To break into new neighbours house *serious question, NOT trolling*

Name change as I don’t want neighbours to recognise me😭

I have a cat who has a bit of a reputation on our street for forcing his way into neighbours homes by breaking open their cat-flaps to steal their pets food. He’s been doing it for years, not much I can do about it besides keeping him in which he would hate. Anyway….

Here is the problem..

This afternoon I realised I hadn’t seen him for nearly 24 hours (very unusual for him). I went out into the street to look for him when I spotted the bloody buggar in the window of the house two doors down!!!
This house was recently bought by a couple who are living elsewhere while they are renovating it. I have briefly spoken to this couple once, and they mentioned they have cats, so I assumed they have already had a cat-flap installed which he has broken into.

I was really confused why he hadn’t come back out, so I peered through their front window and spotted the catflap which he must have entered through. It’s one of those “smart” catflap brands which only opens if the cat has the right microchip. So he’s managed to get in, but now he can’t get out as his microchip isn’t unlocking it. I can see his muddy scratch marks on their newly painted wall besides the catflap, so he’s obviously been trying to get back out 😩😩

So here’s the even bigger problem…

As i’ve said, the couple who own the house are living elsewhere while renovating it. So there is nobody here to let him back out. I usually see them visit the house every week or so but I don’t know when they will be here next and he has already been inside for around 24 hours.

I’ve already spoken to all of the neighbours and nobody has contact details for them. I did think I could contact the estate agents who their house was on the market with to try and get their contact details but as it is the bank holiday they won’t be open until Tuesday - which means he will have been trapped for 72 hours inside their house.

What should I do?! Do I try and break in, get my cat and then secure the property as best I can and explain what happened when they are next here? That sounds like a really bad start to a relationship with them but then my cats trapped inside, presumably without water?!

Once you've finished posting pork and seafood through through the windows and vents, I'd push a bunch of flowers through the letterbox then pour in a bottle of wine. Claim you were just dropping off a welcome hamper.

😂😂😂

Can you fit kitchen tongs through the gap in the window? If your cat can't even access the room with the crab sticks, I feel like you really should try to retrieve them 🤣

I'd tie a mouse to a piece of string and lower him down , Mission Impossible style , wait until he's eaten the crab sticks and winch him back up.

Poppyseed14 · 27/08/2023 22:06

OP won't you even try to get a locksmith. It would surely be more cost effective than a night of your cat doing his business all over their house not to mention scratching stuff and your smelly fish products you chucked in for good measure.

The problem is we've lost sight of what a normal portion of crabsticks should look like.

One crabstick should feed several cats for a month…

Would a locksmith open someone else’s door without permission?

Apparently so

I mean, the house is empty so I think it would be a disappointing break in for burglars... However, if they break in the cat can get out, so this sounds like a great plan tbh...

You never know, there may be some very clever burglars who can identify the house location from only a photo of the cat flap and coincidentally are really fancying a tasty seafood morsel and will be on their way round as we type

Howling, reading this post. Do hope you get the cat out OP but thos all day long.

Hahahhahahahahahahah! Crab sticks :-(

ihadamarveloustime · 27/08/2023 20:17

Can you not just use something to force/break the cat door flap?

I hope the police can help.

This. My cat can batter through a locked cat flap no problem. Just smash the flap, you can get replacement plastic flaps cheap as chips.

"Morning! Welcome to the neighbourhood. Here are your new keys because we changed the locks. The smell of tuna and cat faeces will go soon. Do you want to be on the local WhatsApp group?"

Palindrone · 27/08/2023 22:09

I'm sorry to hear the police weren't particularly helpful, OP.

A few years ago, my friend's cat got stuck in neighbouring house while the neighbours were abroad on holiday. The fire service didn't hesitate to come out and rescue the cat.

greedychopz · 27/08/2023 22:09

The owners are going to be feline pissed off when they get back. I don't think they'll want to be furiends with you

birdglasspen · 27/08/2023 22:10

Incase he can get out flap but isn’t trying put some really nice cat food just outside flap to intice him to try harder!

greedychopz · 27/08/2023 22:11

Despite the OP having a shocking catitude, with wanting to break into someone else's house, it's turned out to be a great tail for MN.

Dontstoptherain · 27/08/2023 22:11

You are being unreasonable.

Cats are domestic pets and have no place roaming the neighbourhood, their health and lives in danger, decimating wildlife and small pets, and causing a nuisance to your neighbours.

You have put your cat in danger, probably caused him a great deal of stress, AND damaged your neighbour’s property. This is gross.

DO BETTER.

For those saying poor indoor cats, do you actually know any? I know a lot and they are all very happy! None have been declawed so no idea why a pp brought that up. I’d rather have an indoor cat than have my cat run over tbh. My dogs are quite happy living inside a house and not roaming free too. Cats aren’t a pet I would ever own tho so don’t worry, no indoor cats here! It’s done here due to predators that would eat them within a day and because people don’t want strangers animals roaming around their land, dogs are held to that same standard. I also know indoor cats in the UK so it’s not like it doesn’t happen there.

Declawing - very common practice in the States, as I think I mentioned in my previous post. Dreadful practice. If the cat got out (even accidentally) they have no means to protect themselves.

And yes I do know 2 - my 2. Awful - they are bored, as I also said in my pp. No cat I have ever owned has been run over. We used to keep our cats in overnight and out if they chose during the day. That seemed the safest way. But I am member of various UK Siamese rescue and so many people keep their cats in. Not normal. Apparently it is the fear of theft.

Mumoftwodarlings · 27/08/2023 22:12

Is it worth doing a land reg search to see who owns the property (on the title) and try looking for them on Facebook to see if you can send them a msg.

https://www.gov.uk/search-property-information-land-registry

Search for land and property information

Find a property and get its title plan, title register and see who owns it

but would a plumber or handyman come out?

At a cost I would think yes.

I thought the poster meant 'come out of the house'. As the night wears on, more & more animals, small children & workmen will appear at the windows, looking out forlornly, until the house is bursting at the seams.

OMG! It's a cat, they roam. Are cats new to you?

I would argue it's the new neighbours fault for not locking their cat-flap as it's obviously not working properly.

I have some Dreamies (for the hedgehog) but no hula hoop fur goodness sake.
