At least you know where your cat is and you can see that he is safe

NopeNopeNoper · 28/08/2023 11:03

madeinmanc · 28/08/2023 10:50

@Catsos They don't need to change the locks! They can just open the door, retrieve the cat themselves (which you have proven is yours by showing photos), then lock it again.

Exactly…

placemats · 28/08/2023 11:03

How is there a 90 degree bend? How do you know this?

Just unscrew the cat flap!

NopeNopeNoper · 28/08/2023 11:03

A right angle bend in the cat flap? Gosh.

CoffeeLover90 · 28/08/2023 11:03

@Catsos please post a photo of the cat flap as soon as you can, maybe someone can give ideas on how to open it. Post it on a local Facebook page or a neighbour WhatsApp, whatever, in case anyone local has ideas or maybe could come and help.
Are there any local cat rescues that might be able to help or give advice?
If all else fails, I'd smash the window. I know not everyone would agree. Hopefully the owners are animal lovers who will understand how desperate you were but you'd obviously still have to cover the cost of the damage.

MayThe4th · 28/08/2023 11:04

Zanatdy · 28/08/2023 10:59

I’d smash the window, pay for damage, sure they’d understand as risk is damage to their house and no-one wants a dead cat on their hands. They will need to lock the cat flap until they are there permanently

ffs they’re not going to have a dead cat on their hands.

If a cat is stuck in a house it will survive for days, possibly even a week, and that cat looks particularly chilled, in fact I’d say it’s his own house he’s been photographed in.

Honestly the hysteria over this is ridiculous. Just leave the bloody thing there and it’ll get out tomorrow.

XelaM · 28/08/2023 11:06

HootyMcBooby76 · 28/08/2023 11:01

OP.

When do you DEFINITELY know someone will be back? (Builders/estate agent/owner)?
If it is only another day or two you (and the cat) are going to be fine.
He will not die in the next couple of days, despite a lot of dramatization and alarmist posts on these threads.
As a veterinary nurse I have seen MANY many cats who were locked in garages and sheds for over two weeks and were fine. Cats are resourceful animals (when they have to be) and can survive from tiny amounts of condensation and eating god awful things.

Please also ignore the alarmist posts about your cat keeling over from liver failure due to not eating. Hepatic lipidosis (when the fat is mobilised after prolonged periods of anorexia and is stored in the liver) doesn't generally happen in a couple of days in normal healthy cats, and is almost exclusively seen in cats who are already obese and have excess fat and become ill through some other means leading to anorexia). I have NEVER seen a hepatic lipidosis case from a cat who was locked away for a few days.
It's just not going to happen.
You still have a good few days buffer time until someone arrives, after that, the RSPCA will have to take action.

Voice of reason. Don't break their windows and wait for the workmen to let the cat out tomorrow.

PrinceHaz · 28/08/2023 11:06

Unscrew cat flap
fire service

the 2 things u haven’t tried yet.

Holidaystress11 · 28/08/2023 11:06

As you have the names from the land registry search can you look for them on SM. I don't mean put out a post. Actually search for them and then message them.

DeanElderberry · 28/08/2023 11:06

Breaking the window and paying for the repair is probably the best option - you'll have to board it up until someone can get in to do the full job, and also put something in front of the cat flap to prevent another animal getting in.

This is all horrid, for you, horrid for the cat, horrid for the new owners (new house all cattified and broken, eek). I hope it's resolved very soon.

NopeNopeNoper · 28/08/2023 11:03

A right angle bend in the cat flap? Gosh.

It’s not possible.

If a person couldn’t put their hand in there then a cat wouldn’t be able to get through it.

I think it was the ham that tipped this from 'oh my, poor cat' to Confused

If this is genuine, I really hope that you get sorted today OP.

I don’t understand what’s so bad about poking ham slices through a vent? I was worried about my cat not eating as several posters have said cats can go into some kind of liver shock & die if they don’t eat for 48 hours. Maybe they were trolling me, I don’t know. Some people are saying some really unhelp things.
I know it’s easy to be rational when you’re not going through it but I am stressed and desperate.

Anyway, the land registry lead has gone cold. Site down for maintenance today, what are the chances.

To those who are genuinely trying to help and not trolling me, can I ask?;

Shall I break a window with the bird bath or leave it until Tuesday when a builder is at least likely to turn up but it will be approaching 72 hours of my cat inside.

Those of you who want to believe this post is somehow a sham why don’t you go and do a bit of gardening or something else that you like doing.

Ahh…..but there’s the thing…….you enjoy this don’t you, you enjoy being snarky and critical and ‘clever’. You probably hang around just waiting to spot a made up story, then to be sarcastic about the poster. Why? If you really think this is made up just go away, no one, least of all the OP needs your view.

if it’s made up well then we’ve been ‘had’ or whatever word in your mind fits.
I don’t care.

I’m guessing the flap is like this for those wondering….

LOCKSMITH - I’m not sure what dodgy locksmiths you have in your area, but the two I have rung were absolutely adamant they wouldn’t change locks and then leave me basically in charge of the new keys to somebody else’s house. I guess it’s not worth their reputation

Oh so you've phoned some then because yesterday you hadn't? There was a PP on here yesterday whose DH is a locksmith and he said he and plenty of others would help.

She said she called them this morning!

There's nothing in the house. You are a neighbour. It's not as if you're going to move in. Plus your neighbours are looking out the window all the time.

You're right it does look chilled, it should look more like this:

NopeNopeNoper · 28/08/2023 11:03

Exactly…

Depends on the lock. It can't be done with the locks on my house

Wrongsideofpennines · 28/08/2023 11:08

Have you tried the neighbours? If the previous owner was elderly they may well have a key. Our neighbours both handed us keys back when we first moved in because they had them for the previous owners who died.
Our 'elderly' neighbours are also very resourceful. All in their 80s but have let us borrow tools and often handy with DIY things so may have a suggestion of how to get the catflap off.

Can you unscrew your shower hose, feed it through the flap, then ram it to push open the other end? Once slightly ajar, hopefully he can paw it fully open.

LucyAnnTrent · 28/08/2023 11:10

Haven't read all 47 pages Wink but if you look through the letter box, does it look as if your cat would be able to get to the front door? If so, and if's a hard floor, could you pour a small amount of water through (using a wine bottle) so your cat ha a puddle to drink from? You could put some cat biscuits through the letter box too.

But really, I'd be inclined to break a small window, quickly put a towel down over the broken glass, and entice your cat out that way. As long as you pay for the damage, your new neighbour would probably rather that than the smell of two day worth of cat wee/poo.

mydogisthebest · 28/08/2023 11:10

madeinmanc · 28/08/2023 11:00

Yeah, a locksmith would have known it wasn't about changing the locks but just them getting in to get the cat, so I don't think one has been spoken with.

I would not expect a locksmith to just agree to change the locks on a house to get a cat without the agreement of the owners.

FineganFineagain · 28/08/2023 11:10

Fire brigade? Someone on the other thread said they rescued her cat in similar circumstances.
