@Catsos I've been following this thread and thrilled your beautiful cat is back. If it was me as new owner I would be the one apologising for causing all the worry (truly). I can totally understand how panicked you were and I know I would have been looking up how to smash double glazing or break a door down.

I would give puss a cuddle and then ground him!

Cucucucu · 28/08/2023 18:41

Oh wow I just saw your update , so happy your cat is out . I truly hope you have sympathetic neighbours, if this was us I would be more than happy with you just paying the cleaning of a rug . The idiots trolling you , they are just awful people who clearly don’t understand how awful is to see a pet distressed . A few years ago I had a distressed cat stuck in the wall between my neighbours and my house ( fell through the attic ) and we needed dip with a massive hole in a wall . The neighbour had her dad fix it after , nit completou perfect but I would never have a bad relationship towards a neighbour due to it and I’m a animal lover so no way I would leave that cat dying, even if the wall was not fixed .

Autieangel · 28/08/2023 18:42

Brilliant news op. Please let us know how neighbours react 🙏🏻 and great thread 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

OMG she fucking did.

She thinks it will be ok to do again.

The builders let her in. Of course they could have gone in and picked up the cat themselves but obviously they didn't think it was an issue either.

Because they're not drama queens.

WhatapityWapiti · 28/08/2023 18:44

So, when you say “broken catflap” is part of the damage, do you mean that your cat broke it (and that’s why he couldn’t get out) or that you broke the outside part when trying to rescue him? Because I’m thinking that the cat flap was surely broken in the first place, which is why he was able to get in without a chip and then was unable to get out. So not his/your fault?

PMSL though at the ham and crab sticks still being in there.

MumGMT · 28/08/2023 18:19

The same way we control dogs. We keep them indoors even if they want to be outdoor dogs 🤔

I'm not saying that people have to do it, I just find the question so disingenuous 😂I even remember this during the early stages of the pandemic when everyone was being extra cautious and trying their best, and there was worry about covid possibly being spread by pets and people asking how it would be possible to keep a cat indoors 😂eh close the doors, windows and block the cat flat if you have one.

Utter bollocks!! A cat used to being outdoors could become very unhappy to be shut in the house. I say that as someone whose cats are indoors, having adapted brilliantly after straying in the street.

A cat is totally different to a dog ffs!

@Catsos I'm afraid after reading all what you have done, some on MN might find it quite and funny.

But to be completely honest even as a cat owner, If it was my home you have done this too. The first thing I would be doing tomorrow is taking photos and going straight to the police and my solicitor.

You sound horrendous, trespass, damage and putting stuff in the house and not controlling your pet, I would be livid.

All the people thinking its funny i doubt honestly they would if was their new home.

As for the crab sticks and ham, I have no words!

Edited

You would be happy cleaning up dead cat I guess?

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 28/08/2023 18:45

@Abblesnapps please ignore the facetious replies to your question. Mumsnet is better than their comments might make you think.

If you search for "sleep" or just "chat" there's the option to start your own thread where hopefully you'll get some decent advice rather than pisstaking.

Good luck!

Posters who are critical of OP automatically being labelled cat haters is ridiculous. It is possible to like cats but also not want your new home broken into or trashed by someone else’s pet

Well then ensure they can't get access. Simple!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 28/08/2023 18:46

And either you or they ( or both) will have insurance which will cover the cost of any damage anyway.

Probably with a hefty excess, though - and likely leading directly to a big increase next year.

There's lots of accusations of trolling on this thread when it's mainly challenging the OP. That's not what trolling is.

Posters who are critical of OP automatically being labelled cat haters is ridiculous. It is possible to like cats but also not want your new home broken into or trashed by someone else’s pet

100% Yes to both of these. Branding somebody who calmly disagrees with you a troll or a hater is the (not very) 'adult' equivalent of a toddler calling you a great big smelly poo-poo head when you tell them that they've already had enough treats for today.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 28/08/2023 18:47

OP leave a note on the door

" Please call Catsos at no 3 on xxxxxxxxxxx. My cat got into your house at the weekend but your kind builder, Mr Lovely Irishman, came over to get him out."

If you see them or the builder arriving go over and explain/remove food iitems/ offer to clean rug professionally and repair other damage.

They seem to have been friendly when you have chatted before. Show them this thread and they will realise how you were trying every avenue and that there are dafter people around (who would make much worse neighbours).

I'm sure your lovely cat will be fine - last time we moved house our obstinate cat refused to use a litter tray for almost 3 days! And we once seriously considered breaking into a neighbour's (unheated) conservatory, in the middle of winter, to 'rescue ' a hamster.

andbreathenormally · 28/08/2023 18:50

Welcome home, beautiful boy.
We had a similar drama a month or so ago in Portugal when one of the feral cats we care for got into the huge mostly unoccupied house next door, and we eventually, (well over a week later, we thought she had been a road casualty) saw and heard her through a window. The Portuguese police didn’t pussyfoot around, three attended, one jumped down a ten foot wall from our terrace, opened a louvre window, she shot out like a bat out of hell, he somehow ascended the wall again, job done. She went to ground for a couple of hours, reappeared before supper time, screaming miaows of panic, looking hollow from starvation, but she must have been drinking from a loo or something, or she would have died. She took a week to fatten up, and is very clingy now, but physically well.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 28/08/2023 18:51

You might find the rug isn't as expensive as you fear, as anyone doing house renovations with builders in and out, dust getting everywhere ect is unlikely to have put their antique persian heirloom down.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 28/08/2023 18:54

I worked in insurance for over 20 years so am perfectly aware of that. It may be cheaper to get quotes and just pay direct. The OP/neighbours have a choice.

Really ?

Most solicitors I'm met tend to quote their hourly fee and then suggest potential courses of action and their likelyhood of succeeding.

Eh the same could apply to a dog who was used to be outdoors (by their own choice).

When I was a kid most dogs would go out when it suited them and come home when it suited them, but then people stopped allowing dogs to do that......so even if it's difficult for existing outdoor cats/dogs then that doesn't apply to new ones.

Yet people will keep getting kittens and keep letting them out, even though others will get kittens from the same litter and keep them as indoor cats!

hartof · 28/08/2023 18:54

I'm really glad he's out OP. Next time you want to post about the cat, do it in Litter Tray everyone is much more understand and won't accuse you of being a weirdo!

I fully relate to you, I am the mad cat lady on my street my cat got stuck in a neighbours van all day and I was crying my eyes out when they found him.

Sure you are and its a good thing I'm friends with my solicitor isn't it. Also as you should already know its their job to do what I pay them for.

My home is private and not open to the likes of the OP and also the builder also has no rights to allow strangers in a private property, cat or no cat.

I’m glad he’s safe, for his sake.

Now are you going to be a responsible pet owner and keep him safe in future by cat proofing your garden?

Doubtful.

No I’m not keeping him in. Cats have a right to roam in the UK, and roam he shall! He’d be miserable indoors, he might even end up as miserable as you!

He lives his life on the veg and will continue to do so 😁

To break into my new neighbours house *THREAD 2*

Then cat-proof the garden or why have a cat as a pet? I genuinely don't understand the point in getting a pet and then allowing it to roam the streets, other people's gardens/homes and quite often get run over. What's the point in this kind of pet-ownership?
