Autumn

Even though the weather has generally been pretty pants this summer I sort of feel ready for autumn now. Do you set goals for yourself going into a new season? What’s on your to do list for this autumn?

I love Autumn. Around bonfire night I go downhill for a little bit and then Christmas helps but Winter is so awful for me and makes me feel so depressed and sad.

Autumn is that beautiful, cosy, perfect season.

cardibach · 30/08/2023 12:52

@Blanketsburg the only thing I said was mad was preferring cold hands to warm, while simultaneously trying to warm them up with a hot drink.
I don’t do sundresses or wafting. And all the other stuff autumn people say they like I also like - I just do them in summer too. Hot meals, hot drinks, candles, puzzles…they don’t need autumn.
I’m suggesting people could enjoy the things they like all year round. It doesn’t need to be grey, damp and expensive for the heating first.

I agree that you can do autumn stuff in summer.

But most of it is just more enjoyable in rainy, chilly gloom.

And if you do it in the summer someone is guaranteed to tell you to stop doing it and get outside to enjoy the sunshine.

Ignore them. I do.

Herecomestreble1 · 30/08/2023 13:04

I love autumn. I love the shit weather, the bright days, cold days, wet days, all of it. I'm up in the dark regardless of the season because I have a baby, so bright mornings aren't a concern. But mostly I like the not umming and awwing about whether I'll need a coat/ jacket 🤣

lastminutewednesday · 30/08/2023 14:29

I love autumn. I always feel it as a more renewing vibe to it than new year-these sort of back to school feeling.
I'm (nervously) starting a new job next Monday and the kids are going back to school (two to new schools) various days next week. So it feels like a new start for us all. In between then and now I plan to :

Finish decorating the bathroom
Deep clean the house
Prune the garden back a bit
Put away most of my summer clothes (keeping some back for the inevitable India. Summer) and get my new autumn bits out.

What's hampering this is the fact that I've got two HUGE and needy dogs staying whilst a friend their owner is on holiday. I really wish I hadn't said I'd have them now tbh but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I will try to do some bits if they ever go to sleep.

lastminutewednesday · 30/08/2023 14:30

I've also got a ton of autumns decs which I don't normally put up til end September but I might do a few here and there a bit early this year

Sorryiexist · 30/08/2023 16:01

@Moonshine5 not yet, my local cafe has an amazing one so I might go and scope it out next week.

As to wishing your life away, it's so not. It's embracing the season as it is, accepting and adapting to make the most of now. I think it is far more 'wish your life away' to be bitter and wish summer would last forever.

Also to quote Sheldon Cooper, I only drink hot chocolate in months with a ber in them. After all, what's life without Whimsey.

As for Chai tea yes it is enjoyed in India but I have found it much more available in the more mountainous regions where it is colder. I mean, you do you, I just prefer it in the cold and a side effect of being indoors more is you have more time for lounging around with a tea.

Obviously in theory. Having kids gets in the way but I do that in the garden anyway.

Crunchymum · 30/08/2023 16:18

I am not going to pack away any summer gear / get out the coats just yet. Last year we had October half term on the beach (in fact we had better weather then than we did on same beach holiday last month)

I do enjoy all the seasons but do agree with a PP - we had a very long winter, barely any spring and a really inconsistent summer so I am not quite ready for autumn yet!

MoonshineandMagic · 30/08/2023 18:15

Thats exactly what I said! Enjoy now for what it is and Autumn when it’s actually here 🤦🏻

DOBARDAN · 30/08/2023 18:23

Autumn is my favourite season, for me this summer wasn't too bad, although most of June was unbearably hot and humid, I was grateful for a slightly cooler July and August, now looking forward to taking more walks with nature, in cooler air, appreciating the beautiful colour changes of the leaves, being able to breathe properly at night, getting more sleep as a result, and wrapping up warm and cosy in the evenings.

SprinkleOfSunak · 30/08/2023 18:36

I always to plan to do the following:

An ‘Autumn walk,’ taking in the breathtaking beauty of the season, and collecting leaves etc.

Drink hot chocolate.

Do lots of baking of comfort food: Homemade pizza, chilli con carne, rocky road, hot cookie dough, apple crumble and soft brownies.

Wear plenty of Autumnal colours.

Celebrate my Birthday, Halloween, and Fireworks night.

