Why on earth can people not just say, husband, daughter, son etc. I find all these acronyms so bizarre. Is there some sort of genuine reason people on mumsnet refer to their husband (who they’re usually calling an a*sehole in the same breath) DEAR husband, in what world would we actually say this? Anyways not that deep just a genuine question

Do you know ODFOD?

ImABox · 27/08/2023 11:54

Because it's easier when scanning a long post to pick out the capitals and follow along with the main players rather than lower case 'my husband' or 'my son' all the time.

This! I find it really helps and I can follow much more easily.
I really like it.

BanLeavesandApples · 27/08/2023 11:58

I don’t like it when people put hahaha in their posts, can you stop doing that please OP?

>Mumsnet is like code work

It's not that difficult to get. At all.

Malarandras · 27/08/2023 12:53

I think it’s ridiculous and I never do it. But other people do and it doesn’t bother me. Each to their own. I do not know what ‘LTB’ means though and I have never seen it explained anywhere.

You’ve clearly not grasped the point which isn’t that I’m against acronyms but I find the ‘dear’ part odd, sheeesh.

What is your solution? h, s, d just doesn't work. Long hand is a pain in the arse.

dh, ds, dd works, they are easily identifiable and easy to use, if it ain't broken it doesn't need fixed.

It is no different from the shorthand used on most social medial now - you learn as you go along (or ask the nearest teen!). If you don't want to use it then write out long hand, ignore the shorthand posts or find another site. I really don't even think about the "d" part now. - they are just shorthand for the relationship to the person not a definition of the relationship.

Just don't use twee hubby or kiddies as they are a thousand times worse!

Even my boss send me a message on teams on the other week with FOMO which I had never heard before and had to google!

MNetcurtains · 27/08/2023 13:41

Off topic-ish, but what are "toasties"?

I think they are a rolling thread of people who like shopping at Toast.

Ah, okay, thanks. I think it was the lack of capitalisation that threw me.

I agree, the acronyms are quite silly for grown up people.

What is easier to type?
Husband
h

?

And as explained above, single letters free floating look like typos. When paired with another letter the eye recognises them as words.

Grown-up people use acronyms all the time. But yes, heaven forfend that a chat forum should be contaminated by any sillinessShock. We should all be serious at all times and not use any lighthearted abbreviations or in-phrases.

whatsappdoc · 27/08/2023 19:23

Oh that’s a shame, you don’t see it very often now do you?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/08/2023 10:18

I’ve only just came on after seeing their insta posts lol I’ll never get it

What is there to 'get'? They are abbreviations. It's pretty normal for clubs, groups and communities (online or in real life), to have their own acronyms or jargon, often used a bit ironically or humorously. Having shared language makes people feel they belong to a group.

However these particular abbreviations started off, they now just mean 'daughter', husband etc. You surely don't think everyone is really meaning 'dear' every time they use them? Grin

Very well put

JST88 · 28/08/2023 18:13

I really don’t care enough nor active enough to care to provide/ponder a solution tbh. I just posted because I was wondering if there was a story/good reason the term, ‘dear husband’ etc started.
