My sister is still annoyed with my parents for not stopping her smoking from age 12 or something

For those of you who are cool with it I suggest you read this www.health.harvard.edu/blog/can-vaping-damage-your-lungs-what-we-do-and-dont-know-2019090417734

To be honest, I've never found 'going bananas' ever did much good when dealing with a teen. Usually it just made them more secretive and much less likely to be open to a sensible discussion. They just found more ways of hiding what they were doing and I would be the last person to find out. Pretty much counter productive really.

Dramatic · 31/08/2023 23:32

I'm a sucker for statistics but there is absolutely no chance this is right. My DD has just left year 11 in a school with 300 pupils per year, even just picking her up and driving her to school I'd say 50% at least are puffing on one at any given time

Not unreasonable at all, OP. I’d not allow any access to money for the foreseeable future. Vaping is horribly addictive and (as the very least) pretty bad for you. Those condoning it because “everyone else does it” are as bad as the ridiculous teenagers who think that blames others excuses any kind of poor behaviour.

I caught my daughter earlier this year, age 13. I took her phone and had a serious conversation, I know all the kids are doing it it's the craze. I remember being her age and doing things I shouldn't, I wasn't too hard on her, I told her it's bad and it upset me her doing that. What she chooses to do after that is up to her but if she's caught the punishments get worse, and I have eyes everywhere.

I would be going bananas too! The health impact of these highly addictive vapes is unknown. I can’t believe that more isn’t being done to address the issue in teens. The UKSA messaging is totally irresponsible. https://www.rcpch.ac.uk/nations/scotland/childrens-doctors-call-outright-ban-disposable-e-cigarettes-in-scotland

The thing is this will happen, eventually. But not until our generation of kids are addicted to nicotine. Shutting the door after the horse has bolted. Vapes should also be behind the counter in the short term with cigarettes. But instead anyone can slip one in their pocket and walk out of shops. It truly beggars belief.

You're very naive parents if you think simply cutting off money will stop the habit.

It will make life a hell of a lot less comfortable and will make it harder to vape as much. You are very naive if you think vaping is okay.

CornishGem1975 · 01/09/2023 08:08

I don't think it's okay. Where did I say it's okay?

But it won't stop them if they want to do it. They share them with their friends, they'll borrow money, they'll steal them if they want them.

It won't stop it happening.

No, for most kids there is a big jump to steal. Some would okay, but that is by no
means universal.

So....effectively encouraging her to sneak them behind your back if she can?
She's 13!!!!
Remove her phone for a month. The second time, for the school year.

Gobsmacked that there are parents on here that seem fine with this. Downward trend in parenting

Dd2 starts secondary school in September. Two of the kids in her Y6 class told her that their parents would let them start vaping once they were secondary age. Another one brought a vape in. It truly beggars belief.

I agree. 'Lots of kids do it' and the fact that it's too much effort to try and stop them are pathetic reasons not to at least try to look after your child's health. Some parents seem scared of confronting their child or maintaining boundaries at all.

KimberleyClark · 01/09/2023 08:34

I agree that disposables should be banned and tbh think that vapes should only be available from a pharmacy. This would not be a problem for anyone genuinely using them as a smoking cessation aid.

I just think they need to be hidden behind the counter like cigarettes. Prevents theft, makes it harder for new vapers to work out what to ask for. Makes sure they are available for those who need them. I don’t think vaping products being less available than cigarettes is a good thing. But the disposables are the biggest problem with kids anyway.

waterrat · 01/09/2023 09:05

When I was 15 (A long time ago) most kids my age smoked - it's shit but all you can do is keep up the education.

waterrat · 01/09/2023 09:06

I hate seeing people in our local shop pick out the cotton candy/ sweet flavoured ones it's gross. They should be treated like cigarettes put in alarming packaging and not allowed to be advertised at all - our local Londis has a large sign outside "VAPES HERE!"

Id be furious too. I have a 16 and a 17 year old. I don’t know if they vape. I’ve not found/seen evidence of it but they had a party a few weeks ago in the garden. There were 25 odd friends there and nearly all of them were vaping. When I drop my eldest at college there are dozens vaping outside. I woukd definitely restrict money. I smoked from about 13 and my mum used to completely lose the plot every time she caught me. I finally gave up smoking for good when I fell pregnant in my thirties. For all of her shouting and grounding and walloping me I never stopped.

Edited

Why did you allow all these kids to vape in your garden? I don’t get that, genuinely. I’d be really annoyed if you let my child think you thought it was okay in that way.

My 14yo sister vapes 20mg ones. My mum knows but has given up. I've tried to get her to stop but she says she needs it. DH was a smoker for years but once he stopped, he is only on 3mg. He says any more than that is painful so I hate to think what she's doing to her body. Her and her friends steal them from shops.

I’m genuinely interested in how they steal them? Considering they are behind the counter and usually with the cigarettes in cabinets?

They aren’t, they are on shelves in most shops. Eg Sainsbury’s for one.

snowmanshoes · 01/09/2023 09:08

I’m sorry but all the posters saying that really most aren’t vaping are naive as a bare minimum.
Also quoting stats lol - do you also believe inflation was only 8 percent too?
Please I rarely see a teen without a vape and I travel up and down the country….

Teateaandmoretea · 01/09/2023 09:08

Our local corner shop which is the only one my kids can walk to they are behind the counter, presumably to prevent theft though. It isn’t law they have to be.

Oh that’s interesting, they are in my local (Big) Sainsburys and in the supermarket I work in.
