Autumn

Even though the weather has generally been pretty pants this summer I sort of feel ready for autumn now. Do you set goals for yourself going into a new season? What’s on your to do list for this autumn?

OP posts:
daffodilandtulip · 30/08/2023 08:36

Every season that comes, I think "this is my favourite". I think I'm just a seasons girl!

I'm looking forward to buying mini pumpkins to display, collecting conkers, lighting the fire and buying some fancy hot chocolate. Twinkly lights start making an appearance from now until santa!

TheLostNights · 30/08/2023 08:58

Apart from the endless rain in places, we have had warm weather. Not particularly nice warm, more a cloudy, humid type warmth which gives you a headache but here in London, we have had over 18C most days. People think summer should be plain wall to wall sunshine but a lot of the time it is interspersed with rain, cloud and humidity. That's not to say this summer has been a normal or good one but it's not been cold.

'autumn clean' and nesting in the last few weeks before my second daughter arrives. Then hunkering down for cosy newborn autumn/ winter days :)

It's my favourite time of year too!

Sounds lovely!

Sulk mainly. I like summer and I feel cheated this year.

Word!

TreatYoBookShelf · 30/08/2023 09:14

Why do people get so angry that some people like autumn 😂

I love autumn, can't wait to light the fire and sleep better at night because I'm not sweating out of every pore. I do feel a bit like we just had one long Spring and now we are straight into Autumn though! I have spent time in countries on the equator that have 31 degrees all year round and its so BORING. I love watching nature change and the different holidays that happen with each season.

Although I struggle to be positive about January and February...need to start booking a short winter sun break for those months.

RampantIvy · 30/08/2023 09:28

Probably because the autumn lover posts are full of clichés that are simply not true for most of us @TreatYoBookShelf

This romanticised idea of crisp, bright autumn days is a rarity when for most of us it is damp and grey with very low light levels, which isn't great for SAD sufferers.

Also, I suspect that these posters don't have to drive to and from work in the dark, usually in drizzle or driving rain. They all seem to have open fires or deep pockets to pay for heating. I think this winter is going to be financially tough for a lot of people and it is rather tone deaf to wax lyrical about colder weather.

whatdidshedotogetahillnamedafterher · 30/08/2023 09:39

I love Autumn . Having said that I dont have to trudge out in wet weather to go to work or juggle kids who want to play out in in cold damp parks! I love it when the nights start drawing in like now.Where I live I never shut any curtains but I do admit I love closing the curtains and putting the lamps on. I have begun to adjust already by planning to get the duvets out again, swap the clothes from t shirts to jumpers and going to treat myself to some new pjs.I am planning on putting up the door curtains again to stop the drafts and filling my portable heater for the summer house where I take my coffee and watch the rain. I am a bit odd like that..Autumn brings me a different kind of routine from the lazy summer months and I do move more and feel more productive with household chores as daylight is limited so I need to get things done and that is good for my mental health. January and february are the killer months for me I hate them they seem never ending.

shivbo2014 · 30/08/2023 09:57

There are so many angry autumn haters. I love summer, but autumn is great. Feels like a new start, kids back to school, I'm starting a new job, my studies start again, rainy days at home doing autumn crafts and making nice dinners, love my cinnamon wax melts and have them burning alllll the time. We have just bought a log burner, looking forward to using it, Collecting conkers, drinking my chai latte again, love my autumn wardrobe, love being home and not feeling pressure to be out and about because its sunny. Halloween and bonfire night, countdown to Christmas. Yes, getting up and out on the school run/to work can be hard work at times, and I do feel a bit cheated as we didn't get a summer but still look forward to autumn 😊

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/08/2023 10:02

I absolutely love autumn. My birthday is in October and always fell during the half term, which I loved.

I love dark evenings. I'm introverted and during the summer I feel like I ought to be out and about "making the most of the longer days". In reality I want to be at home doing a jigsaw with a vat of tea! Autumn and winter gives me a welcome get out and I feel relieved that I can indulge my innate desire to hide.

The cooler weather allows me to breathe properly. We're in SE England and summer is often too hot and horribly sweaty.

Ps I drink hot chocolate all the year round. 🤣

So some people can't enjoy autumn because some people can't afford heating? well then others cant enjoy summer because I suffer from Hayfever 😂

I also walk 20 mins (40 mins round trip) to the train station to get to work in all weathers, so essentially those people driving to work in their cars are better off than me.

Let people find the joy in their lives, it's hard enough at times.

Scaryghost · 30/08/2023 10:06

Early nights
Throws
Lamps
Candles
Hot choolate
Movie marathons
Beef stew

chicken/beef and sausage casserole

Saying that, this weekend I’ve had the grow out, lamps on, chicken casserole 🤣

Going to miss the gym in the early mornings when it’s light. Going in the dark is a hard slog!

MoonshineandMagic · 30/08/2023 10:15

It's not so much that people cant enjoy it but the constant wishing life away is quite depressing. I like to enjoy the seasons for what they are - even if the weather is rubbish there's still lots to love about this time of year. But my Instagram has been full of pumpkin shit since July and I saw Xmas stuff in the shops on August Bank Holiday - not just a few cards, full gift ranges.

