Any play or musical you really enjoyed.
Does not necessarily have to be showing right in the West End either.

Yes definitely - my 50th bday pressie this year was tickets to The Play That Goes Wrong. All my kids, icl 12 year old twins - loved it.

Puffykins · 01/09/2023 04:40

The best 2 I've seen this year are Dear England (which is about to transfer) and Guys and Dolls (which I took the children to for the second time in as many months, yesterday - it's that good.)

zoemum2006 · 01/09/2023 05:17

@MCOut a strange Loop is genius and brilliantly performed but very disturbing/ upsetting in places. I’m glad I saw it but didn’t “enjoy” it.

I’ve loved:

Six
Hamilton
Moulin Rouge
Matilda

sunshine7981 · 01/09/2023 06:44

Six is absolutely awful - no storyline - just spice girls tribute act singing songs about Henry viii. I've been to lots of other musicals I've enjoyed but this was terrible.

ExpatForLife · 01/09/2023 06:51

My Neighbour Totoro. We saw it last year at the Barbican and they are bringing it back this fall. It is so good - I had a smile plastered on my face the whole time and so did both my teens (one of whom hates live theatre as a general rule).

cheeseisthebest · 01/09/2023 18:47

Loved Six, agree Greatest Day was pretty awful.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 01/09/2023 18:58

I recently saw Mrs Doubtfire. Great fun.

Hbh17 · 01/09/2023 19:05

Guys and Dolls
Hamilton
Cabaret

These are absolutely the top 3, IMO.

I'd add Matilda, Harry Potter & Cursed Child and The Play That Goes Wrong as worth a watch

The Motive and The Cue (wascNational Theatre & coming back to the West End before Xmas) was excellent.
I'm really looking forward to Kenneth Branagh's King Lear.

(I heartily disliked both Wicked and Six - also recommended here - which demonstrates that it comes down to personal taste).

Hbh17 · 01/09/2023 19:07

Oh yes, I forgot, Crazy for You is fantastic.

If you are taking young teens, Cabaret may not be suitable, although it is completely brilliant.

XelaM · 01/09/2023 19:07

Mouswtrap (an absolute classic)
Hamilton or Les Miserables (the two best musicals on the West End)

This is exactly what I thought, but so rare to find people who feel the same. It's not a proper musical, just a sub-par pop concert.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/09/2023 19:10

Cabaret is incredible.

I enjoyed Six too.

MarkWithaC · 01/09/2023 19:29

Definitely Guys and Dolls, and standing not sitting.

GCSister · 01/09/2023 19:50

Six - the songs are incredibly clever and funny.
Only Fools and Horses - absolutely loved it.

FiddleMinger · 01/09/2023 19:54

Hamilton

Jules912 · 01/09/2023 19:58

Hamilton
Lion King
Les Mis
Play that goes wrong
Harry Potter and the cursed child
Back to the future

JemOfAWoman · 01/09/2023 20:05

Just seen Operation Mincemeat. Flipping brilliant, would see it again in a heartbeat!!

Absolutelynotfor2019 · 01/09/2023 20:12

Les Mis …absolutely fantastic and the fact it’s the longest running West End Show ever says it all!

TheOGCCL · 01/09/2023 20:14

Not Phantom.
I enjoyed Crazy For You a lot more than I thought I would, nor did I realise it’s from the 90s.
Have my eye on Six, for a 12 year old I’d go for that.

Springduckling · 01/09/2023 20:15

The Lion King
Six
School of Rock - is great if it's still on

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 01/09/2023 20:26

Guys and Dolls. Absolutely brilliant.

PermanentTemporary · 01/09/2023 20:32

Dear England. Finished at the National now but it's transferring to the West End.

Tinytigertail · 01/09/2023 20:44

Hamilton
Book of Mormon
Heathers (it may have closed now)
Six

I would be interested to see what people who have seen think of A Strange Loop. It’s for older teens and up I think. It made me depressed but the writer is clearly so talented and I loved the performers. I can’t wait to see what else he comes out with.

I suggest Hamilton, Phantom of the Opera or Moulin Rouge for happy easy watching.

I saw it with my 20 year old and we really liked it but didnt love it. I would have definitely taken my 17yr old if she'd been in the country. l also think the writer is huge talent in the making, but somehow it didn't quite seem fully formed just yet.

lordloveadog · 01/09/2023 20:55
