Son is starting teacher training on Monday. It's an inset day, so there won't be any children in. He's been told to go smart casual, what does that include do you think?

I think it means that your son is clearly an adult with a job - a really important job, good for him! - so maybe you don't need still to be dressing him. (Yes, I know he asked for your advice). He'll be a fab teacher whatever he wears to an inset day.

Hesma · 03/09/2023 19:56

In my school it means smart jeans, polo shirt or t-shirt and shoes or trainers on inset

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/09/2023 20:00

Inset day at my school-jeans are ok.
Term time is no denim.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/09/2023 20:07

My school is no blue or ripped denim, no bare shoulders and no open-toe or open-sided shoes. Legs only bare an inch above the knee

Julimia · 03/09/2023 20:31

Oh give me strength it's your son thats starting this so it's what he thinks. You need autonomy by the bucketful to be a teacher! Start now. Good luck

It’s his chance to make a first impression on his new colleagues, in a new career. Worth buying some boots/shoes, trousers and a shirt that can be used later for parents’ evenings and maybe as part of an interview outfit.

And his colleagues' first impression of him will be "Well, he misjudged the dress code for an INSET day..."

Why do people say things like this on Mumsnet? You have no idea if he'll be a fab teacher. He might be a terrible teacher.

I think being overdressed would be more uncomfortable than being underdressed. I would go with dark coloured jeans a t shirt or polo shirt in a plain colour and clean, plain trainers.
I would iron it all to stop it looking crumpled and make it a bit smarter.

100% agree with you.

This. I worked as a teacher in many schools. None of them allowed blue denim for anything, ever.

Where were these schools? Because I’ve been teaching in England and Wales for 35 years and in a variety of schools - city, rural, state, independent (all secondary) and in every single one most people wore denim - usually blue, because it usually is - for training days.

Yep, 17 years in a range of secondary schools and everyone wears blue denim on training days!

Clean and tidy.
No fancy dress.
If he's in to cross dressing, probably best not to do it that day.

🤣🤣

Confetto · 04/09/2023 19:52

So... What did he wear and what did all his colleagues wear?

FedUpWithEverything123 · 04/09/2023 20:10

To me it means no jeans OP

Oblomov23 · 04/09/2023 20:14

Watching. For ideas for smart casual. Liking these lists.

Smiler168 · 04/09/2023 22:09

This made me lol! 😂

AJ65 · 04/09/2023 22:16

Clean and tidy, like a teacher!

starlight13 · 05/09/2023 08:35

Shirt and trousers, no tie. Smart shoes and well groomed.

Oldbird69 · 05/09/2023 11:52

He went in smart jeans, ironed teeshirt & smart trainers. The others were similar. Kids in after today, so it'll be trousers, shirt and tie after that until he gets his PE uniform he said.
Thank you so much for all your answers 😀

Our head was in denim shorts today!!

Oldbird69 · 06/09/2023 13:26

Crikey! But then again, a lot of schools are like greenhouses now.

Chinos and a shirt.

This
not T-shirts or trainers

Well the OP has been back on to say that's what everyone was wearing. Clearly, all the pps who work in schools had a better idea of what smart casual meant in that context than those who don't.

asdfgasdfg · 16/09/2023 12:44

The school I invigilate at has a dress code for staff and pupils. 6th form have to wear office attire so all males have to wear smart trousers shirt and tie and shoes not trainers. Iff course the girls still seem to wear wide belts......
