Why on earth can people not just say, husband, daughter, son etc. I find all these acronyms so bizarre. Is there some sort of genuine reason people on mumsnet refer to their husband (who they’re usually calling an a*sehole in the same breath) DEAR husband, in what world would we actually say this? Anyways not that deep just a genuine question

I've been on here 12 years. Do you know how many times this thread has been posted? Not that I'm keeping count, but a lot.

It will never change. Don't waste your energy on it

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/08/2023 21:07

Well, you've obviously not considered that dh is somewhat shorter than dear husband.

HTH.

Annaishere · 26/08/2023 21:53

I didn’t know what a DH was at first lol like what is this, everyone’s DH

WeWereInParis · 26/08/2023 22:07

This isn't a MN-specific thing.

I think the "D" is added because otherwise you're just saying "H" or "S" and then it sounds more like initials, like when some threads say "I have a friend, lets call her A". And obviously it's shorter than typing out husband or daughter.

DDog and DCat are just silly though. Just write dog and cat.

SgtPercyTwentyman · 26/08/2023 22:09

Didn't there use to be a list of acronyms/abbreviations somewhere on MN?

Clefable · 26/08/2023 22:11

Because it's easier when scanning a long post to pick out the capitals and follow along with the main players rather than lower case 'my husband' or 'my son' all the time.

YoSof · 26/08/2023 22:11

Are you a new user of the internet?

VerticalSausages · 26/08/2023 22:14

There’s a (crap) search function if you want to see this question debated 1000 times before.

Tinkerbyebye · 26/08/2023 22:23

it’s like it is on here, been like it for years

you type it out if you want, don't want to see the initials then this is not the place for you

HTH

Do you mean 'etcetera'?

🤣🤣🤣🤣 nice

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 26/08/2023 22:34

It's the rules of the MN club. I like it. Don't like it? Go to Reddit. Or ignore the rules. Whatevs.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 26/08/2023 22:39

I especially love the MN quirk that we have to guess if SIL is son-in-law or sister-in-law, or if DS12 is 12 years old or the 12th kid. Makes the story so much more interesting. Don't ever change, MN.

determinedtomakethiswork · 26/08/2023 23:06

What's more as when you have daunt, duncle, ddog and dcat. I just don't understand some people.

notsurewhat2do99 · 26/08/2023 23:18

what does HTH mean please?

WunWun · 26/08/2023 23:20

Hope that helps or happy to help

UsingChangeofName · 26/08/2023 23:32

Why have you written etc rather than the full word ?
'they're' rather than 'they are' (which only saves you one tap of the keyboard).

What do you call it when your car needs to go for an MOT ?
Do you ever write Dr or Mr or do you always write Doctor and Mister ?
What about the NHS? - Is that okay or do you feel you need to write that out in full ?

What an odd thing to start a thread about Confused
Bit strange that you can't understand that hitting dd is a LOT quicker than writing 'my daughter'.

what does HTH mean please?

Hope that helps. It’s passive aggressive like a few answers to your OP.

JST88 · 26/08/2023 23:34

I’ve only just came on after seeing their insta posts lol I’ll never get it but yeah won’t waste energy on it

ThatsALampost · 26/08/2023 23:36

These short forms have been used even in old forums 15 years ago, it’s not a new thing (but I’ve never understood the “dear” choice)

JST88 · 26/08/2023 23:36

Lol I haven’t seen the ddog/dcat references yet

OP posts:
JST88 · 26/08/2023 23:39

You’ve clearly not grasped the point which isn’t that I’m against acronyms but I find the ‘dear’ part odd, sheeesh.

OP posts:
JST88 · 26/08/2023 23:45

Yikes you’ve missed the point! It’s the ‘dear’ part I was looking at. I’ve never heard anyone refer to their husband, for example, as Dear Husband.. anyways what a strange thread for you to comment on 🤔
