Any play or musical you really enjoyed.
Does not necessarily have to be showing right in the West End either.

Heard great things about Mamma Mia the party - for a different type of show. Going in a few weeks and can’t wait!

  • play that goes wrong is hilarious
  • was very underwhelmed by six - waste of time and money for me

@2023usernameNew my 10 year old when she saw it loved it and was properly belly laughing.

Thanks, I’ll definitely check it out.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 31/08/2023 23:05

Phantom is a classic
les mis again so
wicked brilliant
but something out of the box is Frozen…drury lane - really was excellent and you don’t need children to attend!!

loreau · 31/08/2023 23:09

Maybe not Book of Mormon for a 12 year old girl! It;s very very inappropriate.

My 13 yo boy, loves Hamilton.

He thought Dear England was OK, I did not: it tells you simple facts about recent football history you probably know and then explains how the middle classes helped the neanderthals win the world cup by talking about our feelings...bleugh...self congratulating nonsense.

Pennyplant19 · 31/08/2023 23:16

Choir of Man. Real feel good play!

NeedToKnow101 · 31/08/2023 23:18

2:22 was really good. I don't go theatre much so can't recommend lots of things.

DivingForLove · 31/08/2023 23:22

Opération Mincemeat Is superb but might be a bit lost on someone who didn’t know the original story.

Hamilton is insanely brilliant but please watch it on tv/listen to the soundtrack to immerse yourself in it first. Massively improves the experience 😊

melj1213 · 31/08/2023 23:24

I just recently did a show trip to London with a couple of friends in July and these are what we saw:

Operation Mincemeat was fabulous - I have been listening to the soundtrack for weeks as it's just that catchy, we only went because someone had mentioned reading about it being "Six meets Hamilton comedy with a WW2 setting" and we had a free evening so got tickets and I'm so glad we did.

Six - we've seen it a few times and it's great

Heathers - one of our (collective) favourite shows

Les Mis - my second favourite musical ever (after Newsies which we also saw the same day but that run finished at the end of July) and one of my friends hadn't seen it so we had to go

The Mousetrap - a classic and I like to see it every few years.

Hamilton - one of my friends was desperate to see it again as soon as we came out, fortunately I have tickets closer to home for when it comes on tour later in the year

Moulin Rouge - I mostly booked it because I loved Jamie Muscato last time I saw him in Heathers and I've watched a bootleg from Broadway with Aaron Tveit as Christian so couldn't pass up the opportunity to see it live.

Another vote for six
I'd live to see Ain't too proud to beg but it's closing I believe
Jersey boys is great

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 31/08/2023 23:32

Cabaret
Hamilton
A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic

maltravers · 31/08/2023 23:34

Another vote for Guys and Dolls -brilliant entertainment. The Effect at the NT if you’re after something more hard hitting is very good.

That is definitely a minority viewpoint!

Womencanlift · 31/08/2023 23:40

Crazy For You if you like the old school Hollywood type musicals. My current favourite and Charlie Stemp is one hell of a dancer

Back to the Future
Tina
Phantom
Les Mis

The Theatre Cafe diner (not cafe, although that’s good for a quick bite) is good fun before a show. Food won’t win any Michelin stars but the entertainment from the waiting staff that sing is great. A few of the staff have now went off to perform in shows themselves. When we went about six months ago they were singing every second song. Top tip though, don’t bother with any of the “special” tables - you get a much better view from one of the standard tables

SuperNewMe · 31/08/2023 23:41

Operation Mincemeat
SIX
Back to the Future

very very different. All brilliant.

Sorry to jump in, as I'm not the OP, but as a huge Back To The Future fan Im torn between really wanting to go see it and also thinking WTF noooo and have visions of Marty and Biff cheesily dancing and singing and bursting into song at random moments 😂
I'm scared it'll ruin the film for me lol, it's one I literally know word for word 😁
Is it good?

ididntthough · 31/08/2023 23:42

Back to the Future is excellent. I only went to lend a hand with the kids as it’s not my sort of show but it was really great 😊

Meredusoleil · 31/08/2023 23:42

Mamma Mia
The Lion King
Six
Wicked
Matilda

Do you think a 12 year old girl would enjoy The Play that goes wrong ?

Absolutely. I went with my 13 yo this week and we both laughed so much. Best thing I have seen in ages

maltravers · 31/08/2023 23:45

Sorry, I missed that your DD is 12. Not The Effect then, which would not be suitable, but definitely Guys and Dolls.

cheeseisthebest · 31/08/2023 23:46

Hamilton

SausageinaBun · 01/09/2023 00:00

The Play That Goes Wrong - if you like the TV programme, it is well worth seeing the play.

Witness for the Prosecution is really atmospheric at City Hall.

Wicked, SIX and Matilda are my favourite of the musicals I've seen.

tour

Superunknown1 · 01/09/2023 00:49

Stepdaughter is 11 (almost 12) and adored Hamilton on the West End and Wicked too, she’s seen Six on tour a few times as well and really enjoys it (it’s quite short but a different theatre experience). Husband works technical in a theatre so I get to see a lot of the touring shows and only ones I’ve watched and truly thought were awful are Mamma Mia and Greatest Days (that ones touring rather than west end at the min though). Also very much not a fan of Jersey Boys despite it having a huge following.

CallieQ · 01/09/2023 00:54

Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre
Brilliant
