To book a holiday for Friday?

Would I be an idiot to book a lady minute holiday on Friday given the air traffic issues? Do you think it'll be resolved by Friday? Just thinking about a last minute break with DH and the kids before school starts. Centre parks is fully booked.

DH has a work colleague stuck in Greece, can’t get a flight for another week

Maybe that answers my question then 😝

I would but not one I'd have to fly to!

DDivaStar · 29/08/2023 22:35

I wouldn't fly, there are loads of other options.

Lolaandbehold · 29/08/2023 23:22

I be a holiday booked for Friday. I’m planning on going..

Lolaandbehold · 29/08/2023 23:22

*have!

Magicmagician · 29/08/2023 23:36

Eurostar and a city break? They’ve put on additional trains to cover the air traffic issues so that might help with availability

TheChosenTwo · 29/08/2023 23:38

I’m flying home on Monday, slightly worried!
could you book a holiday in the U.K. or using consider the Eurostar?

FatBurger · 30/08/2023 04:53

Unfortunately I live very far north so ferry and Eurostar are a serious trek for us. I just wanted a bit of sun. Such a shame but I guess it's just not going to happen!

I think it would be fine. Most of the disruption at this stage will be for people who were booked on flights when the system was down or immediately afterwards.

Girasoli · 30/08/2023 05:54

European trains might be busier than usual/cancelled too due to a landslide covering the tunnel between France/Italy.

We were meant to be doing Milan/Paris by train at the weekend but are doing it by overnight coach with DC instead (planes mega expensive due to air traffic issue on top of train issue)

Maybe book a UK break?

Oh fuck NO. I’m meant to be doing Paris - Milan by train on Monday.

ElleDeeCB · 30/08/2023 06:30

@EmpressaurusOfCats Look at the Paris - Nice - Ventimiglia- Genoa - Milan train route as an alternative?

EmpressaurusOfCats · 30/08/2023 06:33

Thanks @ElleDeeCB, I’ll have a look.

floribunda18 · 30/08/2023 06:38

Flights seem to be arriving on time now at Gatwick as normal. I'd check live departures and arrivals at the airports involved and with the airline involved to see if they are expecting further disruptions.

Pippa12 · 30/08/2023 06:40

I 100% would! Enjoy every second of sunshine, booking late means you can check thx forecast and the flight situation.

millymollymoomoo · 30/08/2023 06:41

look at info and delays on your nearest airport
id book it personally.

Unless the OP is in Greece and wanting to holiday in the UK why would that be a factor?

I would totally book a holiday if I could, the fact that loads of people are still stuck from Monday isn't going to affect future package holidays and the risk of some other event happening is the same as it was before Monday

balzamico · 30/08/2023 06:45

Dd flew to France yesterday with no problems at all

BethDuttonsTwin · 30/08/2023 06:47

I would. The media always blow these things up. I saw claims of NO FLIGHTS FOR 12 DAYS!” On closer reading this is from locations that only have one or two weekly flights anyway, so understandable. I was looking at flights last night and they’re still for sale over the next few days.

Imnoonesfool · 30/08/2023 06:53

I think the problem is with people who’s flights back to the uk which were cancelled they are struggling to book them onto kr find sufficient flights to fly them home. Usually airlines put on repatriation flights when incidents occur but don’t seem to be doing it and I’m wondering if this is because they are not required to pay compo in this situation.

my OH was due to fly out of LGW on Monday , his flight was cancelled so he booked onto one yesterday afternoon and flew out no problem he said LGW was fine

Fairyfalls · 30/08/2023 07:11

Our holiday got cancelled at the airport on Tuesday after we had checked in. We called Jet2 and booked a five night break on Friday instead so at least we get away for a few days. Flights going out seem to be ok now, generally.

LlynTegid · 30/08/2023 07:18

Just make sure it is not Ryanair, BA or perhaps easyJet and not a London airport, and I think you should be OK.

Usernamen · 30/08/2023 07:23

I 100% would book a holiday - go for it, OP!

When do the kids go back to school? If next Monday, booking on Friday would mean a very short break?

PinkCherryBlossoms · 30/08/2023 08:11

Can you wait until tomorrow to decide?
