Women supporting women?

Aibu to find this saying so cringey?

I saw a female influencer supporting/promoting another female influence and lots of comments read “women supporting women 👏 👏”. It’s just so patronising. You never hear “men supporting men” in the workplace.

It feels like there’s this connotation that women are bitches and so to see them supporting another woman is rare and must be celebrated.

I don’t see the bitch connotation, we all know that whole thing is some patriarchal divide and conquer BS.

Sparklesocks · 28/08/2023 19:54

I don’t like that it’s used to shut down genuine criticism.

e.g. ‘She behaved really poorly when she did that bad thing’

’well whatever happened to women supporting women??’

Being a woman doesn’t mean we need to uncritically support everything other women do.

You don't /hear/ 'men support men' in this way, but you /see/ 'men supporting men (to the detriment of women)'. Old boys' club, anyone? Men's hostility to women gaining rights, men's hostility to women entering professions which men had previously enjoyed exclusive grasp of? Men writing laws to privilege men over women, men writing laws that have men rights and subordinated women?

We do need more female solidarity and women working together.

Men supporting men is the default and doesn't need mentioning Confused

Women supporting women is a good thing to recognise because men certainly don't support women! Unless they're titillating or very attractive 🤷

@Precipice
Exactly!
Everyday is men supporting men day.

I wonder why it is the case you never see men supporting men too. It's almost as though some sort of structural imbalance in which women often get the shitty end of the stick in terms of pay and progression exists. The reason you often find mostly men at the top of most organisations is probably because they worked harder than their female counterparts tbh. Tis a mystery really.

I never once said it needs to be mentioned.

It was a big thing in Ireland 15-20 years ago. But it was all a big multi-level marketing scam. Anyone that pointed it out was told, "No, it's Women Supporting Women, don't dare criticise it!" That's what I think of whenever I hear the phrase.
