Son is starting teacher training on Monday. It's an inset day, so there won't be any children in. He's been told to go smart casual, what does that include do you think?

Clean and tidy.
No fancy dress.
If he's in to cross dressing, probably best not to do it that day.

Ponoka7 · 01/09/2023 12:30

No ripped jeans, no sweat/joggers etc, more expensive polo/t shirt, with at least short sleeves. Shoes or smart trainers, no open toe. Are you in disagreement about what he should wear? If so let him go in wearing what he wants to. He is there to learn all aspects of the job and it's up to his manager to correct him.

delilabell · 01/09/2023 12:32

Our schools pa had a thing about no jeans so smart casual meant no denim. 🙄 smart tshirt, chinos maybe,? Smart trainers. Good luck to your son!

Astromelia · 01/09/2023 12:32

Safest would be suit trousers, shirt, loafers or similar. But he’d probably be fine also in a plain neat t-shirt, smart jeans and clean, new-looking trainers.

I assume it’s a teaching day, not placement?

ThePoshUns · 01/09/2023 12:33

Chinos, polo shirt, shoes or smart trainers

BakingBeanz · 01/09/2023 12:36

Chinos and a shirt.

cocksstrideintheevening · 01/09/2023 12:37

Chinos and a shirt or smart polo

Hairush · 01/09/2023 12:37

At our school it means jeans are OK as long as not ripped, clean trainers OK, shorts OK but not sports shorts or too short.

In his shoes I'd do tidy jeans and trainers with an ironed tshirt

I don't know where some people live but no-one here wears chinos for anything Grin

Astromelia · 01/09/2023 12:38

Oh sorry, you said inset day. Smart jeans and trainers, but he’d best plan to wear a shirt the rest of the time, most trainees do

No, we're not in disagreement about it. He asked me what it meant, and I wasn't sure. When I was his age it meant trousers and shirt, but tie not needed. I don't want him feeling overdressed though if the others are in nice jeans and tee-shirts.

All the cool kids wear chinos in my office!

Defiantlynot41 · 01/09/2023 12:52

In my office it's "you need to wear something with a collar"! So a shirt or polo shirt is fine, as is a normal T shirt worn with a jacket or shirt over it.

Bottom half, nothing grubby, scruffy or ripped!

I've never seen anyone round here wearing chinos for years, maybe they're back in and it hasn't reached this far north! I think he's going with smart jeans & tee-shirt. Still debating between shoes and trainers.

In my workplace (school) that would mean jeans (not ripped or baggy), clean trainers or shoes (whichever he's comfortable in) and a nice t-shirt/polo top/long sleeved top.

Not necessary to have suit trousers and shirt - that would be classed as smart these days.

Good luck to your son :)

fettuccini · 01/09/2023 13:02

I wouldn't class jeans, t shirt and trainers as smart casual. Surely that's just casual. I also think the type of trouser worn makes a world of difference between smart or not. Chinos are very much still 'in fashion' and work in the corporate world as smart casual. Chinos or his smart jeans, smart clean trainers and a shirt would be what I recommend he wears. Not just a t-shirt. Maybe an overshirt over the t shirt, but not with jeans. Get him to have a look on Pinterest.

DistantSkye · 01/09/2023 13:04

I think jeans and either a shirt or t-shirt and trainers would be ok as long as they're not scuffed or ripped or whatever.

I find the idea of a dress code for inset a bit weird though, and Im not in England so my judgment might be a bit off! I've read about trainers/sandals/jumpsuits not being acceptable for teaching in and they're all totally acceptable where I am!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 01/09/2023 13:04

Generally I take it to mean no sports wear and no blue denim

luckylavender · 01/09/2023 13:06

Safest would be chinos and shirt with shoes not trainers

Confetto · 01/09/2023 13:08

Primary or secondary? For primary insets, everyone just wears their normal clothes - jeans and a t-shirt for men basically.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/09/2023 13:12

I can tell you what 99% of staff including SLT will be wearing on Monday if you like?

Dark jeans, shirt (short sleeved, checked, striped, tattersall, jersey or cotton, all ironed), clean trainers.

There's always one in most schools who will turn up in a rugby shirt and jeans (normally a governor) or football shirt, trackies or shorts (never PE, though). The one person always stands out.

Houseofpainjumparound · 03/09/2023 09:42

Younger Male teachers around here for primary tend to wear smart jeans with a polo/collared tshirt or a short sleeve plain ish shirt. No big logo/images etc.

Male older teachers tend to wear chino style trousers, or the golfing type with a collared tshirt or button shirt which are plain.

So no ties/white style shirts, funeral type suits etc but also not football/rugby/band tshirt, round neck tshirts, scruffy shorts/joggers

IndiKid2015 · 03/09/2023 09:46

I know a couple of young male teachers with really good taste in clothes, they’d probably wear dark blue/black jeans, smart trainers a, a plain T-shirt and shacket.

Kazzybingbong · 03/09/2023 09:48

When I was teaching, inset days were jeans, hoodies and converse/trainers.

At a job I once had, jeans were ok as smart casual in any colour but blue. 🤷‍♀️
