Why on earth can people not just say, husband, daughter, son etc. I find all these acronyms so bizarre. Is there some sort of genuine reason people on mumsnet refer to their husband (who they’re usually calling an a*sehole in the same breath) DEAR husband, in what world would we actually say this? Anyways not that deep just a genuine question

Yeah same, that was my point. It’s really not that deep just a general observation and bemusement at the choice of words

Well you’ve not read the post very well have you? My point wasn’t the use of an acronym/related to time saved it was regarding the use of the word ‘dear’.

It means dear or damn, depending on mood.

The D helps it to stand out in text

My s was saying
My ds was saying

It looks less like a typo.

JST88 · 27/08/2023 00:07

Haha i didn’t know this

Yes! And then some people tie themselves up in knots and start referring to everyone and everything as “dear” dcousin, dneighbour, dteacher, dknife, dfork, dspoon and so on and so on…

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 27/08/2023 00:58

DH on most boards = dear/darling husband
DH on Relationships or Divorce boards = dick head

Same person, same initials, different titles.

foulksmills · 27/08/2023 01:03

Nvm, I'm too late.

Hawkins009 · 27/08/2023 01:03

Don't forget CF too

inonan · 27/08/2023 01:39

Ddog, Dcat or Dhorse also!

There's also one something like STBX and I've no idea what that means.

I agree. Sounds so dumb.

Do you mean 'etcetera'?

Don't you mean et cetera?😉

WhateverMate · 27/08/2023 10:00

ApiratesaysYarrr · 27/08/2023 09:57

Don't you mean et cetera?😉

No, why do you ask?

The Latin term et cetera ("and the rest") is usually written as two words in Canadian English. However, the one-word spelling etcetera is also correct.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/08/2023 10:06

Do you wonder why so many people asking a question or for help are called TIA ? (Thanks In Advance ) Grin

And don't forget the Biscuit - it's not offering you a snack though

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/08/2023 10:09

When I used to post about my rodenty ones I'd have to write Guinea-Pigs in full in the title , even though it was in Small Pets
Otherwise Can I keep my GPs in the shed takes on a whole new meaning if someone reads it as GrandParents or GP /Dr

Or "piggies" , it was "Oh I thought you meant actual pigs "

Berlinlover · 27/08/2023 10:12

I agree with you, dear this, dear that - it’s utter nonsense.

Toottooot · 27/08/2023 10:14

Who said it's 'correct' ? Because from a Latin rule and use point of view it is not correct.

I’ve only just came on after seeing their insta posts lol I’ll never get it

What is there to 'get'? They are abbreviations. It's pretty normal for clubs, groups and communities (online or in real life), to have their own acronyms or jargon, often used a bit ironically or humorously. Having shared language makes people feel they belong to a group.

However these particular abbreviations started off, they now just mean 'daughter', husband etc. You surely don't think everyone is really meaning 'dear' every time they use them? Grin

Soubriquet · 27/08/2023 10:20

It’s easier and quicker to type. That’s it.

Theres nothing stopping you writing down the full word if you choose to
