Thinking of moving to Horsham to be closer to dhs family and work. Can anyone advise what it is like there and what social life is like there. What activities are recommended, local restaurants and bars, nightlife and family activities for kids please.

Thank you

There was another post about horsham within the last year. It stuck in my mind as I'm from there! I think the consensus was it was still nice. Secondaries seem good.

Too many houses, not enough doctors surgeries etc. Nearest proper A and E 30/40 mins away. Crime has increased in recent years.

Good schools, pleasant town centre, Horsham Park is nice, decent swimming pool.

Oh gosh @ChangedName654321 yeah that doesn't sound great! What about social life and night life?

The Anchor, The M Bar and The Everyman Cinema Terrace for drinks are good. Piries Place has some nice restaurants. Also, East Street for restaurants.

Lots of good churches. Warnham Nature Reserve is pleasant. Southwater Country Park. The Bridge Leisure Centre has a climbing wall and cafe area. Stooks at Newbridge Nurseries is great for tea and cakes etc

I Iived there for 20 years. Always hated it. Don't really know why. It's bland I think.
Moved to Somerset 3 years ago and never been happier.

Nah it's not as good as it was.

I've lived in Horsham for over 40 years. I'm kinda stuck as my kids are in school now and husband has work here.

Main issues:

  • schools are good but places for secondary can be hard. A bunch of boys in southwater were sent to burgess hill last year as places for boys can be tricky - they recently made the boys school take on girls and it has messed the balance.
  • gp surgery. Can never get a face to face appointment. Main surgery in town is understaffed and too many patients. We are in a hospital black spot. It was not fun travelling all the way to east Surrey when I was about to give birth in car - 40 min drive 😂
  • crime. It's gone down hill. More pickpockets, violent teens, mugging than I have ever known
  • housing. Too many overpriced houses. Not enough services. I want to move but I can't find a house I can afford. It's very overpriced here.

What’s you AIBU here?

RH12 · 31/08/2023 23:02

It’s really lovely. Been here over 10 years. But it depends massively on where you’re moving from & therefore what your reference point is, and what’s important to you.

Restaurants - v good and great choice
Bars - pretty good
Nightlife - depends what you mean. Bars and pubs and sometimes live music in the pubs; theatre and restaurants; clubs not so much
Family and kids’ activities - plenty around

I’ve never had an issue with GPs etc but it’s true that we don’t have a large hospital very close so could be a consideration.

I don’t think the crime is bad but again this is relative to what you’re coming from. Some antisocial behaviour sometimes but it’s not a pervading atmosphere or anything like that.
