What would you do?
I'm kore sad than angry .
Would you ground them?

Annaishere · 31/08/2023 18:08

Oh no. Take all their money away for 6 months

NotAMug · 31/08/2023 18:10

I would be really upset too. I have literally just seen my DS2s friend vaping, also 15. I told DS if I see him vaping then he's grounded indefinitely. I am really relaxed about most things but I had to watch my auntie die of lung cancer when I was 15 and she was in her 40s.

Auntieobem · 31/08/2023 18:10

Honestly? I'd think they were being a bit stupid, but it wouldn't bother me.

topshotta · 31/08/2023 18:12

Sorry but this is so common i wouldn't waste energy getting upset about it

topshotta · 31/08/2023 18:12

And they will do it no matter what probs just use their friends

HappiDaze · 31/08/2023 18:13

It's annoying but at that age they're all at it

Trenchfootinthescottishhighlandstoday · 31/08/2023 18:14

Same boat op. Ds14 has ASD and already booked in for a programme on peer pressure and drugs.

ConnieTucker · 31/08/2023 18:14

Id also be coming down hard on this. They wouldnt be getting spending money for the foreseeable.

friends of ours went another way. Went ballistic at first, and then have been giving him money to buy them. He is 13. Madness. And he is now rebelling in different ways (and constantly) since this had been accepted. His behaviour had declined rapidly.

Merrilydancing · 31/08/2023 18:16

What parallel universe am I on where posters are ok with kids using a nicotine based product for which the long term effects are unknown.

Vaping is not a great thing even if they are all doing it.

They're really not all at it at all.

Ericaequites · 31/08/2023 18:18

Using nicotine leads to ill health in the long run. Come down hard on this. Perhaps there are YouTubes of people using voice boxes showing the consequences of tobacco use.

Kay286 · 31/08/2023 18:18

Honestly …. Try stop them , take it away , checks draws , check what they spend their money on …. Lecture about the dangers … but if they want to do it they’re going to find a way to do it.

It’s not great, I wouldn’t be happy, but I think i would feel at least it isn’t cigarettes

bellac11 · 31/08/2023 18:21

Like smoking, drinking, weed etc, its very difficult if they have developed a habit. Not all vapes have nicotine in them but many do and the type of cheap stuff kids buy could have any old thing in them.

Its probably more helpful to try to educate them about why its not healthy and good for them but its difficult because vaping is sold as a good option to people giving up cigarettes and as if they are not harmful. I think there is more evidence now that it is

I find them really anti social anyway

TheLizardQueen · 31/08/2023 18:25

i would say most kids of that age vape nowadays. I do think it’s better than cigarettes. I was smoking cigarettes at that age. My 16 yo DD (17 next week) was smoking disposable vapes, rightly or wrongly I bought her a rechargeable one with 0% nicotine. She is happy with this and (hopefully) won’t get addicted with no nicotine.

Annaishere · 31/08/2023 18:25

they are harmful. Not as bad as cigarettes. I used to smoke. Now vaping and it feels like my lungs are full of oil

MidnightOnceMore · 31/08/2023 18:29

I would take the responsible parent approach but also accept that they can ignore me.

So I'd restrict money, explain the health risks, offer to help with any addiction.

This is not true. Most DON'T vape.

Teateaandmoretea · 31/08/2023 18:31

They wouldn’t have unsupervised access to money. I have made it clear to dd that is what would happen.

Seafarer · 31/08/2023 18:33

I would talk to them about it. Explain that you understand when you are growing up you want to experiment but point out the negatives again for health & cost & reinforce that under no circumstances it happens on your premises.

I saw boys from my DCs school vaping recently and they are only 12! Unfortunately it happens in school in the toilets as well a lot.

Teateaandmoretea · 31/08/2023 18:44

The problem is the disposables. I don’t understand why they aren’t banned. The reusables are better for the environment and available to adults. But they aren’t as easy for kids to use opportunistically and they look anything but cool.

Presumably someone will be on to say we can’t ban everything yadda yadda but if plastic straws were banned why not vapes?

Choccyoclocky · 31/08/2023 18:55

My 14yo sister vapes 20mg ones. My mum knows but has given up. I've tried to get her to stop but she says she needs it. DH was a smoker for years but once he stopped, he is only on 3mg. He says any more than that is painful so I hate to think what she's doing to her body. Her and her friends steal them from shops.

Caswallonthefox · 31/08/2023 19:08

My ds wanted to try vaping because his friends were. I told him I'd rather he didn't.
I can't do a lecture because I'd be a tad hypocritical because I am an ex smoker.
Fortunately having tried it he hasn't carried on.

AnnieSnap · 31/08/2023 19:08

Ask yourself what you will accomplish by “going bananas”. If a 15-year-old wants to vape, they will do. Talk to them by all means, but kicking off will just alienate them on the issue.

Annaishere · 31/08/2023 19:10

I don’t see how they can vape if they want to if they’ve no money. The disposables hardly last for any length of time and their friends will get sick of sharing all the time. But even if they did it wouldn’t be as addictive as them having it constantly
