Can't we just have cameras in school and hospitals?

Thinking about the Letby case more, wouldn't it make sense on certain wards to have 24h security cameras rolling? If people are doing their job properly there will be no concern. But if there was some sort of major issue like what happened in the letby hospital it would be used with notes to put together a picture of what happened. Children's wards and neonatal wards should have cameras on the beds/cots all the time.

I'm not looking to blame people for minor mishaps but more to get to the bottom of potentially "life ruining" events.

I think the same for schools. It would protect teachers mainly. There would be no word of a student against a teachers. Schools have become increasingly violent.

We have cameras all over my school. They were just upgraded recently. The picture on the monitor is crystal clear. Recently footage was used to defend a colleague against an accusation from a student.
Only place we don't have cameras is in the bathrooms and changing rooms.

Caro678 · 27/08/2023 10:52

You couldn’t have cameras pointed at beds for privacy reasons. In public areas, at nursing stations and in the rooms where they make up meds etc, would be a good idea. Not sure if this is common or not.

Many schools do have some CCTV in corridors or playground areas etc.

Problesolving · 27/08/2023 10:53

Patients aren’t going to want unnecessary people watching their personal care needs meet. Lots of people aren’t going to consent to their children being constantly recorded in school either.

Where is the money coming from for the equipment, storage of data and someone to monitor the video.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/08/2023 10:53

It would protect teachers mainly.

In some ways maybe. It would also allow unsupportive SLT to constantly observe and scrutinise teachers in a potentially bullying way.

Twizbe · 27/08/2023 10:55

Our school has CCTV As far as I know it’s not in the classrooms though.

For hospitals, it would be an infringement on privacy to have the cameras on beds.

RoomOfRequirement · 27/08/2023 10:56

Do you want a camera recording your bed bath after major surgery? Or your internal exam? Painful procedures?

What an awful idea.

ValentinaTheVampire · 27/08/2023 10:57

There is cctv all over the secondary school I work in. There are a few blindspots but not many. It is also to protect students from each other. Assaults etc are all recorded so they can't deny anything or claim it was the other one started it yada yada.

ValentinaTheVampire · 27/08/2023 10:59

Also in hotels and restaurants. I've worked in a few where they will look at cctv to check on employees 😬. It isn't great, but it's understandable

melon234 · 27/08/2023 11:00

I think it could potentially only used in children's wards and neonatal units.

I'm an adult and can request a chaperone. Or say no to something.

The footage would not be observed or monitored at all. Only if there was a need to access it. It could be accessed only by certain individuals.

If I was a patient and I think something dodgy happened, I would 100% give permission. Would not care at all if my bare skin was on show or I looked vulnerable.

CCTV at my school too. Useful recently to identify vandals, fly tippers, a parent who stole a teacher's purse. Also protected a teacher who was accused, by a parent, of shouting at a vulnerable child. CCTV showed them sitting on a bench, calm chat, lots of laughing and smiles. Awful that this is now needed really.

But different on a ward imo. Patients deserve privacy and dignity.

melon234 · 27/08/2023 11:03

After what happened, I would give consent on a children's/neonatal ward for sure.

Being a bit embarrassed about a bed bath does not trump children's safety.

I do think it's different for adults as usually we are aware of care given, can say no and also ask for a chaperone.

Twizbe · 27/08/2023 11:04

@melon234 well that’s great for you, but I don’t want a camera recording my personal care. I’d also not want a camera recording my children while receiving personal care either. It doesn’t matter about their age, they still deserve privacy and respect.

Rudolphthefrog · 27/08/2023 11:06

Children’s wards should have cameras on the beds?!!!

You want to record children during distressing procedures, personal care, possible bedpans/nappy changes, getting dressed/undressed, parents parenting, being given bad news etc?

Would you be happy to have cameras on your child’s bedroom at home? Would you as an adult want to be filmed in your hospital bed?

Insane idea. School corridors, dining rooms etc is a completely different thing.

melon234 · 27/08/2023 11:06

It would not be able to be accessed to prove someone took a 10 minute longer break or stood around chatting etc.

Only in very strict circumstances could it be accessed. Such as legal cases like this or if a supposed crime was committed.

Imagine if there was a camera in the letby case.

Letby would consent to viewing footage as she had said she's innocent all along. If she said no, it would look terrible.

The parents would consent as they want concrete answers.

My hospital has CCTV in the corridors. Can't possibly have it on wards due to patient privacy and dignity.

ZolaBudd · 27/08/2023 11:08

We do have cameras in schools lots and lots of them.
absolutely amazing at showing parents how kids lie

Toddlerteaplease · 27/08/2023 11:08

@melon234 children and neonates have the same right to privacy. Most of them have parents there anyway.

35965a · 27/08/2023 11:08

Hell no

BiggerBoat1 · 27/08/2023 11:10

Schools do have CCTV. Parents are often surprised by the behaviour of their little "angels". It also protects teachers from false accusations. It is generally in public areas - corridors, canteen, entrance to toilets etc.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/08/2023 11:10

So the 12 year old having to have a very personal procedure last night. Is absolutely fine to be filmed? Would you really allow that for your daughter?

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 27/08/2023 11:10

and if it’s hacked?
who is paying for it to be maintained and stored?

i would sooner hospitals spent the money on more staff and better management

Twizbe · 27/08/2023 11:10

@melon234 how can you be sure it wouldn’t be misused? You can’t.

everyone has a right to privacy and dignity.

Motherofacertainage · 27/08/2023 11:11

1984! We are already supervised and recorded more so than any generation who have ever lived. All well and good if those in charge are moral and honorable (ahem) but what if they aren't? Or subsequent governments aren't? We cannot compromise everyone's remaining freedoms because of the teeny minority of manics and psychopaths. But maybe public services should go back to being run for the benefit of society rather than being turned into for profit organisations where the shareholders interests are protected rather than professionals valued and believed.

melon234 · 27/08/2023 11:11

To those saying they want complete privacy, what about of it was a service that was optional? Id opt to switch it on if I was giving birth now because I've lost trust completely I'm afraid.
