Yeah, don’t throw the bird bath.

What have you tried, with the cat flap?

VeloVixen · 28/08/2023 10:55

It would be impossible for there to be a 90degree bend in a cat flap tunnel in a wall 2 bricks thick.

SoCentralRain · 28/08/2023 10:56

CAT FLAP BEND - There is a 90 degree bend in it!! It’s tunnelled through a brick wall. It’s honestly easier said than done please believe me.

Can you take a photo? I can't quite picture it.

Alargeoneplease89 · 28/08/2023 10:56

Really sorry OP, you are going to get constant stream of idiots on a post that's become so popular. Please take 5 minutes to go offline- get a brew (because that solves everything in England), you must be so stressed.

They could put a camera on a selfie stick down the tunnel to photo the flap after the bend. That way someone could maybe identify the flap type and tell them how to open it.

Isheabastard · 28/08/2023 10:57

I’m sure you are inundated with suggestions. Sorry if this has already been suggested.

Have you tried tracking down anyone who works for the estate agent on social media. Perhaps an email or text today (even though it’s A Bank Holiday), may reach someone sympathetic enough to reply today.

Then perhaps you can get authority from the owners to employ an emergency locksmith to get in and rescue your cat.

You sound like a lovely cat owner and this is not the sort of thing you ever expect to happen.

PickledPurplePickle · 28/08/2023 10:57

I can't imagine how stressed you are

However, realistically the cat will be OK until tomorrow. He is sitting calmly at the window looking at you, he's not clawing at the window trying to get out

Tomorrow there will be people you can contact and he will get out

Don't damage the neighbours property

orangegato · 28/08/2023 10:58

Download their title deeds to find their names.

It’s quite stressful reading the vastly differing opinions. Some people think I’m doing too much even by going into the back garden & others think i’m not doing enough.
I have tried;

POLICE - they have said they don’t have authority to break in & told me to try enticing him out 🙄 (he is stuck, not lacking enticement)

RSPCA- they said not unless in immediate danger & to see if owners turn up today

ESTATE AGENTS - Closed as bank holiday. Tried emergency lettings department and the girl who answered laughed pretty much and said there’s nothing she can do as I would need to speak to sales team. I think she just can’t be arsed to help on the Bank holiday to be honest.

CAT FLAP BEND - There is a 90 degree bend in it!! It’s tunnelled through a brick wall. It’s honestly easier said than done please believe me.

FACEBOOK POST- The new neighbours are “down from London” and already told me they don’t know nobody from here

BUILDERS - there are contact details from a renovation sign outside - but they’re not answering - guess as it is bank holiday - I’ve left multiple messages

LOCKSMITH - I’m not sure what dodgy locksmiths you have in your area, but the two I have rung were absolutely adamant they wouldn’t change locks and then leave me basically in charge of the new keys to somebody else’s house. I guess it’s not worth their reputation.

Potential solutions;

LAND REGISTRY SEARCH - Some kind person who works doing land registry searches has contacted me via messages so this may be a lead on the name of the owners. FINGERS CROSSED

Last resort…

BIRD BATH - There is a heavy looking new bird bath (not installed yet) in the garden. I’m so stressed out I’m considering just lobbing it through the window. Getting my cat, apologising, paying for damages and maybe just bloody moving house.

I genuinely have tears running down my cheeks writing this as I feel so desperate & bloody mortified. Most of the neighbours are elderly and are nonstop curtain twitching me from their windows

Maybe try the fire department as a poster suggested 🤞🏻

TokyoSushi · 28/08/2023 10:58

I think it was the ham that tipped this from 'oh my, poor cat' to Confused

If this is genuine, I really hope that you get sorted today OP.

Would getting a bendy tool work? A trip to the local DIY store?

VeloVixen · 28/08/2023 10:59

The tunnel is only going to be 25cm long max. 🤷‍♀️

Zanatdy · 28/08/2023 10:59

I’d smash the window, pay for damage, sure they’d understand as risk is damage to their house and no-one wants a dead cat on their hands. They will need to lock the cat flap until they are there permanently

CovidCrow · 28/08/2023 10:59

Oh so you've phoned some then because yesterday you hadn't? There was a PP on here yesterday whose DH is a locksmith and he said he and plenty of others would help.

There sure are a constant stream of idiots. 😁

LegArmpits · 28/08/2023 11:00

Op - our cat got locked in a neighbour's house for nine days with no ill effect. I know it's not ideal but your cat will likely be ok.

I really feel for you though. The pic of your cat made me proper lol. What a dickhead. I hope you sort things out.

Also - there's some really unhinged people on here! 🤣

Totallyterrific · 28/08/2023 11:00

Catsos, I hope your cat will remember forever the effort you've been too to rescue him. A heroine for cats. Hoping you can get him out today.

ThePoetsWife · 28/08/2023 11:00

Something like a flexible thick plumbing pipe

Saurus72 · 28/08/2023 11:00

So sorry to hear of your distress. Do you think your cat might be able to drink from the toilet(s)?

Our cat was terrorised by a local bullying b*stard of a cat and spent 3 days on a neighbour’s roof without food/water (unbeknownst to me btw). I was sick with worry, had no idea where he’d gone and only finally tea him down after posting on Facebook. All that is to say he was a bit skinnier when he came back but all absolutely fine. He’ll be ok til tomorrow.

madeinmanc · 28/08/2023 11:00

Yeah, a locksmith would have known it wasn't about changing the locks but just them getting in to get the cat, so I don't think one has been spoken with.

SoCentralRain · 28/08/2023 11:01

So OP, what did the fire brigade say?

HootyMcBooby76 · 28/08/2023 11:01

OP.

When do you DEFINITELY know someone will be back? (Builders/estate agent/owner)?
If it is only another day or two you (and the cat) are going to be fine.
He will not die in the next couple of days, despite a lot of dramatization and alarmist posts on these threads.
As a veterinary nurse I have seen MANY many cats who were locked in garages and sheds for over two weeks and were fine. Cats are resourceful animals (when they have to be) and can survive from tiny amounts of condensation and eating god awful things.

Please also ignore the alarmist posts about your cat keeling over from liver failure due to not eating. Hepatic lipidosis (when the fat is mobilised after prolonged periods of anorexia and is stored in the liver) doesn't generally happen in a couple of days in normal healthy cats, and is almost exclusively seen in cats who are already obese and have excess fat and become ill through some other means leading to anorexia). I have NEVER seen a hepatic lipidosis case from a cat who was locked away for a few days.
It's just not going to happen.
You still have a good few days buffer time until someone arrives, after that, the RSPCA will have to take action.

hby9628 · 28/08/2023 11:02

I think I would either

  1. Post on our local fb page to contact the estate agent. Our fb page is full of very active 'helpful' local people so this would work for our area. You've got nothing to lose.
  2. Go down to unhelpful lettings girl at the estate agent. I can't believe she won't have contact details for somebody. Maybe seeing you in person will motivate her to be useful
  3. Contact the local fire brigade if the rspca won't help.

Your cat looks lovely. Hope you get him out soon.