I love Autumn but the race to start hunkering down 🤮 really annoys me, as does the making completely normal things like drinking tea or doing a puzzle into a 'thing'. It doesnt feel like we've had much of a summer this year (not sure where all these people who cant sleep for the heat live) but I'd like to at least enjoy the longish days and make the most of going out without a coat and pottering in the garden when I get home - there's plenty of time for all the nice Autumn things when it's actually here.

whatdidshedotogetahillnamedafterher · 30/08/2023 10:18

@Scaryghost its funny you mention early nights in your list as I have found this past two weeks my body seems to be adjusting on its own to wanting to go and feeling ready for bed earlier than normal. Its interesting to me that this is happening this year. I am liking this!!

FoxBaseBeta · 30/08/2023 10:18

I play my own bingo game as soon as I spot an autumn post, I can usually find the same bizarrely vitriolic posters on the first page.

I quite like all the seasons but I'm ready for the disappointment of this summer to end. It's just been humid, sticky and wet (in my bit of the north). If it's going to piss it down, I'd rather be under autumn layers instead of sweating in a thin summer raincoat.

anyoneanyoneanyone · 30/08/2023 10:21

Candles, blankets, slippers, red wine, lamps, electric blanket...and a big smile 😃

Blanketsburg · 30/08/2023 10:23

I love the autumn too.

Nice threads about simple pleasures like this are always pounced on by those wanting to sneer about clichés and bingo cards and so on. It's tiresome at this point and as much of a cliche as the things you're complaining about. Why not just not read the thread if it bugs you that much?

And the idea that posters who like autumn are deluded about its reality is stupid. I should think most of us have seen many British autumns by now and know what to expect just as well as you do.

Anyway, yes, I always feel better when the nights draw in. I especially love waking up to the sound of rain and the feeling of being wrapped up in a big chunky cardi with a steaming hot mug of something in my cold hands.

I'm a bit sad this year, though, as autumn means my DD is going away to university and that means there'll be no COSY (yeah, sue me) weekend afternoons watching Friends or The Office US with her.

WinterFireJanuaryEmbers · 30/08/2023 10:27

I like all the seasons. Generally I like each one more when we've had a really good go at the last one - which cannot be said of this summer Sad

However, the months will change all the same so I shan't get much choice Grin

chillidoritto · 30/08/2023 10:29

Perfect blue sky today. I’m going to sit in the garden. The Indian summer is coming - it’s official!!!! So the cosy steaming mug brigade can shove their pumpkins up their arse!!!

Sugarcoatt · 30/08/2023 10:31

I also feel a bit cheated out of summer. It’s rained right through the kids holidays. Such a disappointment.

Honestly though, I struggle with the whole “preparing for seasons before they happen” thing. The start of school next week has sneaked up on me, I haven’t bought any uniform or anything yet. Mind you, Christmas usually sneaks up on me too - I struggle to get my mind into thinking about Christmas until Halloween is over.

Autumn is my favourite though! The colours and the crisp leaves, the grey days when the sun isn’t too bright, but it isn’t properly cold yet. You can wear scarves and hats and boots but you aren’t struggling against biting wind and freezing cold. I want to plant some daffodils this year, and I’m planning to put some on a relative’s grave too, so it looks pretty in the spring. I also want to take the kids to a country cottage at half term, to enjoy the autumn colours and scenery.

Prescottdanni123 · 30/08/2023 10:33

Clean the house and get some autumn decorations up. Watch Enola Holmes films (I don't know why these have become autumn films for me but they have). I've found a recipe for toffee and apple tray bake that I have been saving for autumn. Restock my hot chocolate supplies. Buy a couple of new jumpers.

Sulk mainly. I like summer and I feel cheated this year.

I'm trying not to sulk...but I am.

Trees turning already here in the North West....

I like Autumn, but it was a long winter, a gorgeous June, and a bit crappy since then. I'd like a proper summer before an Autumn.

megletthesecond · 30/08/2023 10:35

Counting down the weeks until spring.

Bovrilla · 30/08/2023 10:43

I work outside a lot and I love autumn and spring too. The extreme seasons can be wearing, granted. January/February have little to recommend them to anyone. Equally I loathe being hot all the time, and bitey insects love me so summer isn't my favourite. Salad is boring me now, I am ready for soup, stews and food that warms and satisfies.

I love that I can go for long walks still without a coat until well into October and not be a total ball of sweat. Don't care about rain, a pair of water resistant leggings and decent fleece gilet and I am fine. Lancastrian, I am well used to it! In autumn the bastard stickybuds won't be coated in their thousands to the dog on a daily basis, and he won't overheat on long walks either so no having to get up at 5am to walk him. We can potter for miles round the lanes and canalside and pick blackberries (those rolls of poo bags come in handy!) and damsons at the moment.

I have already got my hedgerow gin in for Christmas (although this year's slow harvest is rubbish) and got my nice autumn/winter cushions and sofa covers ready to get out and make the living room somewhere to enjoy.

I do fear a cold winter and high bills though. I would love a log burner as I live rurally and can get logs but can't afford to get the other fire out and chimney lined etc.

AndStand · 30/08/2023 10:45

I love autumn, it's just the best. Cardigan weather. You know where you are with a cardi.

Gettingbysomehow · 30/08/2023 10:46

For me autumn is good food season, I love to make soup and bread and casseroles.
It's also hobby season as I'm too busy in spring and summer to do hobbies so I spend a lot of time in my hobby room making things. Its the best of times.
