To break into new neighbours house *serious question, NOT trolling*

Name change as I don’t want neighbours to recognise me😭

I have a cat who has a bit of a reputation on our street for forcing his way into neighbours homes by breaking open their cat-flaps to steal their pets food. He’s been doing it for years, not much I can do about it besides keeping him in which he would hate. Anyway….

Here is the problem..

This afternoon I realised I hadn’t seen him for nearly 24 hours (very unusual for him). I went out into the street to look for him when I spotted the bloody buggar in the window of the house two doors down!!!
This house was recently bought by a couple who are living elsewhere while they are renovating it. I have briefly spoken to this couple once, and they mentioned they have cats, so I assumed they have already had a cat-flap installed which he has broken into.

I was really confused why he hadn’t come back out, so I peered through their front window and spotted the catflap which he must have entered through. It’s one of those “smart” catflap brands which only opens if the cat has the right microchip. So he’s managed to get in, but now he can’t get out as his microchip isn’t unlocking it. I can see his muddy scratch marks on their newly painted wall besides the catflap, so he’s obviously been trying to get back out 😩😩

So here’s the even bigger problem…

As i’ve said, the couple who own the house are living elsewhere while renovating it. So there is nobody here to let him back out. I usually see them visit the house every week or so but I don’t know when they will be here next and he has already been inside for around 24 hours.

I’ve already spoken to all of the neighbours and nobody has contact details for them. I did think I could contact the estate agents who their house was on the market with to try and get their contact details but as it is the bank holiday they won’t be open until Tuesday - which means he will have been trapped for 72 hours inside their house.

What should I do?! Do I try and break in, get my cat and then secure the property as best I can and explain what happened when they are next here? That sounds like a really bad start to a relationship with them but then my cats trapped inside, presumably without water?!

If the door was opened you could leave food and water.

😂

Everyone shouting "call a locksmith"

Do you really think that any locksmith is going to change the locks on and let her in to a house that ISNT HERS???

JFC!

I locked myself out of my car last year.

I rang a mobile locksmith. No proof of ownership he broke into my car for me. Luckily the key was in the boot - but if it hadn’t been he would have made a new key.

I don’t think a locksmith asks for proof of ownership - burglars don’t use locksmiths!

Yes. Because I just asked one. JFC!

Plus a PP had to get one out and he didn't ask for proof of address. JFC x 3 😁

How many more times? Yes, I do think a locksmith is going to let me into a house that isn't mine. I locked myself out and I didn't have to prove ownership. They picked the lock and I paid by card. I could have been anyone. They had no proof it was my house and didn't even ask. Now do you see why everyone is saying call a locksmith? It really is that easy.

I read this as pot noodle. I was trying to work out how that would help. 😂

I was thinking pot noodle tub, like a small helmet, acting as some sort of battering ram on a stick to mimic a Norman headbanger.

Poppyseed14 · 27/08/2023 21:50

That's a point! If you can't get a locksmith OP, do you know any burglars maybe?

SoCentralRain · 27/08/2023 21:50

Op, is there a chimney? Maybe you could throw some hard boiled eggs down there.

Willmafrockfit · 27/08/2023 21:51

cat burglars particularly @Poppyseed14

birdglasspen · 27/08/2023 21:51

This may be the funniest post ever. You have posted crabsticks into a strangers house. 😂😂😂 your cat will be fine for a while yet I’d not be worrying about his food situation or particularly his water just yet. Do not post ham in to! I’m trying to think what’s strong and flexible enough to get round to the catflap. Draining rods might do it (clean ones!). Maybe a locksmith could help somehow (break in to a strangers house). Phone the police and report a bad suspicious smell (crabsticks) and be standing by to snaffle your cat when they break in 😂. My cat was missing for weeks once and he was probably trapped somewhere as when he returned he was skin and bones but he survived. I do really hope you get him out soon but try not to worry too much yet. If you must post food try dry cat food kibble much preferable to crabsticks 😂😂

HateTheView · 27/08/2023 21:51

Have the estate agents got a Facebook page? You could try posting on there (if it accepts posts) the admin might see it, or sometimes employees also follow their employers page, so they may see it and alert someone that could help.

milleniaaal · 27/08/2023 21:52

do not break in. ask other neighbours if they have the new neighbours number? call RSPCA for advice? don't break in. maybe leave your cat food and water in the meantime? not sure if you can still get your hand through the flap?

Well as I’m not a crazy car person, I would have an indoor car only. Which is the norm where I currently live and we don’t have a stray cat issue, cats crapping all over peoples homes, being run over, destroying the local bird populations or cats being abandoned on the streets when people move house. No other domesticated animals roam loose. I found the culture shift a little odd when I first moved out of the UK but I much prefer it now.
This situation is batshit and OP putting CRAB into someone’s home is horrible. People are seriously encouraging her to break into someone’s home! I hope she gets her cat back, but I also hope it doesn’t get out and do this again. Poor poor neighbors.

I'd say Poor, poor cats being essentially imprisoned indoors forever by you. How cruel - cats aren't meant to live that way.

dawngreen · 27/08/2023 21:52

Yes and they can secure the house after. If you break in the cat flap and its left unsecured and a chancer reads your info and breaks in. Would the home owner be happy?

I'm just agog that a locksmith will come and let you into someone else's house when you are on holiday or away with no questions asked!!! That seems mad to me!

I've seen posts on here about relationship break ups and people always say a locksmith won't change the locks in that situation?

It would have to be a very small chancer to break in through a cat flap to be fair. No bigger than a cat I'd say.

I agree with you on the locksmith idea though.

Sundaybaby · 27/08/2023 21:54

Well this catastrophe is giving us paws for thought.

You should read the news more then

butteringthestairs · 27/08/2023 21:55

Ham or Dreamies? Ham, or Dreamies? Hmm, tricky. Dreamies - small, dry, don't go off, don't make a mess, easily pokeable through a gap. Ham - none of those. More fun though.

Nice bit of tuna to go with them and he's got himself the start of a nice tuna nicoise there 😀

But you're not asking for the lock to be changed. All they do is pick the lock and let you in. I've done it myself last year. Cost me £79 but I wasn't asked for any proof I lived there. Obviously that's worrying but in this case would be the easiest solution.
