Post office panic

BaaCode · 29/08/2023 18:53

Last year, my husband bought me an expensive laptop from Amazon.
A couple of days ago, it decided to die a death.
He contacted Amazon and they said to return it for a full refund, using the returns label they will send him.
Printed the label off, packaged up the parcel and went to the post office to send it back.
The post office scanned the label and told me that my husband would get either an email or a text as proof of postage. It's my husband's Amazon account.
Now, several hours later, he's had no email or text to say it's been posted, he's checked junk mail, his Amazon account and nothing.
Now I'm panicking.
Would I be unreasonable to go back to the post office tomorrow morning and demand proof of postage? Would they even be able to do this? It's a small quiet post office, rather than a large busy one. Although they don't know me, I use it often so I'm sure the assistant would remember me.
I'm panicking in case the parcel doesn't reach Amazon and I've no proof of postage.
Has anyone else had this situation?
Help please 🙏

I returned something to Amazon last week through the post office. I didn’t get a receipt or an email. Sent the parcel on Monday. Got the return completed message on Sunday.

I hate not having a paper receipt, In Next I always get one as a couple of times things have been returned to the wrong Directory account no. in the store and the only proof I have had is the paper receipt to claim my money back, obviously I didn't get the text or email receipt as it was the wrong account so I would never receive it. Paperless is not always good if there is an error

User174398521 · 29/08/2023 22:24

Amazon is quite slow updating returns tracking.

helpfulperson · 29/08/2023 22:26

I've found it depends what type of amazon return you do whether you get a paper receipt or not. I would give it a day or so. it should show up on his Amazon account by later on tomorrow.

Unicornio1990 · 29/08/2023 22:29

There is no proof of postage because it wasn't sent via Royal Mail, it will have been picked up by an Amazon driver and they don't do proof of postage. Some Amazon returns go through the Royal Mail (normally items from independent sellers), but Amazon itself has a paperless system. There's no point going to the Post Office about it, they have nothing to give you.

Don't panic! I returned something to Amazon recently and didn't get the email til the next day (although it was only a book so understand why you'd be a nit more worried with something expensive!)

FUPAgirl · 29/08/2023 22:39

I have returned stuff a few times to amazon and I have never been given a paper receipt. I did however receive an email and refund within hours. These were low value items though. Have faith, it will be ok!

BaaCode · 30/08/2023 04:12

Thank you all. I have just checked his Amazon account and nothing is showing there yet.
I don't think the post office man has / will steal it, no. I was more concerned about it going missing during transit.
I'll wait and see what today brings.
Thank you all again.

Amazon do not have a paperless system round here, they use Hermes or whatever it's called now or Royal Mail, both give me receipts upon collection or drop off and I can track the return in my Amazon account.

User174398521 · 30/08/2023 09:26

Hopefully it will update later, it probably just missed the collection and often a lot of things don't update until they are collected, was it a Royal Mail returns label that goes through the postal system.

User174398521 · 30/08/2023 09:28

Once you get something come up online I would screenshot it as an extra measure, in case anything disappears as it is an expensive item.

Okay, presumably it is different in different areas. However since the PO assistant told the OP she'd be getting an email/text, their PO must have an Amazon driver pick the items up.

IseeNarcPeople · 30/08/2023 10:55

You haven't said if you did check the Royal mail tracking?

Diamondsareforeverandever · 30/08/2023 19:20

@BaaCode any news from the post office?

BaaCode · 03/09/2023 03:15

This is where it's at, at the moment.
At least it's acknowledged that it's on its way back, so fingers crossed.

You haven't said if you did check the Royal mail tracking?

I tried, but it asked for the number on the receipt, which I don't have, so I couldn't proceed any further.
I couldn't find a tracking number on the return label either.

As I said before, it sounds like the return went directly through Amazon, not the Royal Mail. So if there is an issue with the return you need to contact Amazon. The Royal Mail and the Post Office can't tell you anything.

AllGoodPlans · 03/09/2023 19:39

This is how the Amazon returns work now if you return to the post office, I return a lot! I was worried at first too not getting a receipt but I’ve never had an issue. Generally the email is in within 24 hours

BaaCode · 09/09/2023 08:26

I've just checked again now and it's still showing the same status as I posted above.
Would it be worth me contacting them about it?
Surely they must have it by now?

Sometimes Amazon takes ages to update, it probably means it's there but they are checking it as it was faulty before refunding. A broken kitchen bin I sent back took about 2-3 weeks to refund. They will probably fix it and it will end up being resold in the warehouse for a bit cheaper, I don't think Amazon lose much money on things

BaaCode · 09/09/2023 08:49

@User174398521 Thank you, that's reassuring 😊

I've just had an email from Amazon. They've received the laptop and sent a refund. Yaaaay.
Thank you all for your reassuring posts that stopped me chewing my nails down to the elbow.
You're all fab. X
