Autumn

Even though the weather has generally been pretty pants this summer I sort of feel ready for autumn now. Do you set goals for yourself going into a new season? What’s on your to do list for this autumn?

OP posts:

It only took one post for hot chocolate to be mentioned, and three posts for cosiness…

Yes! Just need ‘snuggle’ now to complete the bingo card! 😄

Don't forget we've had "hunkering" and "crumble".

RampantIvy · 29/08/2023 22:58

No mention of fairy lights, candles, blankets or open fires yet @Clafoutie Grin

RegimentalSturgeon · 29/08/2023 23:05

Bloody hate sodding autumn. Then down into @#*%ing Christmas, New Year when one realises one has to do it all again, the miserable grind of January and then sodding February, the most revolting month of all.
I could make suggestions as to what to do with your hot chocolates, pumpkins, conkers and ‘jammies’ but they would be ‘not in the spirit’. As well as anatomically challenging.

Sorryiexist · 29/08/2023 23:05

Hmmm, interesting how my least controversial post ever on Mumsnet has so many people's backs up.
I'm not sure what people expect? It's not like we're going to be listing sunbathing is it? Yes, we could be whingey about the rain, fog and cold, but this is about preparing and therefore I read as positive.

I used to live in a tropical country. One thing I'd say for living in a country with seasons is it gives you a good sense of how time passes and dare I say it, a grounding with nature.

Also, yes my fairy lights and gradual light alarm clock is set up (great for sad). Oh and yes, it's cosy. Snuggly. Bingo.

Sulk mainly. I like summer and I feel cheated this year.

I am with you, the cosy autumn people can get in the bin. Luckily I a.m off to the Canaries in a few weeks and after that I will truly grieve summer.

Desiredeffect · 29/08/2023 23:10

I love Autumn and winter. I start a new job next week and just redecorated my living room and have new. Flooring. Coming. So looking forward to new seasons now

chillidoritto · 29/08/2023 23:10

@RegimentalSturgeon I couldn't have put it better myself

WTF is hunkering down as well?!?!!?

And the people whining about the summer, lord knows what they call temperatures of 18+!?!

The first week of Sept at least is meant to be nice. I hope all of the Autumn lovers MELT!!!!!!!!

chillidoritto · 29/08/2023 23:11

@Finefinefine hear hear!

I hope it didn’t seem I was mocking @Sorryiexist I love Autumn too, and enjoyed, and agreed with your post about all the nice things. I was only meaning to refer to one of the Mumsnet ‘staple’ phrases. I’m very sorry if this came across wrong.

RampantIvy · 29/08/2023 23:22

I think it is becasue we have had no summer to speak of @Sorryiexist, and we have already had what feels like two months of autumn.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/08/2023 23:24

I'm looking forwards to the thermometer reaching 22⁰C as soon as possible. And some sunshine.

I saw the moon a bit last night which was a total novelty as it's been cloudy for months.

Failing a last-chance Indian Summer, I'm looking forwards to getting abroad for some winter sun. That thought kept me going through our soggy Bristish holiday.

I can handle up to Halloween after we actually had a summer, but the cold, damp, and 6 months of continuous mud can piss off.

RampantIvy · 29/08/2023 23:25

Praying for a hot Indian summer.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 29/08/2023 23:25

We love Autumn but feel like we haven’t had a Summer either! I think Winter is going to feel long!!
Can’t wait to watch Gilmore Girls though, been counting down the days recently! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Bring on Autumn! 🍂 🎃

Upwiththelark76 · 29/08/2023 23:29

I can feel the sadness of losing summer already…. Autumn is lovely and a gentle transition toward Christmas ….. it’s the no mans land of January and February is struggle with . I think I need
to plant loads of daffodils and spring soon so when they appear I have a hope !

PrancerandDancer · 29/08/2023 21:02

I am so ready for Autumn it is my favourite time of year.

The colours, the nature, the nip in the air and the cosieness. Can not wait for 1st Sept on Friday :D

But the spiders tho. I love autumn but those bastards ruin it for me

RampantIvy · 29/08/2023 23:43

Why are people so obsessed with feeling claustrophobic "cosiness"?

bert3400 · 29/08/2023 23:46

I'm done with Sumner now, we've had a scorcher for months (Spain) and finally the relentless humidity has dropped. Still high 20's but it feels cooler in the evening AND all the tourists are leaving. Love September and October.

RampantIvy · 29/08/2023 23:47

I bet a Spanish autumn is lovely. Not like a grey and damp Pennine autumn.

Haha I do feel for the summer lovers this year, they have been cheated but it's the most comfortable summer I've had in years. Especially compared to last year. I'm pale and ginger, I literally do melt if I go out in the sun. It doesn't take a lot for me to be a hot mess.

Autumn is much more dignified for me 🤣

IsItThough · 29/08/2023 23:52

Go outside as much as possible
Wild autumnal walks
Tidy the garden
Hot yoga
Gigs and Theatre
Embrace all winter holidays

Soupmaker out again
Maybe, for the first time in 5 years - Advent Running

bert3400 · 29/08/2023 23:52

@RampantIvy it's lovely, still warm in the day but the evenings are chilly, get my jeans and a jumper on . Love the seasons

I'm in Malta for another week. After that unless we get a final summer respite I'll be dragged silently screaming into Autumn and winter. Then I'll be counting down to the Canaries in March.

ShutTheDoorBabe · 29/08/2023 23:57

I notice the change and l can feel the chill in the evening breeze now. Some of the leaves on our strawberry bush have gone red despite still flowering and growing fruit. The hazelnuts are growing bigger too.

I don't have a list of goals or anything - I don't general make plans and goals tbh - but I do look forward to starting back at work and earning money again.

I look forward to getting into bed and being cosy but I hate getting out of it again on the cold, dark mornings.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 30/08/2023 08:05

Weeping, double-dosing vit D and getting out my SAD lamp.

Deliaskis · 30/08/2023 08:30

I do feel like we've been cheated out of summer this year, and I'd rather just get on with autumn now. I think it's a bit about expectations management....summer you expect to have significant stretches of time when you don't have to think about a coat, or whether sandals will be ok, or heating, or whether you can plan a BBQ or attend an outdoor concert etc. So this summer has just been a constant juggling of compromise and 'making the best of a wet day'. Autumn is honest with us.... We know we will need warmer clothes, it just be wet, but it doesn't mess with our heads in the same way.

I run outdoor equestrian events twice a month on grass, and have been a member of the club and on the committee for 4 years. This is the first year that every single event members have been messaging asking 'will the event run?', 'what is the ground like?', 'is it safe to compete?', and of course 'can we have our money back?'.

Autumn I know I can plan for autumn weather and won't be disappointed. It's somehow easier.

I read a thing here last year about how it's quite common for introverts to like autumn and extroverts to prefer spring. I don't have the data or anything but it makes sense....autumn makes it easier to draw boundaries, our curtains are closed and we have privacy, whereas in spring everything opens up and we are supposed to be out and about. I don't know if it's true but it makes sense to me.
