Just curious as it is due to start at midnight tonight and could potentially cause a lot of chaos. I don't support it.

YANBU - I DON'T support ULEZ expansion

But it's irrelevant. My overall point is that you cannot say that just because a road is residential that is a good enough reason to stop cars driving down it.

GasPanic · 30/08/2023 10:07

It's a cash grab and as with all government policies these days seems to disproportionately affect the poor.

Once the infrastructure is in place and give it a couple of years and they will move up to charging Euro 5 petrol cars, so it will hit people in the future, basically anyone who likes or has to run an older vehicle.

There are better ways of improving air quality than this.

Yes and/or pay per mile. My car is compliant but I'm still very against ulez because it's the drip drip effect and eventually something will be put in place which will affect me.

They’ll be tracking you everywhere…

If people live on the South Circular they have chosen to live on a main traffic artery in London. Its going to be busy.

shibhon · 30/08/2023 10:15

YABU we need to get cars off the roads in cities. I have neighbours that drive half a mile to pick up a pint of milk.

And if people live on any road that isn't a private road or very rural, they need to accept that cars can drive down it.

Very odd to see so many people happy to lose their freedoms...even more bizarre is that if you question anything you're a conspiracy theorist nutter.

Yes to get to places that road serves, not as a convoluted route to avoid a bit of traffic on the main roads.

Who are you or anyone else to say people shouldn't go down certain roads? Do you not care about freedom? It's not North korea...we don't need papers to leave our zone

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/08/2023 10:40

@GasPanic Coe on thne - what are those better ways - given that people can easily avoid this charge by upgrading their car to a cleaner one? If the financial hit won't make them get a cleaner car - what will?

ThinWomansBrain · 30/08/2023 10:44

yes - I live inside the congestion charge and original ULEZ area, both made a huge difference to air quality. (as did no traffic with COVID, but not promoting that as an idea).
About a year before ULEZ was introduced I changed my car - the original one was two or three years inside the limit.

Well, of course you would, you'd hardly be paying anything. But it's not just about you, is it? A decent society shouldn't want to see anyone struggle.

If someone wants to buy a 1.5t SUV, that's on them and they'll have to pay for its impact. It's not bicycles that cause potholes.

North Korea? Papers?

Do you drive the wrong way down one way streets to asset your freedom? Through bus lanes? Park your car on red routes.

I don’t drive down residential streets to avoid traffic on main roads because it’s considerate to the people living on those roads. You carry on driving every which way to assert your freedom.

You would describe the Westway as residential? The dual carriageway parts of the A406? Oxford Street? The Embankment?

Is one flat on a road enough to make it residential?

Doesn't Oxford Street already have traffic restrictions banning private cars at certain times?

Comedycook · 30/08/2023 11:03

That's a really odd way to behave.

And why not? Certainly in Central London I'd be pedestrianising large swathes anyway. Public transport would be a lot better if buses weren't stuck in traffic.

You have spectacularly missed the point! Motorists are already paying for the roads, cyclists are not. The end.

For someone who claims not to be a conspiracy theorist, you're sounding a lot like a right-wing American.

Roads are currently paid through general taxation, which means that I'm paying just as much as you.

If you are against cars being able to drive down roads with residential property you'd basically end up banning cars altogether. But regardless...very few private cars drive in central London anymore. It's mainly taxis and vans. Pedestrianising it totally is a silly idea. What happens when restaurants and shops need deliveries? When they and offices need tradesman?

Much of the local town centre is pedestrianised. Deliveries happen early in the morning or at night.

No it isn’t.

Do you leave the area in which you live or your house. Your experience is very narrow.

Well I'm neither. But if questioning politicians and their motives makes me a conspiracy theorist then fine.

Obviously and like most people I drive the quickest route to where I need to go. It's never occurred to me that driving on a residential road is inconsiderate....just as I don't think people who drive down the road I live on are being inconsiderate to me.
