patients. Been on the waiting list for nearly 3 years now

Womblegreen · 01/09/2023 22:01

I would love to live by the beach. I would love to live closer to my Dad. My Dad lives close to the coast.

It seems simple, but I could never live in his area, it’s too densely populated and I love my rural space in Wales.

I live by the sea and have done for 19 years but occasionally really miss living in London.

Same

AuraBora · 01/09/2023 22:10

Interesting thread. I live in a beautiful national park.. only 15 mins from the sea. Lovely market town with cafes etc just a couple of mins walk.
Really appreciate what I have but actually really miss being near a river...
Used to live on a lovely part of the Thames and altho I wouldn't go back (to live), I remember with a certain nostalgia the lovely walks and sometimes paddles (in our canoe) down the river - although edge of London, it was was so quiet at night and beautiful on a summer's evening. Lots of wildlife. I used to really like the smell of the river too!

greyhairnomore · 01/09/2023 22:12

Paris 🙂

AmygdaIa · 01/09/2023 22:14

I’m on the Wirral and we have NO WAITROSE despite being the ideal sort of place for one… . The best we’ve got is some bizarre petrol station version which flogs ready meals to unsuspecting caravanners.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 01/09/2023 22:15

I wish I lived near a proper market.

The nearest village has a 'Farmers' Market' one Sunday a month. It consists of local urbanites dressed up in designer wellies, carrying wicker baskets and their pooches.
You can buy expensive honey, even more expensive chilli products, 'artisan' bread at nearly a fiver a loaf as well as locally reared lamb chops at twelve quid a pair.
Not to mention all the cloth bags , with your name in plastic for £9.99.

Don't get me started on the vast, overpriced Turkish delight/olives stands.

Utter shite.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 01/09/2023 22:15

Apologies.. I was ranting.

OrigamiOwls · 01/09/2023 22:18

Disneyland. Or Disney World. Either would be fine.

On a more realistic note, a train station.

SocksAndTheCity · 01/09/2023 22:20

That's a very fair rant @SpamFrittersYouSay .

For my part, I live ten minutes' walk from Borough Market which must be the farmers market to end all farmers markets, but like most people I can't actually afford to shop in it.

Sometimes I just accept it and go for a walk round to look at all the nice things and eat the free samples. 😀

Mummadeze · 01/09/2023 22:22

Aldi and Primark. And my family.

megletthesecond · 01/09/2023 22:25

The sea.
Failing that a town with an outdoor lido to swim in.

FettleOfKish · 01/09/2023 22:25

We're by the sea and awash with the kinds of breakfast places OP mentions.

We've no decent theatre or concert venues at all though, a total cultural desert. I've taken to going to London as often as possible to soak it up.
