To break into new neighbours house *serious question, NOT trolling*

Name change as I don’t want neighbours to recognise me😭

I have a cat who has a bit of a reputation on our street for forcing his way into neighbours homes by breaking open their cat-flaps to steal their pets food. He’s been doing it for years, not much I can do about it besides keeping him in which he would hate. Anyway….

Here is the problem..

This afternoon I realised I hadn’t seen him for nearly 24 hours (very unusual for him). I went out into the street to look for him when I spotted the bloody buggar in the window of the house two doors down!!!
This house was recently bought by a couple who are living elsewhere while they are renovating it. I have briefly spoken to this couple once, and they mentioned they have cats, so I assumed they have already had a cat-flap installed which he has broken into.

I was really confused why he hadn’t come back out, so I peered through their front window and spotted the catflap which he must have entered through. It’s one of those “smart” catflap brands which only opens if the cat has the right microchip. So he’s managed to get in, but now he can’t get out as his microchip isn’t unlocking it. I can see his muddy scratch marks on their newly painted wall besides the catflap, so he’s obviously been trying to get back out 😩😩

So here’s the even bigger problem…

As i’ve said, the couple who own the house are living elsewhere while renovating it. So there is nobody here to let him back out. I usually see them visit the house every week or so but I don’t know when they will be here next and he has already been inside for around 24 hours.

I’ve already spoken to all of the neighbours and nobody has contact details for them. I did think I could contact the estate agents who their house was on the market with to try and get their contact details but as it is the bank holiday they won’t be open until Tuesday - which means he will have been trapped for 72 hours inside their house.

What should I do?! Do I try and break in, get my cat and then secure the property as best I can and explain what happened when they are next here? That sounds like a really bad start to a relationship with them but then my cats trapped inside, presumably without water?!

Nice bit of tuna to go with them and he's got himself the start of a nice tuna nicoise there 😀

Crabstick nicoise, surely?

do not break in. ask other neighbours if they have the new neighbours number? call RSPCA for advice? don't break in. maybe leave your cat food and water in the meantime? not sure if you can still get your hand through the flap?

This thread is hilarious, the OP has literally done all of those things 😂

Even if for some reason you can't use read op's posts you must be able to see that the tread has over 550 posts, what do you think posters have been suggesting all evening 😂😂

Once you've finished posting pork and seafood through through the windows and vents, I'd push a bunch of flowers through the letterbox then pour in a bottle of wine. Claim you were just dropping off a welcome hamper.

A deconstructed welcome hamper, very posh. 😂

I'd break in with minimal damage and profusely apologise and pay extra for damage. Easier to get forgiveness than permission!

I would then make sure I secured my garden to prevent it happening again.

PuzzledObserver · 27/08/2023 22:00

We had to get a locksmith to let us into our own house when the tenant did a flit after failing to pay the rent for 6 months. We had to prove our identity. I feel hard done by now, given all the reports of people who’ve had locksmiths let them in, no questions asked.

JANEY205 · 27/08/2023 22:00

For those saying poor indoor cats, do you actually know any? I know a lot and they are all very happy! None have been declawed so no idea why a pp brought that up. I’d rather have an indoor cat than have my cat run over tbh. My dogs are quite happy living inside a house and not roaming free too. Cats aren’t a pet I would ever own tho so don’t worry, no indoor cats here! It’s done here due to predators that would eat them within a day and because people don’t want strangers animals roaming around their land, dogs are held to that same standard. I also know indoor cats in the UK so it’s not like it doesn’t happen there.

Op, is there a chimney? Maybe you could throw some hard boiled eggs down there.

Why? No cat I know has ever eaten an egg, regardless of its boiled status!

Guestetiquette · 27/08/2023 22:02

OP, try emailing the estate agent. Some work from home. I had to get in touch about a house I used to rent and sent an email late at at night. They emailed straight back. With remote and flexible working you never know. Worth a try.

Sundaybaby · 27/08/2023 22:02

Did this couple believe they’d bought the house with vacant possession?
😁
What is this cat’s name? He’s becoming a legend!

Poppyseed14 · 27/08/2023 22:02

I'm in the UK and I've got 2 indoor cats who are both very happy. We have a small cat proofed garden that they can enjoy, they just can't climb out of it. Declawing isn't legal here and rightly so.

dawngreen · 27/08/2023 21:37

And spreading info that they are not at home will encourage burglars.

I mean, the house is empty so I think it would be a disappointing break in for burglars... However, if they break in the cat can get out, so this sounds like a great plan tbh...

Hi! They are closed - as it is bank holiday their website says not open until Tuesday morning. On Tuesday it will be heading towards the 72 hours mark.

They might have an emergency contact number on their answering machine. I know ours did before.

GlitteryFluff · 27/08/2023 22:04

Can you fit kitchen tongs through the gap in the window? If your cat can't even access the room with the crab sticks, I feel like you really should try to retrieve them 🤣

madeinmanc · 27/08/2023 22:04

The problem is we've lost sight of what a normal portion of crabsticks should look like.

Inertia · 27/08/2023 22:04

I’m now wondering whether vets have access to some kind of universal microchip ( but like hotels having a master key) which could open the cat flap if poked around the bend

Because the stench of decomposing eggs in the chimney will overpower the smell of rotting crabstick in the bedroom and mouldy ham in the vent. Obviously.

Ooh, ooh, I think a fish slice and some lube might be the answer here!
