Any surfing mums on here?

I'm on hol in Cornwall and the water is cold. Much colder than I expected. I bought some cheap wetsuits from trespass 3mm and 2.5. If I put them on the kids with a sunsafe swimsuit under is that OK? We're splashing not swimming as it's a bit rough and I'm worried about the big waves. Thank you all. Kids are 5 and 7

That sounds fine to me. They’re not going to be submerged for lengths of time. But. E guided by your kids - if they feel cold get them out and warm them up.
the water temp is actually okay at the No though! It’s always a few months behind the air temp so warm now and won’t drop to winter temps for quite a while…

At that age, you need to be IN the water with them. IN. If it’s choppy get in and have them within arms reach. Don’t be relying on boards or floats for safety.

I had a late swim at a local beach yesterday - about 5pm, and went in without a wet suit. Seemed to be a lot of primary age children doing the same. My memory (20 years ago!!) of my two going in at that age is that they were the last to feel the cold because they were so active. So any wetsuit you get should do the job.

We’re all swimming and paddle boarding not too far from you - kids are 11/13 - no wetsuits yet but we live by the sea so are well used to it… kids don’t wear anything warm in the water til the temp drops 15/16 degrees.

great! We watch the day trippers let their little kids go into the sea alone and wonder WTF is going through their heads. Particularly on choppy days. And don’t get me started on the ones who let their kids take inflatables into the sea… idiots.
