Ok to get the mundane stuff out of the way

No one but DP and me have been in the house since Friday

We’ve lived here 20 years and are the only ones with keys. All spares are where they should be

We have 2 burglars alarms which we set when we go out. They have not been activated.

We have cctv camera front and rear covering all entrances to the house and garden. The only comings and goings recorded are DP and me.

We have 2 dogs

DP never plays practical jokes.

Now the mystery. My lovely heirloom grandfather clock stopped sometime since Monday night. I can’t say exactly when but I noticed this afternoon and asked DP to wind it.

5 minutes later he came into the kitchen looking rather pale and told me that the clock has stopped as the winding chains are missing. Both of them. They are some 8ft long with heavy weights on the ends and to remove them requires some dismantling of the clock as well as knowing how they are fixed.

They are not on the floor of the clock case. They have quite simply vanished.

We’ve gone from WTAF to freaked out, annoyed and now somewhat amused. Clearly something doesn’t like my clock!

I am totalling unable to come up with a rational explanation for this. There just isn’t one that either of us can come up with

Have you wound the clock since your last service. If not I would be taking the face off to check if batteries have been added and the clock gutted.

I suspect this may be correct.

Or it’s the cat!

Me too. The next step is going to the library and furiously studying the history of the house only to find a massive creepy back story that weirdly, noone in the neighbourhood will talk about. You'll then finally find one eccentric neighbour who will finally talk in hushed tones about who used to live there and how they died..... dun dun dun...

Yes! OP rushes back from the library to tell DH what happened in the house. The rain is lashing down, freak thunderstorm raging. As she runs into the hallway, DH is coming down the stairs clutching an old newspaper detailing the murders that happened in the house in 1850. Just as OP starts to explain what DH already knows, the grandfather clock chimes...without it's chains.

Someone living in your attic? 😱

Only mice... None of the attics are boarded and have around 250 years of dust accumulation. We'd hear them sneezing!

@MsFannySqueers We have a blocked up doorway too but luckily we are allowed to put things in it - it's now bookshelves. All our animals though will on occasion stare at it for long periods. I'm sure they are seeing or sensing something I'm not

@KittyKingdom No - the clock mechanism is exactly as it should be. I watched the clock mender install it in the case in my hallway. It's a skilled job.

I'm now getting an image of a massive rat wearing black high heeled shoes...

Great. I'm now getting this advert on MN (never seen it before). I guess they don't have any adverts for rats.

Imagine if you hear it chiming at 3am now OP 🤣 👻

Scaryghost · 31/08/2023 16:28

moved into our home 5 years ago. My sons bedroom light keeps coming on. 3 times last week I went in during one day to turn it off. The switch goes up light goes off, yet the light comes on and the switch is down. 🤷‍♀️I really can’t explain it

It really does have to be your DP.

If he’s anything like most men I read about on here, he will have a terrible debt-ridden secret life (usually gambling/Only Fans related) and he’s weighed them in for scrap as a desperate last measure.

I’d keep an eye on your teaspoons.

Verv · 31/08/2023 17:35

How bizarre.
I have had a similar weirdness in my flat.
A hot water bottle and a very specific kitchen knife completely disappeared.
Modern flat, single occupant, vanished without a trace. I used to say it was the Bermuda Triangle.
Never did find either of them, both vanished overnight and didn't turn up again even when I packed up to move.
Was really pissed off about the knife as well as it was the only fancy-pants one I had. It was a big damascus steel Japanese job that had I had on a magnet above the cooker. Never put it anywhere else, thats where it lived, and pouff.

LuciaPillson · 31/08/2023 17:44

Another CF thread

So there I was, tucked up in bed with a touch of the Spanish flu, when all of a sudden I opened my eyes and, you wouldn't believe it but a pair of CFs had moved into my house and made themselves at home! Of course I went to confront them but they had the audacity to pretend they could neither see nor hear me!

They just went on their merry way, they bought some strikingly hideous lampshades, one of which I have to admit I threw at the female... but I just missed her so I don't believe it counts as a deadly sin. I also pinched her things, a bit of fabric, embroidery thread to work on my tapestry, her diamond tiara to swan about in, and just to be difficult I wore her shoes and stomped about in them for six months, then gave them back to her all worn out.

