@sashh she seems to have perfect hearing in both ears, I don’t know whether her blue eyed siblings are OK. I knew there was a possibility of deafness on the blue eyed side as I know there is a link between blue eyes and deafness.

Good luck this morning OP with your neighbours.
Do Let us know how it goes. As someone else said let’s hope they are people who care about other people and animals and have a sense of humour. They might even be able to enjoy being Mumsnet famous!

My brother moved to the US and married. His wife had two indoor cats. After a couple of years they had the cats declawed. I think the excuse was new carpets or some such furniture issue. It’s a barbaric practice and I never forgave him for his utter selfishness and disregard for the cats welfare. Never mind the torture of the pain it must have caused them and immense danger if they ever got outside. Thank God it’s illegal here.
As I write that I look across the room and see my scratched sofa. It’s a sofa, a thing. It reminds me of my beautiful cat who died some years ago 18yrs old. I miss her still, I won’t miss the sofa.

OMG coming back to the thread for the first time since yesterday morning. Cannot believe the crabsticks are still there, now with added ham. WTAF.

Yujismum · 29/08/2023 09:12

nonheme · Today 09:06. Nobody wants your animals in their home.

Factually not true.

wowthatsharsh · 29/08/2023 09:29

I'm sorry but I don't like cats as I'm severely allergic.

If I came home and found there was smelly food in my house, I wouldn't be happy.

Couldn't you have just put dried food in?

For all we know the builder requested permission from the owners prior to accessing the property, I would imagine that is best practice.

Thing is no reasonable person is going to say no to removing a trapped cat from an empty property precisely because have more opportunities to do damage the longer they remain trapped and stressed.

Sometimes in life other people are going to inconvenience you by their existence.

Life is happier if you make peace with that and seek to make those interactions as smooth as possible

Just 17 posts left on this thread, I do hope @Catsos updates soon, I want to know the neighbour’s reaction!

lto2019 · 29/08/2023 11:04

I'm so glad he is home safe and sound. The crab sticks part is unintentionally hilarious. Re the neighbours - I hope they are understanding. I would include the address of this thread on any note you post so they can see everything you have done!

Scaryghost · 29/08/2023 11:33

Looking to see if there’s an update! Hope OP posts back

I agree it's the house owners responsibility to secure their property. I'd see it as their fault but offer to pay damage.

I am very glad that the cat is safe and well. But I don't see how it is the owners fault. The cat broke the cat flap. OP said he has broken cat flaps before to get into houses. I don't see how the neighbours could secure their house against that.
It's like saying a house owner is at fault because a burglar got into the house by breaking a window

Sorry, this may have already been answered - did the cat definitely get in through the cat flap, or did he get in when the builder/owners may have left a door open ? I suppose we'll never know...

@Catsos I'm afraid after reading all what you have done, some on MN might find it quite and funny.

But to be completely honest even as a cat owner, If it was my home you have done this too. The first thing I would be doing tomorrow is taking photos and going straight to the police and my solicitor.

You sound horrendous, trespass, damage and putting stuff in the house and not controlling your pet, I would be livid.

All the people thinking its funny i doubt honestly they would if was their new home.

As for the crab sticks and ham, I have no words!

Edited

What exactly would you prefer the OP to have done, once the cat was locked inside the house?

Left the cat to starve?

It's entirely possible the cat was trapped accidentally by builders or by a cat flap set to permit entry but not exit.

Its pretty normal behaviour that cats will investigate new places, for example when the territory holding cat leaves or a property is empty - this isn't outrageous behaviour from cats. It is also not something the OP has done on purpose.

Can't wait to hear what you think the OP should have done, with the knowledge she had available to her at the time.

I cannot believe this.

Breaking and entering is a crime. I honestly can't believe this entire thread - two threads! People encouraging this stuff.

I'm flabbergasted. I truly cannot believe it.

What makes people think this is ok?

CherryCokeFanatic · 28/08/2023 21:52

Was the cat really at risk here? Surely can survive more than a few days without eating. Water would be my main concern but perhaps would have been able to get into a toilet or something if desperate

Try leaving a pet without guaranteed access to food and water for 3 days and see what the RSPCA or a court says about it... I don't think the response would be favourable!

'Might' have had access to water is not good enough - for all the OP knew, the bathroom was locked or even water turned off and plumbing drained, or for some cats, simply the lid being down would be enough.

Do you really not understand that living creatures are more important than laws?

A cat left for days would do more damage and most people would prefer to have the animal removed as quickly as possible.

It's a values and logic test. If you don't understand it, then you fail.

What makes people think leaving a cat to suffer and die is ok? What’s wrong with you? Animal neglect and abuse are crimes as well. I can’t believe someone would prioritise an easily-replaceable window or a door lock over the life of a beloved pet.

Cats are protected from harm by law, and owners have a duty to meet their needs. If these needs aren't being met, then by law this could be seen as cruelty and neglect. The crime carries up to 5 years imprisonment and unlimited fine. Whereas trespass carries around 6 months imprisonment so even the law would prioritise the life of an animal.

What makes people think this is okay- um the fact that they don’t want to see a cat starve to death Whether you own a cat or not, if you see another cat suffering from cruelty and neglect you should take steps to help the cat in need.

All the people that moan about what the OP did can’t not give one reasonable option to what else OP could have done that wouldn’t further harm the cat?

im flabbergasted that you can’t comprehend the life on an animal is more important then a broken glass (which was never broken in the end)

wowthatsharsh · 29/08/2023 15:44

I'd have phoned the RSPCA and asked them to get the cat out

You think having your house broken into is just a matter of broken glass?

That is so reductionist and unrealistic. What a silly thing to say, to put it kindly.

Have you ever had your house broken into? People have mental health problems after those kind of experiences. People feel unsafe and scared. People move home because of this kind of thing.

Dear Lord there is some myopic thinking going on here.

This is their home. It is more than just windows OP could be breaking.
