Help- I have bad breath

I brush my teeth exactly as recommended, floss, use mouthwash etc. I was at the dentist recently and my oral health is fine

but over the last few weeks I’ve had a problem with my mouth/breath. When I wake up either in the morning or during the night for the toilet, I have the most disgusting taste in my mouth. It’s actually foul and sort of bitter/sour and it gives me horrendously bad breath. I also get a fuzzy gunky layer over my teeth and tongue and my entire mouth is just foul.

does anyone know what causes this? It’s really unpleasant and I’ve been back to the dentist for a private check up and x rays and there’s no infections etc so I don’t know why this is suddenly happening!

Could it be tonsil stones? The only way I have found to dislodge them is using a pipette to shoot a jet of water at them.

Is your general health ok? No thyroid issues, diabetes, anaemia etc? Do you get acid reflux?

Might be tonsiloliths. I get these from time to time and when I get them out- they absolutely stink!

Do you use a tongue cleaner op?

Could be a lingering throat infection or an imbalance of bacteria or a fungal thing or something? Or a sinus problem causing post-nasal drip? Or tonsil stones? Even silent reflux can cause a nasty taste in your mouth or a manky throat.

If I were you I’d go to your GP and explain that any dental cause has been ruled out.

Getting up in the night with sour taste in mouth is usually the result of GERD or some kind of reflux.
Reflux can be "silent" in that you don't necessarily have to feel heartburn or pain for it to be an issue.
If it continues I would ask doc, but bad taste and halitosis can be signs of a deeper digestive issue like oesophageal reflux.

Get checked for acid reflux.

IDriveMySupernova · 28/08/2023 12:38

Could be thrush, tonsil stones, post-nasal drip, acid reflux, gingivitis…

Take some probiotics, tongue brush, new toothbrush, test for helibactor you can buy tests online.

Could be a cavity. They can cause bad breath and might not be visible either