Nothing's worked though, they haven't had the decency to move out or to acknowledge my presence, so I've taken the chains out of their clock so that they won't know what time it is and will from now on be perpetually late for lunch.

OP I believe things actually do disappear but they often come back

MsRosley · 31/08/2023 18:07

I reckon it's not so much that things disappear, more that we shift into different timelines where those things never existed. And sometimes we shift back again, or into another timeline where they do exist. The Mandela effect points to this phenomenon.

Your neighbour's cat got in, couldn't get out again, got tangled around the chains and then ran off when it smelt crab sticks being thrown through a window. Definitely what happened

@Verv, its likely the knife went in the bin. My corkscrew disappeared into thin air a few years ago. It was only when I found a cork in the utensil drawer a few weeks later that I realised what I'd done.

fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft · 31/08/2023 18:51

It is so strange!

Did you see my question about whether the time it stopped had any significance? Was it 653?

I only ask as ,y sister died in a car accident on 26th , then inexplicably my thermostat kept resetting to 26 degrees and the lights kept flashing.

It stopped when I asked for it to stop .

junbean · 31/08/2023 19:38

It sounds like a former inhabitant of the house is still inhabiting. I recently had a similar experience, but nothing went missing. Around the time I became pregnant with my youngest a male ghost started appearing to my older daughter in her room. She said he would just look at her, smiling. She wasn’t afraid of him, but I was annoyed, ghost or not it’s not okay to stare at my daughter like that! Then she told me his name was Albert. That really got my attention, because that was my great grandfather’s name. He died as a young man when attempting to save another man who was drowning. The man pulled him under. My grandmother was very young when it happened and he didn’t get to see her grow up. Albert is an uncommon name nowadays, it’s very old fashioned and my daughter probably hasn’t heard it, and I haven't told her that story. I asked her what he was wearing and what his hair looked like, as I’d seen pictures of him and she hadn’t. She described him perfectly. I started thinking it was my ancestor Albert visiting his family. But after the baby was born it wasn’t long before things got creepy. The spirit (or perhaps a different one) began impersonating my daughter and I. If I was in the hallway or bathroom across from her room, I’d hear my daughter calling me. But it wasn’t her. When my daughter was in her room she’d hear me calling her. It became a daily thing to shout “Not me! It was the ghost again!” I also think it was messing with my baby at night. She was waking up every single night the very moment I was falling asleep. It could be 9pm or 10:27 or 12:45, any odd time, no matter what she woke and cried the exact moment I was falling asleep. I have insomnia so it’s really hard to fall asleep and just a mean thing to do to me. I didn’t mind Albert visiting, but whoever this was had crossed a line. One night it said “Hello,” in a loud whisper at me. That was the last straw for me. It felt like they were trying to establish itself in our lives. They weren’t doing any serious harm, like not evil, but not very nice either and I was afraid it would escalate. The next day I was at a coffeeshop when a Navajo man came up to me and said if I needed any help with spirits he could help me. He said he just finished clearing someone else’s house. I was shocked so I just gave a polite answer and left as soon as my drink was ready. Later I realized I should have taken up his offer. I decided to do it myself since I didn’t get his card or anything. So I remembered something my Hopi friend told me- when a relative passes away they sprinkle juniper ash outside the doorway so the relative knows to move on. I had a jar of juniper ash I had bought from a Navajo woman awhile back, and I had some smudge sticks. So I smudged the house thoroughly and had my daughter join me in saying, “You are free to go.” over and over as I smudged. Then I took the jar of ash and generously sprinkled it outside along the entire perimeter of the house. It’s been about a month or so, and there hasn’t been any paranormal activity since then. My youngest has been sleeping well too. I think Albert came to see his great great granddaughters and another mischievous spirit came through with him and decided to stay. To me, it sounds like a former resident of your home is still there and doesn’t want to move on. I would do some cleansing rituals and ask it to leave. I imagine it might be more difficult since they probably think they own the house and they’ve been a bit violent. I think you should ask your husband to help too. Good luck and I hope something works!

Don't know if this has already been said by someone else, but I told my DH about this thread & he asked, "Is it a wind up?".😂

MissLC · 31/08/2023 20:57

I'm totally missing the point here but you should 100% apply to take the clock onto the repair shop on bbc 🤣