Watch Strictly.

Plan and shop for Christmas.

Autumn is my favourite season after all!

I really can't understand why posters go onto a thread about a subject they specifically don't like to tell others who are enjoying the subject to tell them how much they hate it .
Would you go onto the pregnancy threads to tell others how much you hate pregnancy, what about the tack threads .
It's seems that some people can't keep their rage under control .

Rosesandstars · 30/08/2023 19:17

Multipleexclamationmarks · 29/08/2023 21:01

Sulk mainly. I like summer and I feel cheated this year.

Me too. Autumn is my least favourite season!

Because a significant minority of Mumsnetters are here for the sole purpose of finding things to be offended about.

TreatYoBookShelf · 30/08/2023 10:03

So some people can't enjoy autumn because some people can't afford heating? well then others cant enjoy summer because I suffer from Hayfever 😂

I also walk 20 mins (40 mins round trip) to the train station to get to work in all weathers, so essentially those people driving to work in their cars are better off than me.

Let people find the joy in their lives, it's hard enough at times.

Edited

Very well said!

HauntedPencil · 30/08/2023 19:39

I love autumn too.

I don't really feel the need to go into a rage about other seasonal preferences sorry to disappoint.

Snuggles Blankies Hot Choccies Nom Nom Nommy Noos at you.

Crispyturtle · 30/08/2023 20:03

I am so ready for autumn 😄 love a nice walk on a Sunday afternoon followed by a G&T in front of the log burner and a roast, absolute bliss 😊

LlynTegid · 30/08/2023 20:19

Generally I like autumn, there are events I enjoy (London film festival for one) and as not having school age children can have a holiday at a fraction of the cost of June, July or August. Autumn colours can be beautiful.

What I do not like is putting clocks back at the end of October, if I was the leader of the country I would change this straight away and have BST all year round.

You can't enjoy autumn if you don't plan for it.
In other countries they say there is no bad weather, it's bad preparation.
And seeing as this is a thread specifically at planning forward I'm not sure I'm the one that merits that emoji.

MoonshineandMagic · 30/08/2023 21:11

Why do you need to plan for drinking tea and sitting under a blanket? Surely people have those things all year round. You’d buy crumble/stew ingredients in your weekly shop and you don’t need to plan a walk, you just go for one!

I think social media and the retail world have so much to answer for, always encouraging us to rush on to the next ‘thing’ and usually spend money in the process. It’s nice that a lot of the things mentioned on these threads are free or natural.

I honestly do love Autumn - it’s probably my favourite season - and I really love the changing seasons in general. But it’s been proven that it’s healthier to live in the moment and that’s what I try to do. I used to hate winter but I’ve found things to enjoy and look forward to about it because I don’t want to spend months out of every year I’ve got left longing for something different.

I hope you have a lovely Autumn 🍂🍄🎃

Sorryiexist · 30/08/2023 22:02

Well if you actually looked at my list you'd see quite a lot needs planning due to seasonality.
Blackberry picking, need to go when ripe and before the birds get them.
Conkers, need to get them when they're ripe and ready.
Horse chestnuts ditto before the deer get them.
Walks, invest in the appropriate clothing (none of my old clothing fits post partum).
Scope out the best seasonal veg picking places (although I do have an old faithful)
But yes, I'll conceed I have to buy a chai syrup. Very materialistic of me. Personally responsible for burning the planet.

chillidoritto · 30/08/2023 22:15

Loving autumn to me is a bit like loving Sunday night. Or loving January because xmas is over.

Bur thankfully the Indian summer IS happening so we get to “waft about in our sliders eating salads in the garden” for a bit longer 😃😃😃😃

Nobody would be vilified for loving spring, summer or even Xmas because they don’t use such awful cliches!

MoonshineandMagic · 30/08/2023 22:22

@Sorryiexist but you don’t need to/can’t plan most of those things now! If it makes you happy to that’s none of my business but no need to be snippy - I explained my point without needing to be. Going to hide this now, cba to argue when you’re so determined to disagree.

RampantIvy · 30/08/2023 22:26

I will be making crab apple jelly when the crab apples ripen - usually early November. It's a faff to make, but so delicious with roast meats.

Sorryiexist · 30/08/2023 22:35

Yes I'm the one pissing on bonfires...

Not a November activity I want to do btw
